There was a Stereophonics LP out around the same time that was pretty funky, too. "Connected," I think ...

Great recent listens, BTW, DED. "The Butterfly Collector" is such an amazing song, and All Mod Cons ... sheer perfection through and through.
Now there's no more swimming in a guitar shaped pool, no more reporters at my beck and call, no more cocaine now it's only ground chalk, no more taxis now we'll have to walk. But didn't we have a nice time?

What do you guys think about Weezer? Is Pinkerton a good enough album to be considered more than just mediocre in your opinions? The blue albums is a frickin classic IMO, but Pinkerton I never really got into...thoguhts?

Pinkerton is better than the Blue Album, IMO. By a pretty significant margin.

Stereo MCs, yeah, that's what I meant. I started thinking after I hit "post" that I'd screwed the name up.
Weezer? Eh. Too clever by half, IMO. Even their songs I like ("Buddy Holly" fer instance) have this kind of smart-ass veneer to them that turns me off.
I dunno, I think Rocky's probably better positioned to talk about Weezer than I am. Be sure to ask him nice though.

To be honest, I don't even care if I ever hear Weezer again. They are a band that was overplayed by everyone that I know (and most people that I don't know). They are also a band that threw away all of their promise to release a series of mediocre to shitty albums after those first two classics. I will always love those first two albums. But in the past. I don't need to hear them anymore.
That being said, the Blue Album is not only great, it is also a significant marker of time for people of my age. That album was huge, and it's appeal was far reaching, to the point that it really was one of those generation-defining albums. Even if it's profile wasn't quite as high as some of the other albums of that time, it is one that has really endured with soooooo many people of my generation.
And Pinkerton is everything that was great about that first album, but with an extra effort at trying to be the Pixies. It's just perfect. But it too is really closely tied to a certain time and place for me, so I rarely spin it.
The Green Album is better than it's usually credited for, but still sucks. Maladroit has two or three good songs, and the rest are awful. And that last album isn't good enough to wipe my ass with.

Hey, thanks for deferring to me, Ken. I think that Luke is probably the go-to Weezer guy here though. Not sure if he's checked out this board.

i need to listen to Pinkerton again, its been years since I've given it a listen. Used to have it on cd, but dont know what happened to it... What Rocky said about the blue album is exactly the kind of thing I want for my one-album wonders list: albums that were huge, affected a generation, then were not duplicated by the artist who recorded it ever again(thats if Pinkerton was mediocre--which is how I remember it, but so many other people tell me it was good that i feel obligated to go back and give it another listen). Some of these artists on my list never had a chance because they died, others fell apart because of band squabbles or law suits, but the ones I really want to find are the ones that simply started making shit albums. Its harder to find this last type than you might think...

I think that Pinkerton is the better album (especially if you're a Pixies fan), but there's no doubt that the Blue Album made a much, much bigger impact. Artistically Weezer definately topped themselves with the follow-up (although not after that), but commercially and culturally, the Blue Album was much bigger by a longshot.

I see the genius of the Pixies, although I think they had some pretty crucial flaws--their drummer for one. And Black Francis's voice when he tries screaming for another. I know they brought the whole abrupt soft-loud-soft transition thing to forefront, but geez, Led Zep did the same thing. Dont get me wrong--I like the Pixies but I think they are slightly over rated. The only more overly rated IndieCat in the last 20 years is Steve Albini who recorded their surfa rosa.

strawman-dont make me start on Zeppelin. Actually I think the Pixies could kick Zeppelins ass any day of the week, but I still lke Zeppelin. (John Bonham? Cmon!)
PEW--You know whats overrated man? American IDOL. Billy IDOL. 30 Seconds to MARS. JAMES fucking BLUNT. AMBIEN. FRIENDS on DVD. Television. Movies. DARYL WALTRIP. SNOW PATROL. BRITNEY SPEARS SHAVED HEAD!!!!!!! LEAVE THE PIXIES ALONE.
