skvor - Still harbor a distaste for Mellon Collie? I never liked it much myself. I guess the only Pumpkins album I ever really thought anything positive about was Siamese Dream.
and
Paul, what do you think of "Thumbing My Way?"

Riot Act is a logical progression from Binaural. They're in slow decline. The new album will be shit, I fear. Of course, I'm hoping as much as anyone else that they've got something as good as No Code up their sleeves. One last hurrah, sort of thing.
But no, I don't see it happening.
I even fear for the new Tool album, to be honest.

Don't worry about the new Tool. It's kick-ass. Several songs are a bit Tool-by-numbers but a lengthy very atmospheric piece in the middle and the final track are stand outs.

I don't know if I trust a muppet's take on Tool. The last time I had a run-in with muppets and tools...well...we've already been there. Wait, when is the new Tool due?
Another album as good as Vitalogy would definitely be welcome. No Code too, though. Vitalogy's only slightly better.

This muppet had an advanced listen to the new Tool-album which is due on May 10 or thereabouts. The muppet works in music retail and owns the Tool-catalogue so the muppet feels quite qualified to open his gob and vent his opinion. This muppet is glad he hasn't chosen The Swedish Chef as his avatar...

Hmm, hadn't rely scanned this board so I'm late in responding...but here goes.
Rattle & Hum- I rather like it. I'm not so keen on Achtung Baby (bar a few tracks) and Zooropa which were more about textures and the idea of cutting up the traditional U2-sound with more modern sounds which for me didn't work. Rattle, in all its shoddy glory offers some great pearls that outweigh those albums. I Still Haven't Found..with the choir is great, the string rootsy Desire, Angel Of Harlem, When Love Comes To Town and the stunning All I Want Is You...even the throwaway Van Diemen's Land is just pretty darn good! Yes, it has some pedestrian moments- their covers of All Around The Watchtower and Silver & Gold aren't mu favourites and I don't care much for their Star Spangled Banner and Helter Skelter but the live versions of their own catalogue are really gritty- Bullet The Blue Sky absolutely howls with determination and Pride still stands as an anthem for the ages no matter how many times you have heard it.

Just have to correct a couple of things here ... Silver and Gold was a song that Bono wrote with Keith Richards and Mick Jagger (I think -- I remember it being Bono and two Stones, so I'm pretty sure it's the Glimmer Twins) for the anti-apartheidt Sun City effort. I don't know if the version that was cut for that LP is available on CD (it was written and recorded in a NYC hotel room), but U2's studio version is on the eighties B-Sides disc in their first GH. Also, the Star Spangled Banner is just a few seconds of Hendrix' version, if I remember correctly.

You're right about Star Spangled, it is Hendrix but I never was a fan even though I enjoyed seeing Jimi destroy that theme. It just sounded off on that album.
Silver & Gold- I quickly checked and yes, it is a U2-original but I'm sure it was recorded somewhere in the past- Sun City? That might be where I heard it first.

FWIW, I far prefer the studio version that was on the b-sides comp. I haven't heard the Sun City version in, something like twenty years, so I'm not gonna comment on it.

....Paul, what do you think of "Thumbing My Way?" I used to hate it, and hated it live as I thought it was a set killer. Now after listening to Riot Act again, I've warmed up to it. It's actually quite a nice little number, and maybe better than "Nothingman". Still don't know if I want it live, but I'll be more open to it than I was in 2003.... Perhaps I'll find out May 30th when they play in DC...

I know I'm not paul (that was my dad's name though), but I'll take the opportunity to hijack this question -- I honestly love Eddie tryin to be Bobby Dylan. I think it works. It's a nice little acoustic tune.

I even fear for the new Tool album, to be honest. Explain, O one whom Jesus resembles. Is not the TOOL moniker tantamount to a veritable guaranteed stamp of authentic greatness?

The new TOOL release 10,000 Days drops on May 2. I am of the impression that if it says "TOOL" on the cover, it will succeed in removing the top half of one's skull in the process of delivering its sonic contents to the clusters of neurotransmitters harboring within.
