The Pixies are amazing. Pavement is just a Fall cover band with some East Coast "indie schmindie" non-sense thrown in. This is ridiculous.

Sonic Youth is also better than Pixies. Yeah, Sonic Youth is probably a little better than the Pixies. But Sonic Youth is way better than Pavement. The Pixies were GREAT. Pavement was great. The Pixies are right there with the Talking Heads and Radiohead. They're one of THE bands. Pavement's a great little outfit, and I'll take solo Malkmus over solo Francis, but they're no Pixies. This is all spot on. Don't quite agree with this though. Sonic Youth is way better than Pavement.

I'll give SY a nudge over Pavement, prolly, though there's more SY I don't like than Pavement I don't like.
Maybe that should've been the poll...

To say Pavement is a Fall cover band is like saying U2 is a Joy Division cover band. Wrong, in probably every possible way. Take "Slanted and Enchanted" and some of the songs on "CRCR" and tell me with a straight face that it doesn't sound ridiculously close to The Fall.

Even in the liner notes on the S & E reissue, Malkmus finally cops to them being, in the beginning, nothing more than a shameless rip off of The Fall. With "Wowee Zowie" on, it's a different story, but the early stuff is so close to The Fall it's not even funny. I'm not saying I don't like it, I just think The Pixies had more of their own sound than Pavement did.

And U2 is not even close to being a Joy Division cover band. They only thing that U2 is good at is writing shit music with shit lyrics that just happened to get produced by Eno and Lanois. It's fucking amazing how U2 has made a career out of milking the same Eno basslines for 25 years and writing maybe 2 songs that I ever liked. "Sunday Bloody Sunday" is a good song as well as "Bullet the Blue Sky" but the rest of it is such uninspired bullshit to me.

I don't think Pavement sound much like the Fall. I like Pavement I really do, one of the best bands of the last twenty years easy, that being said they're not the same level of great as Sonic Youth and The Pixies.

Yeah, but Kurt Cobain thought Smells Like Teen Spirit was a complete Pixies ripoff and it doesn't actually sound like the Pixies at all.

For me, it goes:
Sonic Youth Pavement Pixies
I am biased because Pavement and Sonic Youth are probably my favorite bands, and Pixies never cliqued for me. Never cared much for Black Francis.
Oh, and TV On The Radio does Mr. Grieves better than Pixies do.

Agreed on the Nirvana thing, ded, but dude, I don't see how you can listen to Westing or S & E and not hear The Fall.
kMc, I love the Pixies, but I have to side with you on the TVOR cover of "Mr. Grieves". That was genius.

I like TV On The Radio, and it's a decent cover, but that's like saying you prefer the Radiodread version of OK Computer.
