I like the Richard Cheese versions that are popping up.... yeah between him, Paul Anka, and Hayseed Dixie....but either Cheese's "Rape Me" or his NIN cover to hear him swoon "I want to fuck you like an animal" just about takes the cake. I'll be looking forward to those discs (GREAT titles to 'em!) and they look like a great mix of familiar and not familiar tracks, plus a good toss of newer and older artists. Of course I'll probably skip right to the end of Disc #1 to unveil the Steve Wilson mystery tunes....

1. David Bowie- Cactus- I like this version, it's one of those songs that noone could hope to match the manic genius of the orginal and to Bowie's credit he doesn't try. Though on the same token I think it's a little slicker then it ought to be, certainly a highlight on a merely okay album (Heathen).
2. John Cale- Heartbreak Hotel- I'm a little disappointed in this, it follows the same paint by numbers every goth cover does.
3. Dave Navarro- Venus In Furs- I'm not that big a fan of the orginal, this is a good cover of it though I suppose. Seeing how unimpressive Navarro is as a solo artist it could've been much worse.
4. Thw White Stripes- One More Cup Of Coffee- I really like how they rearanged this, it's almost completely different. I think I'd like it better though If Jack actually sang instead of that wierd Halloween wicked witch voice he does sometimes.
5. Yo La Tengo- Blitzkreig Bop- I like this...it's nice.
6. Uncle Tupelo- I Wanna Be Your Dog- I have a surprisingly large collection of alt country bands doing Iggy Pop songs. This one in particular seems to be a favorite, check out Alejandro Escovado's version as well. This and The Bad Liver's cover of Lust For Life are two of the best.
7. Golden Smog- Glad And Sorry- To be completely honest, this cover is probably what started me listening to the Faces. I owe this a large debt in helping me discover one of the great underrated bands.
8. Smoking Popes- Pure Imagination- A very natural fit for these guys.
9. Husker Du- Sunshine Superman- I've always loved their version of Love Is All Around, but I don't really think this distiguishes itself very well, though it's by no means a bad version.
10. The Go!- Hey Ya!- You should hunt down Razorlight's cover of this, both are pretty good.
11. X- Soul Kitchen- I'm torn between my hatred of the Doors and my love for X. Since this sounds more like X, I'll give into the latter.
12. Red Hot Chili Peppers- Subturranean...- Some bands who take a cover and make their own are to be commended...this isn't one of those.
13. The Clash- Pressure Drop- Classic.
14. Joe Strummer- Redemption Song- Have you heard the duet version with Johnny Cash? Wow. I think a duet with Johnny Cash is probably the only way you could do this better.
15. Wilco- Comment- I'd like to thank Wilco for bringing this song to my attention. Great song.

2. John Cale- Heartbreak Hotel- I'm a little disappointed in this, it follows the same paint by numbers every goth cover does. In fairness to Cale, this version was released on 1975, so I think he probably created that template. The paint-by-numbers goth cover may have been based on this. 5. Yo La Tengo- Blitzkreig Bop- I like this...it's nice. That's about the only thing to be said about that one, right? I just thought it would be interesting to throw it in there to break things up a bit. Kinda goofy, but fun. 7. Golden Smog- Glad And Sorry- To be completely honest, this cover is probably what started me listening to the Faces. I owe this a large debt in helping me discover one of the great underrated bands. Me too. The Go!- Hey Ya!- You should hunt down Razorlight's cover of this, both are pretty good. Yeah, the Go version is actually pretty straightforward. It's more interesting just because who it is doing it rather than the actual song itself (the Go are a garage-y type band. Jack White used to be their lead guitarist). I'll keep an eye out for the Razorlight version. 11. X- Soul Kitchen- I'm torn between my hatred of the Doors and my love for X. Since this sounds more like X, I'll give into the latter. I feel the same way. X clearly do this song 10 times better than the original. 12. Red Hot Chili Peppers- Subturranean...- Some bands who take a cover and make their own are to be commended...this isn't one of those. Couldn't disagree more. RHCP is, IMO, one of the best cover bands alive, and this is one of my favorites. 15. Wilco- Comment- I'd like to thank Wilco for bringing this song to my attention. Great song. Absolutely. Great lyrics, great arrangement. And I think it's pretty amazing that Tweedy is able to pull off the vocals on this one, because it really doesn't seem like his type of song. Must be great to see a Wilco show with them closing with this one. I once saw them close a show with Bill Fay's "Be Not So Fearful" and that was pretty touching too. Thanks for your comments, Mantis.

All in all, though, the Chili Peppers is the only one I don't like...well done. Thanks.

Oh, and yeah, I have heard the Strummer/Cash duet. I actually like the Mescaleros version better, to be honest with you. It's cool hearing Strummer's and Cash's voices side by side, but other than that...well, the arrangement is pretty much the same as every other version of the song I've ever heard (including the Mescaleros version), and to be honest, I don't think their voices mesh together that well. It's cool to hear just because it's Joe Strummer and Johnny Cash, but I don't think it really works all that well.
Too bad Johnny never got to record "Long Shadow" before he passed. That could have been amazing.

Rec'd a 4-pac from Maarts; 2 cover discs & 2 Porcupine Tree related discs. I'll try to give a bit of a rundown here (the one's marked with a colored font show titles that I wasn't instantly familiar with by the original artist):
#1: Like A Version
"Black Sheep Boy" - PAUL WELLER / Tim Hardin Easy moving quick little tune that's easy on ear; reminds me of mid-70's folk rock (not necessarily a bad thing at all). Wish he would have put more stuff like this on "Studio 150"...
"Nobody 'Cept You" - 16 HORSEPOWER / Bob Dylan In your liner notes you called attention to comparison to The Alarm which I could see in the vocal manner. Nice listen that wants me to seek out the comparison with the original.
"Long As I Can See The Light" - TED HAWKINS / Creedence Clearwater Revival Has a close gospel tinge to it...again nice. This name sounds familiar to me...what's he known for? Good production that seems to suit him (and fits well with the opening trio here).
"Dreamworld" - SOMETHING FOR KATE / Midnight Oil Okay but in no way overshadows the original. Just lacks the "oomf!" that Garrett & Co. brings to it.
"Wild Horses" - THE SUNDAYS / Rolling Stones Goes so much more for the gentle flow than the country-ish swagger the Stones put towards it and that's where it succeeds. Always liked this version as a late nighter tune.
"Tomorrow Never Knows" - THE CHAMELEONS /The Beatles Time, Place, & Sense come together here and work decently enough in its updating....I'm guessing 80's. But you know, it makes me want to give The Beatles credit for what they created in their own period and know that it wasn't outdone here.
"Blind Willie McTell" - TEX DON & CHARLIE / Bob Dylan Woooo....great execution on this one! Love the slide on this and just how accentive the instruments are to the plaintive vocal. yeah, this one's a keeper!
"Sweet Thing" - THE WATERBOYS / Van Morrison uh-huh...y'er preachin' to the choir here!! A great cut off the fantastic "Fisherman's Blues" that just makes me want to reach for that disc. And they SO make it their own too!
"Don't Let Me Down" - DILLARD & CLARK / The Beatles The country bent didnt' really hit me on this...okay but not spectacular if memorable.
"Reason To Believe" - CASSELL WEBB / Bruce Springsteen Agree that the female vocal is nice, clean, and haunting in its own Springsteen-esque way but the keyboard chords put a more distant air to it that doesn't do it for me.
"Jumping Jack Flash" - JOHNNY WINTER / Rolling Stones Want your 'simple yeah'? Ok: YEAH! Is this with Rick Derringer?
"When The Levee Breaks" - KRISTIN HERSH / Led Zeppelin ah! This probably takes it back closer to the real Memphis Minnie version...decent as all hell get out. A song doesn't have to be much to be effective and this shows that!
"Life's What You Make It" - THE DIVINE COMEDY / Talk Talk This kinda just laid there...maybe in context it'd be better. Plus I'm not familiar with the original to judge it on either.
"Only Human" - THE HOPE BLISTER / Heidy Berry Lovely song and as you noted a die-for vocal. I could put this on endless repeat late at night and just sip vodka gimlets until my eyes sealed shut... aw, this is great....kill me but it gives me the slight feel of Sinead O'Conner singing "Sacrifice" to me....well, right now it does anyhow....
"Cover Vers. 1 - 3" - STEVE WILSON man, I don't think I've heard any of these three tunes though the first one's lyric strikes me a bit familiar...need to follow up and give me the titles/org. artists!! As a rundown, they're ALL spectactular; moody, sad, and infused with that Wilson effect of depth working with space & precision. The first cut is my favorite, the second my least, and the third has an 80's electronica thing going on that quite works with its minimalism. Heh, I just luv this dude...he could lay a turd on a slice of white bread and I'd eat it up!
