I agree, Republic by New Order is most definitely an ordinary recording... probably made it to number 11 on my list if it extended beyond 10 albums...
Thorny! I re - listened to Emotive the other day and was pleasantly suprised.... its better than I thought but not nearly as good as their original material! More of a trippy, atmospheric edge than harder rock (there's only really two harder rocking tracks that I can recall) to their sound on the album, and some pretty interesting / intense covers of some classic songs - they do manage to put their stampo on the material well!
It will never be as good as their own stuff, as most covers albums turn out anyways - but hey it was better than my initial appraisal the other day, and maybe possibly with more playings i could come to love it!
A sucessful venture by putting it on though!

"Southpaw Grammar" by Morrissey
Everything after "Pork Soda" by Primus.
"One Hot Minute" by the RHCP.

I stand (seemingly) alone in saying that Southpaw Grammar is a good record.
I agree that Kill Uncle and Maladjusted are just awful, steaming piles of cack, so it's not like I'm some blind fanboy with a hard-on for the Mozgod.
But SG has some of my favourite Mozzer songs, including the utterly brilliant "Southpaw", which remains my favourite Morrisset solo tune other than maybe "Late Night Maudlin Street".
Southpaw Grammar never stood a chance because it contained prog leanings at a time when prog was still a dirty word.
Of course, prog still is a dirty word, but critics find other labels these days, in a pathetic effort to circumvent the fact that they're basically praising a modern prog revival to the hilt.

"Southpaw Grammar" by Morrissey Everything after "Pork Soda" by Primus. "One Hot Minute" by the RHCP. I kinda liked 'One Hot Minute'; I don't think it's as bad as most make it out to be. I don't think it's their finest hour either, but I'd throw it in the underrated category.

There's a whole cult of us here who rank One Hot Minute in the top 3 RHCP albums.

I definitely agree it's not up to par w/their own original material, but it does make for a smooth listen now & again.

I'll meet you 'One Hot Minute' and raise you one 'Californication'...I especially can't stand Californication. Vaguely something about Kiedis' vocals having gone irrittatingly soft. Crooning even. Clever title too. Woo-hoo.
At least One Hot Minute's got 'Warped'...there's really nothing I'd freely choose to listen to from 'Californication'.
...sorry to be harsh, but that disc...oooh.

Not alone brother Jesus. I love Southpaw Grammar. Never understood why it took such a beating. I haven't heard the new new Moz. You Are The Quarry was great though. He's had some greats, and he's had some stinkers. That's the way it goes for most I s'pose. I didn't mind One Hot Minute when I first heard it. But it didn't survive many repeated listens. I still like "Pea" though, for some reason. And Californication just didn't fit with me, either. I liked "Scar Tissue" and the title track. "Otherside" too, I think, before it succumbed to being way too overplayed. All in all, that album was a whole shit load of filler to my ears. And Riot Act...I like that one as well.

I brought Riot Act into work w/ me today....figured I'd give it another listen before the new album.
I was listening to the Stones 'It's Only Rock N' Roll' album the other day, and it has some pretty bad stinkers on it....It's half good / half crap.

I thought "By The Way" was a much better record as it seemed that Frusciante had fully realized his powers in the band by then. I will say that I do like "Californication" alright and much better than "One not so hot Minute". I listened to "One Hot Minute" for about 3 days before I just took it back to the record store and begged them to let me trade it in for something else. It's the same reaction that I had to "Mellon Collie......".

Not really feeling Riot Act so far....the first two songs were good "Can't Keep" and "Save You", but "Love Boat Captain", and "Cropduster" aren't that good IMO. Just got to "Ghost" so far, so good....
