^^^^ What did you think of the Pearl Jam gig w/ Petty Rocky? Oh wow, I posted a few thoughts over on Sedaka and didn't even realize I didn't post anything here. Anyway, here's what I had to say over there... I was about 5 rows back from the corner of the stage on Stone's side. Here was PJ's set list from last night's show: Wasted Reprise, Life Wasted, World Wide Suicide, Severed Hand, Corduroy, Animal, In Hiding, Even Flow, Gone, Better Man/(Save it for Later), Do The Evolution, Why Go, Jeremy, Inside Job, Comatose, Rearviewmirror Encore: Crazy Mary, Leash, Porch PJ was great, although the sound system there wasn't doing them any favors. The only real complaint I have about their playing was that Mike's solo in "Even Flow" suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked the big one. Seriously, you could tell that he was just trying to find some groove and was completely missing it. Not good. Everything else sounded solid though. Eddie said something about the band having a really rough day, and said some cryptic words about death and the presciousness of life later on, so I'm thinking someone in the band lost a family member or something yesterday. The highlight of the show for me was, I think, "Betterman" the crowd sang the entire first verse and chorus. It was beautiful. Too bad the set was a little shorter than their usual, but I was sort of expecting it since it was more of a Petty show. As soon as Pearl Jam ended, we bolted out of the amphitheater to the other end of the fairgrounds and caught the last two songs of Elvis Costello's set. Then we busted it back to the amphitheater and were back in our seats about 5 minutes before Petty started up. Petty's set was almost exactly as it was from whatever show your post is from (and yeah, "Mystic Eyes" was the jam), except that he threw "Little Red Rooster" in there somewhere. It was definately more of a Petty crowd than a PJ crowd. And a lot of the Petty fans were really shitty to PJ. Oh well. I'm not a big Petty fan, but his show was fun. He hammed it up way more than I expected. He really does look like he's back from the dead though. EdVed sang two songs with him (he sang pretty much all of "The Waiting" and again that one verse of "American Girl"). A few additional thoughts here a week later... The setlist was a little disappointing I guess. Mostly in its brevity, but also because I think the band was aware that a good chunk of the audience (definately a majority actually) was there for Petty and not them, and so they played a bit more of a festival type set, loaded up with the hits (and yeah, I know they always played the hits, but it seems like with the shortened set, it was all the other stuff that got dropped). They threw in a couple lesser known ones, but for the most part there was nothing very surprising at all. That being said, other than Mike's disaster of a guitar solo, the set was solid. As far as bands playing larger venues right now, I'd have to imagine they're right at the top of the list.

Tom Petty's fucking cheesy. I really tried to get into that set at Bonnaroo, to enjoy Stevie Knicks coming out with him and all that shit, but really, he's such a boring old guy. He was at the top of his game, but his game is so goddamn corny that I didn't really care. Anyone who'd get bored with PJ in anticipation for that should be flogged.

There were some people next to us and behind us who were not only sitting down during PJ's set, but actually trying to sleep. And one of them shot me a dirty look for mocking Petty's goofy little dance moves. Fuck that guy.

Yeah, you should have kicked him in the face.
Travelling Wilburys aside, it really pisses me off when people put Tom Petty up there with legitimate legends like Neil Young and Bob Dylan. He's not even a Paul Simon. A Don Henley, tops.
Vedder should have pushed his old skinny ass offstage and broke into "Not For You".

That's the impression I got anyway. During Pearl Jam's set he talked about how much he leaved Petty a couple times, as well as talking about Petty's guitar player in a couple spots. It seemed like genuine reverence. Yeah, Petty has a place in rock history, but it sure isn't up there with the all time greats. I'm still not really sure how he ended up in the Wilburys (although Jeff Lynne had no business in that group either, so whatever).

Yeah, I know a lot of legitimate music fans who like Tom Petty, but I seriously just will never understand how anyone can rack him up there any higher than Don Henley or even Phil Collins. He doesn't have a single song that isn't some boring, formulaic, predictable old fogey number, and all the "hits" are just ready made for a bunch of old people to chant along with live. Occasionally he'll throw in some lame ass "anti-establishment" tune that's just painful. Blah.

Petty is awesome. This Petty bashing will not stand.I wouldn't argue he's on the same level Young or Dylan but that guy is sure as shit better then Paul Simon or Don Henley.

See? There we go. Guy whose taste in music I respect comes out and defends Petty. It's like my mind can't even comprehend it. There are SO many artists who I can understand the love for even if I can't stand them, but he just baffles me, especially since I'm familiar with his entire catalogue.

Actually, "can't stand" is too strong of words. There's some Petty tunes I can bob my head to, I just don't think I could ever do more than that.

I like some of Petty's songs. He's good, but not great. I've never been a fan, but I did enjoy his show. Pearl Jam definately upstaged him as far as I'm concerned, and his fans were a bunch of yokels. But other than his stupid rock star poses between songs, it was a good show.

I can understand that. I can totally see how Petty's pretty middling for some people. He's not exciting but he's good. He's not breaking down any walls but what he does he does well. He has managed not to become too much of a nostalgia act and for a boring old rock guy he's stayed fairly relevant. Which is what seperates him from Paul Simon really, who's albums are pretty good through Graceland (which is brilliant) but derails shortly thereafter. Petty's made his share of clunkers, but he's got a couple five star albums too.

I like Tom Petty. Sure he's no Jimi Hendrix. Lou Reed, Ray Davies, etc...but IMO he's way more than Don fucking Henly. I think Wild Flowers is a near flawless album. Sucks that the Petty crew wasn't more open to Pearl Jam....I read some reviews from Stones fans when PJ opened for them last summer, and the Stones fans were highly impressed (at least the ones who post on the internet).

Inclusion of Parachutes appears dandy. As far as I'm concerned, they better play it out while it's fresh. *imagines Low Light and Parachutes*
