I am, but my fascination with Ween right now is really something else. Brilliance that consistent is something you won't find anywhere else in rock today. And not something you'd find often elsewhere. Whine away about music not being up to par with "the standard set 40 years ago", but Ween, from GodWeenSatan to Shinola Vol. 2, pretty much piss all over that standard.
I've always been a fan, but viewed them mostly through DVD's and by the song. Yeah, I had GodWeenSatan and Chocolate and Cheese, and I acknowledged them as one of the top live acts on earth, but only recently have I sat down and tried to work my way through the whole catalogue. It's really something fucking else. There's just not another band from the last 30 years who've been so consistently brilliant. It's fucking amazing. I'm a total Weener these days.

Right now ... right this second ... Wilco are the best band on the planet. Yeah, it was rumoured they actually sold a CD outside the USA the other day. Turns out it was just New Mexico, but still a good effort.

There's sooooooo much good Canuck music out there right now, way more than anywhere else on the globe.
Rocky, dunno if you ever caught onto the praise we were slinging at it some time ago, but you really need Novillero's Aim Right for the Holes in their Lives. I'm slowly becoming convinced that it was the best album '05. Maybe the most perfect pop rock album of the decade.
I'll be catching Radiohead at Bonnaroo. Actually quite thrilled about it.

I'll keep it in mind after I have enough money to start buying music again. Might ask you for a reminder on the name of it though, since I always lose my little notes on these things.

Turns out it was just New Mexico, but still a good effort. Not my fault that you limeys don't recognize great music when it bites you on the ass! Europe didn't "get" R.E.M. until the nineties ... late nineties at that! And they didn't get Springsteen in a big way until Tunnel of Love ... some 12 years after Born to Run broke him big in the Colonies! I don't care if Wilco doesn't translate to foreign markets, to my (North) American ears, they're the best band on the planet (or at least they were ten minutes ago when I made that post). Just like the Clash and the Jam were the two best bands on the planet in '79 and '80, even though the Jam sold about a dozen records in the US.

Yeah, you better get ready for some despair in that case. It's likely (though not certain) that I'll vote for Wilco over Radiohead, but I would think (and Ken, feel free to tell me if I'm wrong) that it's almost certain that Mr. Holzman will make that choice. Not only will I take Wilco over Radiohead, I'll tak Pearl Jam over Radiohead as well. Right now ... right this second ... Wilco are the best band on the planet. And that's even after releasing that shitty A Ghost Is Born in '04 ... a great live album and some excellent EP tracks make up for one off LP, sort of like U2 with The Unforgettable Fire. I agree w/ this statement (except the AGIB part - that's a fantastic album Ken). Although, it may change May 2nd when Pearl Jam releases their new, self-titled album.

But the best pre'98 active band is Ween. They blow the competition to smithereens. *cough* Modest Mouse *cough* *cough*not even close*cough*

I go through Ween phases but I'm not in one right now... The best pre-'98 band would be a really hard choice. I've been listening to tons of The Faces lately...I feel I'm going into a Camper Van Beethoven phase as well...

Just on a point of order before the voting starts, patten, the Decemberists aren’t Canadian.

The Weakerthans are Canadian however, even though I don't want to be the first dickhead to start pointing out bands that could have been in the brackets, So with that said, let's pretend Godspeed You! Black Emperor are from Mexico, and thank Patten for putting this together.

Both of them are pre '98 bands though right?

no sir. Weakerthans released their two best in 2000 and 2003, and GYBE had their last two come out in 2000 and 2002.
