saw Wilco the other night, and near the end, Tweedy says, "This one's for Alex Chilton", and they did a spot-on, you'd almost think it was the Big Star album, version of In The Street, with John Stirrat doing the vocals.
It was amazing.

While maybe not yet dead, all the news this week on Poison singer Bret Michaels being in critical condition with a brain hemmorage and some are wondering "WHY???" --- I submit the following evidence from last year:

oh man! easily!
as he's going down, his left leg is going up as his upper body's being carried down. and with this as a total surprise, you KNOW his head did a serious 'THUMP' on the ground...ouch.
i didn't much care for poison or for his ego-massaging reality show (never watched an entire episode but the concept alone is clearly an embarassment), but i still watch those 'apprentice' shows and on the latest incarnation michaels actually comes of as an ok (if incredibly lucky) guy....i very much hope he pulls through.

Ronnie James Dio, legendary vocalist for Black Sabbath, Heaven & Hell and Dio, has died after a battle with stomach cancer, according to his wife, Wendy Dio. He was 67 years old. The heavy metal singer died early this morning. He was being treated at M.D. Anderson in Houston. A rumor circulated Saturday night on Twitter about Dio's death. His wife quickly shot that down: "He is not doing well, but he is not dead." His wife released a statement to blabbermouth.net today: "Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45 a.m. [on Sunday] 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private goodbyes before he peacefully passed away. "Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. "We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. "Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. "Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever." Gutted.

yeah,,,shocked me as I didn't know he was ailing....
In the meantime, why him? Like WTF? Ronnie James Dio.... There's plenty of other rockers with three names that coulda gone. Jon Bon Jovi....there ya go! Doesn't know if he's rock or country or whatthefuck anymore. Poseur anyhow --- he coulda been aced and not missed! Terence Trent D'Arby --- who's gonna shed a tear??? Wanna hear "Wishing Well" another time? huh??? Joe Lynn Turner --- was fuckin' later IN Rainbow after Dio! jezuzK-rist IS there any comparison??? Coulda dug that grave 30 years ago and who woulda missed 'em once the dirt was tossed on top? NO ONE! ....Crosby, Stills, & Nash --- yeah, it's 3 guys but that name trilogy could go, they've done enuff! John Paul Jones --- (okay,,,,I'll give a slide here 'cause the guy is classic and still proving relevent with the Vultures thingy...same with Billy Joe Armstrong...)
Anyhow, it's a bitch --- got to admit the fellow had some ripe Rock-N-Roll pipes, gave us the evil-eye salute, and even showed there was GREAT hope of a post-Ozzy Sabbath. Maybe time to toss a couple down and pull out my DIO Anthology,,,,"Long Live Rock & Roll" indeed.

I knew Dio was battling cancer- one of my colleagues is a massive fan and has got many contacts in the metalworld and via Craig Goldie he heard that Ronnie's cancer was subsiding, hence the Heaven & Hell-tour still being booked...but things went sour very quickly. As usual, cancer is a bad loser and when people think they have beaten the bastard, back it comes with a vengeance...ask my mother, she's going through the same thing now. What astonished me was the speed with which Dio was levelled by the disease.
I'll be honest, my fandom is mostly courtesy of my sister who was a fan and dragged me to see him play live back in 1987 (I think). I liked his Sabbath-work the best. His solo-material didn't really impact me until later, that was due to my little sister who had Holy Diver blaring consistently out of her little record player at full volume and it drove me insane...but later I had a dig and liked it a lot.
It's hard to believe that Mr. Dio once stared out like this:
And of course this:

This is just a new song off HANK III's new album, "REBEL WITHIN". Don't mean to scare U, Hank's still alive and well, and he'll be rollin' thru my town at the end of the month. Check out this fucking classic song and lend an ear to that slide guitar, reminescent of Lynyrd Skynyrd at their best.
