Only Japanese band I've heard is that one in Kill Bill vol 1. Unless we're countng James Iha. Naturally, I looked up the Kill Bill album over the Internet to see what band it was. Tomoyasu Hotei? Ugh. Hopefully, you'll find that we have better music than that here! Anyway, great. Just email your address to ryosukemusic@mail.goo.ne.jp and I'll see if I can work something up over the weekend. Any requests on what kind of stuff you want me to include/avoid? EDIT: Oh, and is the James Iha solo any good? I liked some of the songs he wrote when he was in the Pumpkins ("Blue" or "Blew" or something like that).

Yep, I'm a closet Smashing Pumpkins fan.

My mail account is fucked, Ryo, so I'll PM my address to you over these boards instead. Cheers.
The band from Kill Bill was an all-girl rock band called something like the 5,6,7,8's, or something similar. Can't really remember.

Nice list Ndy, although I didn't think you were that fond of The Walkmen disc. Has it done some growing?

I found that walkmen disc really tedious. But I listened to their first(?) album yesterday, and it had some real nice U2-ish moments. I think I'll give 'em another chance.

Ah, the 5, 6, 7, 8's. I've heard of them, and I probably have heard their music at some random listening station at some random record store. Can't remember a single fucking thing about them though. Oh, and I got your pm! 22. The Libertines (Rough Trade America) You know, when I first saw this, I thought that Rough Trade America was the title of the album. Talk about showing loyalty to your label! But hey, if you're going to name your album after a label, it might as well be Rough Trade, huh? On that note, the song "Rough Trade" by Stiff Little Fingers is a cool tune.

Yeah, they seem to have enough going for them that even when they're not knocking you on your arse, you just keep going back for more. Like you're missing something.
I was initially luke warm, as were a few other CanConners to You Forgot It In People by Broken Social Scene, but I'm now convinced it's one of the best albums released in easily the last 15 years.
Something rewarding about having to work for it as a listener every once in a while.

You know I'm not gonna argue with that one Riley. My fave of 2003. Yeah, I didn't much like Bows and Arrows at first, despite my lurve for "The Rat". But over time I've figured out that given the right mood it's really a gem. I may have placed it a bit high on my list (as I was hungover and playing it from my computer speakers while typing), but that'll change by year's end. It's still top 10 material though.

I tried and tried and TRIED to get into The Walkmen, if only for an excuse to keep "The Rat" in my CD player. I just can't get into the anti-climatic hunk of shit, sorry. I just don't understand how you can make one song that's so awesome and the rest just a bunch of moody racket. First disappointment I've purchased in recent memory...
But hey, to each their own...
My (predictable) Faves of the Year...
10. Blonde Redhead- Misery is a Butterfly 9. Wilco- A Ghost Is Born 8. Morrissey- Quarry 7. Muse- Absolution 6. Bjork- Medulla 5. The Libertines 4. Modest Mouse- Good News 3. The Killers- Hot Fuss 2. Franz Ferdinand 1. Local H- Whatever Happened to PJ Soles?

Ah, you've decided the Libertines' album is better than Bjork's then luke?

Yeah, while making burgers with the ol' lady last night, it came on in my player, and it was just so damn fun, I decided I liked it better.
The biggest disappointment on that list is Modest Mouse. I was really counting on those guys to drop the album of the year, but instead they dropped their worst...which is still better than most anything else, but still, it's their worst.
And as solid as that Local H album is, I still think that the No Fun EP they dropped in '03 raised my expectations a bit high even for their latest masterpiece.
There have been more great albums this year than last, but I still haven't heard anything in '04 that matches The No Fun EP or...oh yes...Permission to Land.

I'm not sure there's anything in the history of recorded music that quite matches up to Permission To Land.

I tell ya, for an album that was supposed to be all schtick..well...it's still in my car's cd player, that's for sure.

Thought people might find some of this interesting. The big local independent record store, Amoeba Records, always releases a book every few months of their favorite records of the year thus far, in various categories. They compile the most popular choices in the front of the book, and then allow every employee space to rave about their own personal faves. It always makes for interesting reading - the lists in front are usually pretty predictable, but you often find very quirky intriguing stuff you never even heard of on the personal lists. In any case, here are some of the more pertinent most-popular lists for these boards:
