Mary -- just wait till you're well into your thirties, haven't seriously listened to the Clash in ages, and stumble upon some young college grad who is absolutely in love with them. Watch how that can rekindle your own passion for "the only band that matters." You know what I'm talking about ... awwwww. that was 8 years ago ya know!!! but seroiusly - i'm not going to have to wait terribly long before i'm in my thirties, so.... (btw i was actually still in college when i first starting posting on rs.com. how crazy is that?? i was a senior, at dartmouth... december 1998... fuck...)

I really don't get 'sick' of bands as it seems a few of you do.......I may tire of certain albums, but it doesn't take long till a bit later where it is just as exciting to give it a re-listen................. This is pretty much how I feel too.

That's kinda neat in a way -- You're whole college experience both as student and teacher has included RS. I was talking w/ a friend the other day about this site, and granted I didn't know many of you on the old boards, we've all been chattin' for damn near a decade. That's fucking nuts! But cool. The only ones hear now that I talked to on the old boards was Ken and Rocky. We used to argue quite a bit on the VU vs. Doors board. But b/c of their staunch love of the VU, I went out and bought their 4 studio albums as a direct result of that board. I think some dude named Bob Fre -- something, I forgot - posted there a lot too. I see Pissin' used to be a member here, guess he got banned or something - we used to chat a lot too.

oh i suppose it's possible i'll pop in rubber soul one day in 7 years or something and be blown away by how awesome it is. never say never. but there is such an amazing, wonderful, weird, crazy world of music out there that goes soooooo beyond anything people could even have imagined back in 1965, right now i'd rather explore that crazy world than listen to norwegian wood for the twenty-thousandth time.

I voted for the Clash already as well. Me and Bow are united in stopping your Axis of Yoga Evil. That makes three of us. And Dolly will join our side when she returns from holiday. Bonjour! J'adore le Clash! And the tally rises by one... No contest.

He was a moderator at RS.com and one of the coolest guys I've ever met on the internet. It would be so nice if he posted here, but he's a very busy man with a lot of projects under his belt, so I don't look for him to show up any time in the near future. Yeah, pissin got banned. He had too much fun trying to piss other people off, I think, is the reason. I don't think he liked me much.

Mary's posts on the Beatles sum up my feelings on them to a tee. I enjoyed them as a child immensely, and overdid them as a teenager, but they have no relevance at all for me personally these days. I just get incredibly bored when I hear them - even songs like A Day in the Life, Tomorrow never comes, Helter Skelter - all which were incredibly 'out there' I guess in their day, and which thrilled me when I listened to them for the first couple of hundred times or so realising 'my god! my parents were right! this really was the best band of all time!' - but now - meh. The Clash meanwhile never grow old for me - or at least they haven't yet. As Ken says, it's great to revisit the halcyon days of finding a band you fucking loved and knew you would love forever in a vicarious fashion as a new acquaintance wonders at the brilliance of London Calling and why the hell hadn't they heard it before?
Also, I don't like the idea that the best band and the best music is set in stone either. I'd rather force myself to give the Police another try (noooooo!) than concede that any music I ever discover will be inferior to a bunch of albums released before I was even born.
The Beatles have earned their place in history, sure - as have The Clash. But it shouldn't be mandatory to bow at their altars forever and a day.

Do you know who else I don't give a shit about anymore? The Pixies. They're right up there with the Beatles and the Clash.

I've always loved the Pixies from the moment I heard them, and I'll always have a soft spot for them, but I just have no desire to play them for the foreseeable future. It's already been at least a year since my last listen.

well, this ol fogie, who adores both Beatles and Clash still has a very very soft and tender spot for the fab liverpoolian four........I tell ya, from the moment I saw them in Ed Sullivan show circa Feb of 1964 as an impressionable 7 year old they just resonated for me..and to this day, they still do,..so I have nary lost any of my adoration for the Beatles......but I can say the same for U2, Clash, Magazine, Fleetwood Mac (pre nicks-buckingham era), steely dan, rod stewart, doors, replacements, etc etc............I really don't get 'sick' of bands as it seems a few of you do.......I may tire of certain albums, but it doesn't take long till a bit later where it is just as exciting to give it a re-listen................. Hear, hear!! And I am also all over Paul Cook's side on this, regardless of the seemingly sensible argument that Mary B presents. Still WhereTF does 'sensible' have a place in the way that music affects you? So fucking WHAT if it seems to trump the chances of some other band being called 'the Greatest Ever' or not. Either 'they' (these future 'Rawk Einsteins') will or they won't. Being bothered that way about it seems totally ridiculous to me.

Im with bowieglou too. I voted the Police (even though my opinion of Sting, like it matters, is horrible!). I love the Clash, but I do not believe they were the ONLY BAND THAT MATTERED.
