I only half agree with this. Am I naive to believe that familial love should trumpet subjective value systems?

shoot, i didn't see this before. subjective value systems, eh? you phrased that exceedingly well; it's hard to argue against without seeming like a hard-assed conservative nut.
familial love is great to see. whichever of the two sides (parents vs kids) is being closed and smug and reactionary is the 'wrong' side. Whether its the kids being rebellious or arrogant for no real sighted purpose, or whether it's the parents being totally reactionary because they're encased in a petty dank little cave all their lives...both can be equally terrible to see.

good kids ought to be rebellious and contradictory though, it's part of growing up. They ought to equally also know that good parents are to be deferred to, as it's the fucking pay-off of being a great parent in the first place.
