which is pretty much what they did on the last tour 90% of the set lists were songs from the first four albums. When you become that band that only plays one or two songs from your new album, you need to re-evaluate.

I have high hopes for their upcoming album. And yes, I'm one of the few that liked St. Anger (who's the other? Scottsy?) but that should never happen again. The band was fucked up, the production on the album was fucked up and its a miracle I found it listenable at all but it was an album that needed to be made so that cooler heads could prevail and the band could move on.
If Rubin can do for these nuts what he did for Slipknot (which was reportedly one of the reasons the band wanted to work with him) then the results can be pretty good.

This is one of the many reason why I like PJ so much -- they play about 3 to 4 songs off each album everynight. They bulk of their set list from this tour seem to be focused on Ten, Vs., and Avocado. All of the other albums get attention too, but not as much as the other 3....The other night, they had a heavy Riot Act set list though....

What was the official reason why Jason left? Did he have a fall out w/ the band, or did he just not like the direction Metallica was going in? Rubin has a slick production quality about him, but he seems to work well w/ both legengs (JC, Petty, RHCP), and egos (audioslave), so hopefully he'll bring the best out of Metallica.

That's exactly how I feel about Metallica. Those first 4 albums were back to back masterpieces. "The Black Album" was the first album that hinted at their [artistic, not commerical] decline. St.Anger is totally unlistenable. Anyone who can sit through those 70+ minutes of distortion and tin cans is either hearing impaired or a masochist. I don't have high expectations for the new Rubin produced affair either, even though I really do hope it rocks. At this point, I'd guess that it'll probably be a bit worse than "the Black Album" and a bit better than "Load". They do have a lot riding on this record. If it sucks, their careers as a relevant recording act are pretty much over, and they'll just turn into another mondern-day Black Sabbath, focusing on playing the "classics" on tour. That last paragraph is 100% true. Yeah, what the hell was up w/ the production of St. Anger? The drum sound was rancid. But those first four albums (especially Kill and Master) were near flawless.

To my understanding, it was a fall out and it mostly had to do with James Hetfield being a dominant asshole. The big thing is that Newsted wanted to do side projects (especially in the long breaks between albums and touring) and Hetfield disapproved. And, according to the Some Kind of Monster documentary, Newsted quit just as the band planned to hire the shrink to work them through their problems and that turned him off. There may be other reasons but the overall is that for Newsted, being in Metallica restricted him creatively when he wanted to do other things.

I loved 'Some Kind Of Monster'. It actually made me want to give 'St.Anger' another shot. Unfortunately, just a couple of songs in, I once again took it out of the CD player. Nope, I don't think anything can ever change my mind on how much I hate that record.

Chinese-torture dilemma:
You're locked in a room, gun pointed to your head. You HAVE to choose which album to listen to for 24hrs on repeat.
St. Anger or REM's Around the Sun?
PS. "Pull the trigger" is not an option.
;D

Can I keep the volume really, really low? I won't mind listening to Around the Sun so much if I can't hear it ...
I haven't heard St. Anger, but I've yet to manage to get through AtS in one sitting. What an awful record.

With Around the Sun, R.E.M. have finally managed to make a record worse than U2's Rattle and Hum, long the standard bearer for really bad efforts by great eighties bands.

I forgive REM for Around The Sun. One totally shit album out of 15(?) isn't really bad. But if their next one is again on that level, I think they should just call it a day. They've given more than their fair share of great albums anyway.

Oh, and for the dilemma, I'd choose Around The Sun. I'd probably just sleep through it anyway. There is absolutely no way I could listen to St.Anger 20+ times in a row. If I were forced to, I'd ask for a padded cell, just in case. ;D

Yeah, I agree with you that I can forgive R.E.M. for AtS. It's still an awful record, though. I'm seriously considering getting rid of my copy ... I've got so many cds, it seems kind of silly to keep one that I (1) don't even like, and (2) never, ever, listen to.
But considering that there isn't another album in their entire catalog that I'd rate less than excellent, I'm not gonna hold Around the Sun against the boys from Athens. I do wish that Bill Berry would come back, though.

Honestly, I think I'd rather listen to St.Anger than Around The Sun.

Maybe if you played the two of them at the same time ... sort of like that Flaming Lips album from a few years back (Zaireka?).
