HÉ!
At least Scottsy had a new marriage and cross-planet move to get in the way of sending you a his mix. I still haven't gotten one from Luke, just because he's friggin' lazy. Or busy. But not as busy as Scottsy.

LOL! Sorry Phil....I was just being grateful of the disc's you sent me on the first trade that I wanted to return the favor 'out-of-turn' I guess....that, and I don't have a Life and sit here and just burn, baby, burn most of the weekend.
As for wanting more CDs, that's kind of ironic as a couple days after sending out your package I discovered a 5th disc that I'd made for you left in one of my CD players! I apparently had previewed it and then forgot the blame thing....so you'll have to wait on that for another shipment.....
I'm re-listening to it right now....and ummmmm! Starts out with the brief instrumental theme to the movie "Chinatown" and nicely segues into a version of "I Put A Spell On You" by Jools Holland & guests. It also has some Alphonse Mouzon (w/Tommy Bolin), some more Babe Ruth (doing Curtis Mayfield instead of Zappa this time)...oh, and an acoustic of solo Richard Thompson doing "When The Spell Is Broken"....hey, actually this thing as it's playing is sounding good enough now to keep!!

Phil - your Cds missed the "Scottsy and Mellie are broke as shit" boat, and will be sent soon - my career as a burger flipper might start up in a week or so.... allowing money for sending CDs in the mail.... hahahahahahahahaha!!! Really I have them here, but like 45 cents in my wallet and not much more in our joint account - moving countries is expensive man!
I'll find a good reliable carrier pigeon if you like! hahahahahahaha!!
By the way, HUGE thanks for the discs you sent me! Bloody fantastic entertainment! When i have given them a good decent thorough listening session (I'm through the first 2 discs you sent.... wanna listen with more detail though.... hehehehehehe) I'll post a big long self indulgent post of my impressions!
But hey LOVED the little postcards you sent with the discs... looks like a darn pretty city you live in, and i did take note of your directions to where you live on one of them... hehehehehe!

Hey Mantis, I've been promising the write up for a while and I have been making notes the first time I listened to it. Thanks for not supplying a track listing, so now it's a bit of a quiz too. Let's see:
1. This is Bankrobber by the Clash, dunno who the singer is. Liked it for the slightly hysterical vocal which is so bon ton these days with many singer/songwriters. Sounds a bit like Kevin Rowland.
2. Ha! Soundgarden! Badmotorfinger is so fucking on fire and even this is not the strongest track on there, it's a cool languid rockversion of the Devo-classic.
3. Got this too! Breeders! What the fuck is it again? It's on the Live In Stockholm-thingy ...aaargh! Had to grab my copy and look it up- GBV! Shocker In Gloomtown! Nice fuzzy sound! Pollard should work with them one day!
4. Tori's classic Cornflake Girl in a bit standard alt-rock-by-numbers workout. There's a pretty good string quartet version of this. Like the background vocals on this though.
5. Bit of a bathroom-recording of How Will I Know, the Witchney-song...the original sucks major vinegar balls. Yeah, bit of dunno, never cared for the original enough to rate this. I'd buy this singer a drink though for the alternation of falsetto/lower voice.
6. TYRONE! Erykah Badu's live version is the shit! Cool, sassy and funny! This vocal reminds me a bit of Joan Armatrading or the dude from My Morning Jacket. Who is this? It's nice!
7. Ah yeah, the Handle With Care-cover by Jenny Lewis! I've been a bit savage on it when the album came out as I still think the beauty on Rabbit Fur Coat is more centred on arranging to making it sound good than making it memorable for killer melodies. Probably that had also to do with the musical intelligentsia diving on this and calling it a masterpiece. I should revisit this and see if my mind has changed. This is unobtrusive from the Petty-esque guitar to the awkward male backing vocals.
8. Steely Dan! This is quirky and a bit Arcade Fire/National-istic in it's offbeatness without the dramatics. Yeah, like this approach.
9. I'm on fire- this is Jackson Browne's song! Hmm, it's sort of one of those college-ish bands that i can take or leave...this isn't bad but nothing to set me on fire.
10. I don't want to grow up...if any anthem did give a bit of innocence to the punk generation it's this Ramones-song and the lyric is a bit more than the general glue sniffin', teenage lobotomizing, let's-have-some-fun-nature of their output. This version makes it almost sickening sweet in a little girlie-kinda way but it's actually pretty well done.
11. Caroline Says II for me is a staplemark in Lou Reed's Berlin. The dramatic lyric with the keyboard washes gives it such a heart tugging impact which continues later on in The Kids and The Bed and that trio of songs is so incredible dear to me. To hear this song in such an unbearable lighthearted Dylanesque (and not only because of the harmonica) setting undermines for mine the purpose. With some tracks I have difficulty to let go of the original, this is one of them so this cover doesn't do it for me. Sorry, I'm a tough taskmaster!
12. This is the Billie Holiday-classic I'll be Seeing You, innit? Thought it had this French chique-kind of approach with that little fuzzy guitar and the accent of the lady...you could almost hear them grab the Gauloises and stick one up sixties-style! Even spoken word-lyrics on them! It's quite a funny pisstake on French culture almost and that's the best part of it! Tres chique, tres chique!
13. I finally had some copies in of the Seu Jorge-album The Life Aquatic Sessions in which he does the Bowie-covers last week and had a listen to it and quite like his lounge-y version of it. The laid-back style suits me better than some of the more modern singer/songwriter-takes on covers with the strumming guitar- like the fingerpicking better! His versions of Queen Bitch and Suffragette City are excellent too- definitely would recommend this to Bow!
14. LOL! Summertime Blues always is a good cover choice and this nice doubled up guitar-rocker does a good job here. It's not Blue Cheer is it? Heard their version, sounds a bit in their league but the vocal doesn't match...ah well, agreeable. And with echo!
15. YES! This is Pearl Jam isn't it? From one of these live-CDs that they pooed out in huge quantities a few years back? Also on the underrated LOST DOGS!
16. Earth Angel- a quite aenemic version. Why does doo-wop translate so badly into this modern setting? This needs soul, not a treated vocal over a substandard backing! Bring back The Penguins!
17. Split Enz made some great songs and Six Months In A Leaky Boat is a classic. This is good- I should know this though and I'll probably kick myself when I find out. The solo's nice too. Dude with one rock guitar who manages in the vocal even to sound a bit like Tim (not Neil) Finn...it's not him though I'm sure! Yeah, this is good!
18. Bring back the fuzz! Electro-led guitar fuzz- I don't recognise the song though, not a clue. The Lips? Dunno, doesn't do much for me.
19. It is Shapes Of Things..almost sounds like the Allmans. This is quite how like a rhythm and blues-band to sound, from the barroom-piano to the two different guitars leading. This is good stuff....
20. 'Shut up this is serious'! Thank god he laughs himself throughout this take on Avril's teen-angsty anthem. Sudden ending, what happened? Decided to throw off his acoustic guitar and say a big 'fuck you' to the audience? No idea, this could be any dude having a bit of a fun-wank with his audience after he has played live for them for two hours with his band...
21. Dude, more Jackson Browne- bring it on. So is Casiopop back these days? Sounds like a Bright Eyes-finger exercise. I heard the Fountains Of wayne-version some time ago which was pretty good- this is is..yeah, like the additions to the lone keyboard so I'm sort of warming to it, if you get my meaning!
22. No Woman No Cry...live solo acoustic guitar. There's always something inherently sad in hearing a great song love with people quitly schmoozing and someone dumoping the bottles ni the crate in the back ground. I'll have a guess and say this was you, Mantis, playing live at the local for a couple of beers and the love of music? It's good!
So the Pearl Jam, Seu Jorge, Soundgarden, the Tyrone-cover, Breeders and Six Months In a Leaky Boat sre my favourites. Just Earth Angel, that electrofuzz-thing and Caroline Says don't cut the mustard but this is quite a good mix of tracks for the sunday afternoon. Thanks for your patience and the mix mate!
