Mmmmmmmm turkey ... I spent the whole friggin' morning in a pointless mediation (which I'd said two weeks ago wasn't going to work, but the judge and opposing counsel insisted we mediate even after I told them exactly where the problem would be [and it's not with me or my client] and I was right, but it took better than two hours for them to admit defeat -- ARGH!) and I'm hungry as hell, I've got about four contradictory things that I need to do this afternoon, so I need to cancel at least one of them, and I'm typing this instead of going to get lunch because ... well because I just need to vent, I guess. Friggin' "mandatory" mediation -- how the hell can you make an irrational person mediate in good faith?
This case was supposed to go to trial last month, and the court made us delay it for this mediation session. It's probably going to be this fall before this thing goes to trial ... god I hate family law sometimes.

Do you mostly do divorce, Ken?
My aunt does family law, and wow, she's told me some pretty crazy stories about people with too much money who want to use it all to make their former spouses as miserable as possible. It's also pretty disgusting the way some people use their children as pawns to infuriate their ex-husband or ex-wife.
She also represents children in custody disputes where children need their own attorneys, and has developed a reputation for being the person to go to for gay couples who want to adopt. That stuff seems much more rewarding.
I'm not sure what types of things you do specifically, Ken, but if its anything like the petty divorce stuff that she has to deal with on a daily basis that she's told me about, then dude, feel free to vent. That stuff sounds horrible.

My practice is usually about 50% criminal work, around 25-30% family, and the rest in general civil work. The case today is both a family law case (other party filed for "divorce" but they were never married) and a bunch of contradictory fraud and property claims. It's a huge friggin' mess. We were willing to go for a very reasonable split on the only real asset they own together, but they wouldn't even get into the same universe as far as settlement goes.
It's one of those cases where when you hear from either party, you think their story makes sense, but there is absolutely no common ground. I always feel like asking this kind of couple, "have you ever met? done anything together? because from what I'm hearing, you all have never even been in the same room at the same time." It's just frustrating as hell. And I've got another (similar) family law case that is going to trial on Friday, unless the other party gets a(nother) continuance, or comes up with a bunch of money to settle the case. So for the past couple of weeks, my practice has been more like 75% family, 20% civil litigation, and 5% criminal -- which is a recipe for unhappiness!
Got to go get some lunch ...

With each passing day, it becomes clearer and clearer that Chrisfan is suffering from some sort of nervous breakdown, or perhaps some degenerative brain disease. I think it's due to a total system failure of her moral foundation. By which I mean, she's intuitively recognizing with each passing day that the people, the organizations and the principles that she believes she stands for are either not what she believed them to be, or were simply failures from the get go. Your thoughts? We're all as mad as hatters here

Never heard of anyone incompetent enough to set the thing on fire... Just watch me try and make toast sometime.

Luke -- Watch the news around Thanksgiving ... there's always some folks who set their homes on fire while deep frying their turkey. There's usually beer and trailer parks involved, if I remember right ... Exactly ... LMAO !!

Well, I thought about being "heart healthy" and having a Subway turkey sandwich for lunch ... but then decided it was too crowded and went to Taco Cabana instead! Chile Rellanos ... mmmmmmm ... I can practically feel my arteries hardening as I write this ...

People! Keep these threads on topic! Looks like you're trying to "pick a fight" with Chris Shin. As for Taco Cabana...I love their chicken enchiladas always with fresh jalapeno peppers. Their beef/chicken fajita's are great as well. Again with fresh jalapeno peppers.

I was gonna have the chicken fajita tacos (it's at least not THAT bad for my heart), but then the dude in front of me ordered the rellanos, which I haven't had in ages, and I just couldn't resist.
Oh well, I was planning on riding the bike tonight anyway, so that's just a few more miles I'll have to pedal to even things out.

Irony is alive and well. Didn't you see Colbert's performance over the weekend?

Yeah, but did anyone really think that that Colbert thing was funny?
God, what the hell is wrong with me?

Does irony have to be funny?
I laughed through the whole performance, FWIW. But maybe the nitrous oxide leak next door had something to do with that.

Jesus, I guess irony truly is dead. You're right. Mrs. Irony Truly passed away peacefully last Wednesday. She would have been 102 today.
