These photos I took have been reduced in resolution a lot for web. This first one is M42, The Great Orion Nebula, in Orion's belt. Baby stars are hatching in there. This is the best shot I've gotten of it. You can see it with the naked eye.

This is a double cluster of stars in Perseus. Magnificent even in a small scope. This is about a 5-minute exposure through a 35mm camera with a 200mm telephoto riding piggyback on a telescope with a clock drive.

This is the summer Milky Way - a beautiful sight! I've labeled some of the points of interest. The Andromeda galaxy can easily be seen with the naked eye.

This is M31. The Andromeda galaxy. All the stars you see there are as drops on your windshield. The galaxy you see is like faraway mountains - it's 2.2 million light years away. Note the spiral action.

...this series definitely is more down-to-earth as Strat(osphere)'s opening stanza...these pics belong to Simon Larbalestier, one of the more interesting photographers around and certainly not unknown to Pixies-fans amongst us.
