well...im assuming the loss of his hand put a stop to any....."extracurricular"......activities, so he just had to focus on being a jedi. Hey, this brought up something else. Empire magazine recently put a Star Wars DVD guide with one of their recent issues and in one of the critiques a writer theorizes that Lucas' stupid idea of Midi-chlorians actually pays off and explains something about Vadar in the last 3 episodes. Ever wonder why Vadar can't summon Force lightning, for example? The article suggests that (and in keeping touch with the rationale that midi-chlorians is in the bloodstream) since Vadar lost all his limbs and is "more man than machine", as a result he lost a lot of midi-chlorians and is rendered limited in his powers.

In keeping touch with this theory, could Luke be somewhat limited in his powers due to his lost arm?

In keeping touch with this theory, could Luke be somewhat limited in his powers due to his lost arm? I don't think so, b/c it was just his hand...Vader/Anakin lost his legs and arms.... There is plenty to knit pick from these movies, but ultimately I think the major flaw was Lucas writing the screen play and directing....it would have been interesting had someone like Ron Howard or Spielberg directed the prequels; I think the actors would have come across better, and we would have certainly had better writing.

He could've brought back Lawrence Kasdan (he doesn't seem to be very busy). But I can't keep saying this enough: Joss Whedon could've been the man for the job.

That would have been a fantastic idea.....
So what are some things y'all would have like to see in the prequels? Or do you think they're fine just the way they are?

i realize that the story arc necessitated that episode three be where anakin turns to the dark side and becomes vader and all the shit comes together, but honestly, episodes 1 and 2 could just as easily have been one movie.....there seems to be so much filler......i would have loved to see an evolving empire, as well as the rebellion....not to mention vader himself.....

Episodes 1 & 2 should have been condensed and especially the first film should have mirrored the original in that the 3 principals have an adventure together that could have pretty much established your whole characters for the full 3 movies. The seperation in all but the third film is an obvious weakness that directly leads to the failed romance that holds back the awesome action pieces of Clones. I have some huge notes and adjustments written down somewhere I need to find. It's all in hindsight so it's easy to pick things now, but I think a lot of it shows how good Lucas's ideas were, but more in final execution is where they didn't full come together.

and i actually read somewhere that out of the story that lucas came up with for the prequels, 60 percent of it was in the third movie...so that means episodes 1 and 2 only had 20 percent a piece......

I saw the first Star Wars original movie when I was in Firenze, Italy, on Christmas Day ...
When I saw the poster advertizing "La Guerra Del Stellari" I knew I was sure to understand what was going on no matter what language the actors were speaking !!
And for my money, the show was much more about watching the crowd inside the theater than the action on the screen ... !
I'm more a fan of Indiana Jones anyway ...

phil as in "phil le scarecrow"?.....i think i remember you.......
anyway......yeah........i think lucas definitely should have let someone else direct.....he was always better at just coming up with the stories.......and he cant write dialouge for crap....
like "hold me anakin, hold me like you did at the lake on naboo...."
at that point in the theater i just about sprayed a mouthful of mountain dew on the back of some poor persons head.....

I'm gonna (once again) come to the defense of the prequals. I honestly don't think that Phantom Menace is a bad movie at all, taken on its own terms. It's a fun film, that sets the stage for what's to come. The visuals were nothing short of stunning, and Jar-Jar was the worst thing about it, but he wasn't THAT bad. Was he really any more offensive than the treatment of African-Americans in Traffic, or of Hispanics in Shaft? Hell, was Jar-Jar really any worse than the Ewoks? IMO he beat the hell out of Wicket (and I loved Jedi).
But I don't go to Star Wars films to get insight into the depths of the human condition -- I go to have a good time, to be visually blown away, and to tap into some of the classic mythic archetypes. And all three of the prequals (and particularly Sith) did this in spades.
For myself, seeing both Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi at the peak of their powers (Lucas has said specifically that Vader after he put on the suit was no match for Vader before his injuries, so this was Darth Vader at his peak) was more than enough to satisfy my junior high dreams. I walked out of PM and dreamed of lightsabres that night; walked out of Clones in anticipation of what was to come; and walked out of Sith completely satisfied and ready to cue up the original Star Wars again. Maybe I'm just easily amused, but I'm satisfied with what George accomplished here.
And if I were going to change anything in the prequals, I would have brought in a more charismatic actor than Liam Neesen to play Qui-Gon (and someone better at acting with green screens -- this is a real skill that Neesen simply doesn't have; his acting was really worse than Jar-Jar as I think about it). Likewise, I'm not sure that Portman was the best pick for Padme ... maybe Kiera Knightly might have been a better choice (again, she just seems more comfortable with green screen work).
OK, that was rambling and under-developed, but anyway, my point (and I do have one) is simply that I think that many fans expected too much. Take them for what they are, the greatest Saturday matinee series ever made, and enjoy 'em!
