skvor - Still harbor a distaste for Mellon Collie? I never liked it much myself. I guess the only Pumpkins album I ever really thought anything positive about was Siamese Dream. and Paul, what do you think of "Thumbing My Way?" Here's my honest view of everything after "Siamese Dream": They have a little above average records that aren't that great to listen through all the way through, but they do include some kick ass songs. It's not that I hate them per se, more so the production value and some of the lyrics.

Flood has fucked up his share of decent albums.

"They have a little above average records that aren't that great to listen through all the way through, but they do include some kick ass songs"
That pretty much sums up how I feel about the Smashing Pumpkins.

I don't know if it's Flood, since his production on Depeche Mode and "The Downward Spiral" were just flawless. I still think it was Corgan's ego and Flood was just some one that facsilitate that. I personally think they should have stuck with Butch Vig, but that's just me.

I dunno, i feel like the strongest material the pumpkins have presented to date can be found on Mellon Collie - yeah, I like it even better than Siamese Dream - Its whole complicated plethora of differing musical palettes appeals to me - and its got some pretty kick ass rockin' sorta moments on it, i must say! One of these afternoons I'm going to get it out and play the hell out of it, because its just about time...
Whatever people say about Corgan's ego, I justr like what he does - he probably does love himself and his output that little bit too much but hey I enjoy it and so does probably alot of people...
and yeah I'm even one of those people who LIKED the Future Embrace... :-)

Oh, at first I hated the Future Embrace, but that record has grown on me considerably. I like the style and I like that he tried to do something different. I just read that James Iha is helping out on the new Annie record. That should be pretty interesting.

I really need to listen to that album. I keep putting it off . . .

Emotional Rescue by the Rolling Stones is pretty bad, save for about 3 songs....
I guess this thread can also discuss overrated albums by good bands.
One that comes to mind for me is 'Physical Graffiti' by Led Zeppelin. Now I like this album for the most part, but I don't think it's nearly as good as most Zepp fans make it out to be. Same goes for 'Houses Of the Holy'. Well actually, IMHO I think this way of most Zepp albums, except 1 & 3.
Another album I tried to listen to again and just didn't like was 'St. Anger' by Metallica. These guys have been on a steady decline since 'Justice'. I've lost most interest in them, but I'm rooting for them, and hoping they come out w/ one more killer album that rivals the old days.

You can add me as one of the list of people who hates Metallica's "Black Album". That was a terrible album and cemented my further hatred for Bob Rock.

Emotional Rescue by the Rolling Stones is pretty bad, save for about 3 songs.... Which is still better then Undercover or Dirty Work. I don't hate the Black Album...it's no where near any of the albums that came before it, Load is a bit worse...Reload still worse yet. St. Anger is complete and total crap though. Aside from a few cool riffs it has nothing a good album should have.

Which is weird considering that monster bass player they have now. I'm really hoping the new one is the "return to form" that so many people claiming it's going to be. I bet the lyrics are still not so hot, but hopefully the music won't be as bad as St. Anger. It sounded like System of a Downica to me and in a not good way. Also, the snare sound on that album makes me want to climb the walls it's so annoying.

Metallica sucks. Let's face it, and move on.

I have no doubt Rick Rubin can force a better album out of those guys then Rock could at this point...meaning I'm fairly sure it'll be better then St. Anger. That still doesn't mean it'll be good.
Anyone one who denies the goodness of Master Of Puppets is simply fooling themselves. I have absolutely no illusions they'll ever come any where near that mark again

Eh, I can't go so far as to say that Metallica sucks. 4 Classic albums in a row is better than what most bands can muster. Their day is done for doing something great again that's for sure. I don't think Rubin can do with them what he did with the Peppers, Cash, or Neil Diamond.

That's exactly how I feel about Metallica. Those first 4 albums were back to back masterpieces. "The Black Album" was the first album that hinted at their [artistic, not commerical] decline.
St.Anger is totally unlistenable. Anyone who can sit through those 70+ minutes of distortion and tin cans is either hearing impaired or a masochist.
I don't have high expectations for the new Rubin produced affair either, even though I really do hope it rocks. At this point, I'd guess that it'll probably be a bit worse than "the Black Album" and a bit better than "Load". They do have a lot riding on this record. If it sucks, their careers as a relevant recording act are pretty much over, and they'll just turn into another mondern-day Black Sabbath, focusing on playing the "classics" on tour.
