I haven't heard the new Wilco yet, so the Shins' Wincing the Night Away is so far the best album I've heard from this year.

Melonious...I've heard/read quite a bit of the Shins but know none of their output...recommendations for best one lp and brief synopsis as to type of music?..... I haven't heard the new Wilco yet, so the Shins' Wincing the Night Away is so far the best album I've heard from this year.

bow - '07 seems to have brought albums by Field Music, Fields, and The Field (80, 68 and 93 respectively on Metacritic). What next? Albums by Shin, The Shins and Shin Pad? There's just no need for it, frankly. I tell you what, I'll get all three and tell you whether the metascores prove that 20 magazine reviews can be as equally wank as 1 magazine review. Although that sort of score analysis probably more your alley than mine.

bowiglou,
The Shins are one of the best bands of the decade. I've heard it said that they're from the Brian Wilson school and I would have to somewhat agree. They've produced 3 albums starting in '01. I would have to say that the most recent, Wincing the Night Away, is the most solid album of the 3. But you MUST listen to their 2 best songs, purchase them on itunes or what have you, to really know how amazing they are. Neither of them are on their latest album. They are "Gone For Good" and "New Slang." Two classics indeed. If you want, I can make you a mix and include some of the best Shins on it. I love making people mixes so it wouldn't be a task. Lemme know.

Dude, why did you delete the "don't listen to JLLM" part? That was the best part of your post! I can leave or take the shins, but I support anything that entails not listening to JLLM.

I never thought I'd say this, but I think the new Crowded House album is a little.... dull. Bummer.

I never thought I'd say this either, but the new Erasure album is 10x better than both Chris Cornell's and Crowded House's latest releases. I dare anyone who has heard all 3 [with an open mind of course] to dispute what I'm saying here. Erasure's album might just make it to my top 5 of the year. I kid you not. No one is more surprised than myself for liking it so much.
I don't think I've heard a note of the Shins' music.

Actually bow, forget the shins and check out Soil & "Pimp" Sessions. You strike me as the kind of person who likes insane/intense Japanese instrumental jazz. Well instrumental except for some megaphone shouting by Shachou.

and isn't the strict definition of 'wank' - masturbation, thus JLLM, when you exhort 'equally wank' does that in our simplistic US translation mean "equally-masturbatory".... and if does mean 'equally masturbatory' how do you precisely operationalize (and measure) that phenomenon? love bowiglou bow - '07 seems to have brought albums by Field Music, Fields, and The Field (80, 68 and 93 respectively on Metacritic). melonous, thank you so much for that very gracious offer...I would love a shins 'mix' so just let me know how you want to transact this and if I can return the favor (e.g, "Bowiglou sings Lizard King Chestnuts in the Shower")....... bowiglou, The Shins are one of the best bands of the decade.
