It's not an easy year, I think... I haven't found alot out there that has grabbed my interest, aside from releases from trusted bands... a few new local Australian bands I have picked up on... but there is actually a reasonable dearth of new and interesting music going on at this stage...
Last year was a bit of a standout for me though... lots of great stuff coming out, lots of good new bands, alot of trusted artist releases...
I suppose I should expect that this year should be a bit lacklustre, but it is sorta dead right now... I suspect choosing my top ten albums of 2004 might be harder due to a lack of good stuff as opposed to the an over abundance last year... we shall see!!! :-)
It might pick up as the year burns on!!!

yeah, about the earliness of the year and trusted bands, scott. the possibilities of new weezer, r.e.m., u2, pearl jam, and others gets me excited, though. i think this could go from being a slow year to one of the best in recent history.

YOu make a good point there... I do remember 2002 being much the same as this... not too many great releases or known / trusted bands in the first half, but a strong run home in the second half of the year saw it improve quite a bit... lets hope so!

exactly what i'm thinking of. riot act, audioslave, and one by one suddenly smacked us in the face, all in the same month or so. and for the nirvana fans who were interested, the greatest hits.

There's an amazingly talented, progressive, new, hardcore/metal band out of Canada that anyone who digs serious thrash metalcore shit should check out:
INTO ETERNITY
Seriously......it is like a cross between IRON MAIDEN and DREAM THEATRE or something. Fucking sick.

Weezer has already announced that their album won't be out until spring of 2005 at the earliest. Otherwise I'm with you here.

Contrary to the general mood of this thread, I've been well impressed with 2004, simply 'cos there's a changing of the guard, and a lot of great, new(ish) bands making their mark: Razorlight, The Killers, Franz Ferdinand...
Also impressed by The Stills and the forthcoming Interpol album.
I'm waiting on hearing albums by Hope of the States, The Walkmen, The Rapture, Scissor Sisters, The Subways... quite a bit to check out before I can really give a definitive answer.

Jesus - Have you heard TV On The Radio? It might be one you could go either way on, but I rank it near or at the top of this year's crop to date.

I pretty much agree with Jesus - the year is looking not bad at all thus far in my books but I'm feeling like there's quite a few more albums I need to hear even to do a mid-year list.
A few that I don't believe have been mentioned yet, however:
If you like Rush, New Order, Kraftwerk and/or 80's music in general, you might enjoy Liberation by Trans Am.
Ron Sexsmith's Retriever is an accomplished, sweet-sounding bit of neo-60s pop - without at all being slavishly retro.
Patti Smith's Trampin' is another solid album for her with a few songs (My Blakean Year, Radio Baghdad, Mother Rose) that I would rank among her very best.

Always been curious about Trans Am. You've thrown Rush in the mix there Doc, so am I to assume there's a of prog type stuff in the mix?

Yeah, strip all it down and they're basically a power trio in the Rush/Primus mode, Riley. There seems to me to be a clear line back to those bands in their instrumental attack. Their songs are primarily instumental, BTW.

Youssou N' Dour's Egypt will probably end up as my "best album" of 2004 ...
