Fernidando Fernandez Franco-Furter--heard a few songs...Strokes-lite How can anything be Strokes-lite? That's impossible. I dislike the Strokes, but love FF - this Strokes comparison is lazy, and based solely on the first 30 seconds of "Take Me Out". Dwazee - yeah, I read pitchfork's review of Razorlight. It's the only negative one I've found, and seems to be solely motivated by the fact that NME love 'em. It also lambasts them mainly for being derivative (this from a website that sucks off Interpol any chance it gets!). Well Christ, everything wears its influences these days. The question should not be "Are this band strikingly original?" but "Are this band any bloody good?" Otherwise bands like The Strokes and Nirvana (Pixies-lite) would never have got a decent review in their life. I also notice a lot of English bands getting (at best) lukewarm reviews these days because of a reaction against the British music press. And perhaps because the USA haven't come up with anything decent since, erm... The Pixies that hasn't mined either British soil, the Pixies themselves, or the tired old conventions of alt. country?

...........that being said: What's truly NEW and ORIGINAL out there? That's probably my biggest beef against a lot of the UK bands that rock journalists (the Japanese ones, at least) are salivating over. The "I've heard this before" kind of feeling. I mean, I love British music, and I'm sure that there's a great deal of music in UK that's original and exciting - I just wish the media here would report them, instead of fawning over stuff like the Libertines or the Coral.

Other bands who have a style musically their own The Walkmen(nothing like the Strokes, who's been saying that) Junior Boys(best electronic music this year) Raveonettes Ash(is there a better guitar driven band out there?) 10 bands I can't tolerate 1.Hoobascant 2.Puddle of Crudd 3.The new Creed spinoff 4.Good Charoltte(why Mtv why) 5.Trapt(DIE) 6.Seether 7.STP(sorry) 8.Collective Soul(if you live in Atl your with me on this one) 9.Live 10.3 days Grace/Story of the Year any bland rap/metal scream outfit Franz Ferdinand-The album is deck, their live show is super-fantastic next! The Killers-not the greatest live show, but their album is one of the standouts of the year I listen to it nearly almost every day Interpol-THE best NY band next! Libertines-I wasn't blown away by "Up the Bracket" certain songs were real gems like "Death on The Stairs" however "Can't Stand Me now is one of my fav. songs right now and I'll more than likely get a free copy on Mon. I'll let you know (Jesus ) Oct 21 with Radio 4 ;D Razorlight-No Us release date so I'll hold judgement till I hear the whole album instead of the 4 tracks I 've enjoyed Good Call Luke on "Welcome to the MonkeyHouse" the girls just love it they would dance on the bar to it much like Duran

ive subscribed to q mag for a couple of years now, and ive always kept up with british press for music--ever since i went to england, ive found much of what is written about tends to be stuff i generally like (until the press decides its too popular or some bullshit and then fawns over oasis). now that all those bands are getting popular, its just..eh. like, i have tix to see franz but no one wants to go because 'they're too popular'. bullshit. while all these bands may put out great music, transplanting them over here into mainstream music is just...distasteful.
i usually am cautious with indie reviews if only because there's a lot of holier-than-thou shit (like pitchfork hated muse). british press has a tendency to find the 'next big thing', hype them incessantly, and then on the next album not be bothered to care. but generally, i find more music stuff through them than through, oh, say, american press.

"I guess you have a point Proud, but it's just a joke."
true. but i still don't like it.
"I do kind of wish they used a more subtle way to get kids to stop listening to mindless drivel and find real music though."
if they're happy with that music, then i don't care, really... don't see why i should. their right to listen to whatever they want. and once again i'll stand up (probably to get kicked in the face again) and say that i think staind has a decent record, however repetitive it may be. though some spots are a bit overdone (do i really want a 20-something year old man yelling the lyrics "NEED ATTENTIONNN" about his childhood?).
"I dislike the Strokes, but love FF - this Strokes comparison is lazy, and based solely on the first 30 seconds of "Take Me Out"."
it's the vocal technique, pretty much. i'll say this, though... I like The Strokes a lot and don't care too much for FF one way or another (though i still like the single and a couple other tracks). just an opinion thing, both bands are decent in their own ways. i guess i'm just bored of old-fashioned rock and roll. maybe i'm sick of guitars. i could use something bluesy. or jazzy. or classical. or a jazz/blue/classical hybrid...
"3.The new Creed spinoff"
a lot of people like them, and i can't figure out why. their song makes me want to fall asleep.
"7.STP(sorry)"
after hearing them so many times on the radio, i just can't get myself to listen to the records. they've been so overplayed that there's no joke about it.
"9.Live"
throwing copper's good. the rest of the stuff i've heard makes me want to jump out of the nearest window (an open one, anyway... otherwise, that'd hurt). amazing how a band could go from being so good to so dreadful. "selling the drama" rules.

I didn't notice STP on that list at first. I was about to use them on my "List Of Recent Great American Bands Who Weren't Derivative of the Pixies, Who Didn't Mine Any Immediate British Soil, Who Aren't Alt-Country, And Who Are Probably Better Than Anything British To Come Out Since The Mid-80s List," but I suppose I'll lay off...
The Walkmen bore me to tears. I bought the album because I loved "The Rat" so much, but that song seems to be so exciting and energetic on such an unexciting and dull album. I really tried to like it (I hate wasting money) but it just didn't come to be.
TV on the Radio, though, I like quite a bit.
That Alter Bridge song made me laugh when I first heard it. I'd just heard or read somewhere not long before about that Tremonti dude saying, "It's not gonna sound like Creed with a new singer. It's gonna be a lot more over the top and flashy."
But then, sure enough, first time I hear that Alter Bridge song, I'm all, "Agh! Is this Creed!?" Somehow, those assholes found a guy who sounds just like Scott Stapp, and they pretty much just made another Creed record.
I'd also like to throw a bone in Incubus' defense here...everything in recent years has been utterly wretched, and they are indeed even worse than Hoobastank now. But SCIENCE and Fungus Amongus remain pure gold.

I don't think I've even heard Alter Bridge. I should probably consider myself lucky.

i never listen to radio anymore, so i guess i consider myself blessed to not know all those stupid hardcore bands now. everytime the radio does play in someone else's car, i just want to jump out the window. radio is friggin awful.
would pearl jam fall under 'bands without english influence'? ive been on a real pj kick of late. esp earlier stuff, like vs, ten, and vitalogy. just makes me happy.
the new pj harvey is growing on me alot. its not an urgent, important album--and i guess there lies the disappointment. but as far as it goes, its v good. i love slow drug, the letter, you came through, pocket knife....shame...and life of mr badmouth. its a totally different aesthetic for her, it seems, but i like it. i guess falling in love with this mess we're in helped...

my "List Of Recent Great American Bands Who Weren't Derivative of the Pixies, Who Didn't Mine Any Immediate British Soil, Who Aren't Alt-Country, And Who Are Probably Better Than Anything British To Come Out Since The Mid-80s List," I'd love to hear this list, and it's entirely possible you could do it convincingly now that I think about it. I'll give you the Pumpkins since we both love 'em. But mate, you'd better not be including NIN in this unless you're still under 25 years old. I can't believe how quickly and how badly that industrial-angst stuff aged. Thinking more about FF and The Killers, they're just perfectly crafted pop acts, and I guess they won't be troubling any halls of fame in years to come. I'm still convinced that in 25 years time Interpol will be spoken about in the same reverence that Joy Division attract nowadays. Especially if Paul Banks tops himself. On the subject of originality, I think the real problem a lot of people have with the current crop of emerging acts is that they're not influenced by the 'right' people. You know, we've had rock bands influenced by the greats of the 60's and 70's, by more contemporary dance music, and especially by country, blues and Americana and no-one kept banging on about originality at all. But it's become a huge issue lately because suddenly we have a crop of bands influenced by British music 1978-1985 (Joy Division, Cure, Duran, Smiths, later Clash) and it's not good enough, because that stuff doesn't chime with the snob set. Hence the jibes in middle-aged mags like Q, RS and Mojo about being derivative.

So just so you all don't worry. I'll be gone til Sunday to a big music thingy for the weekend, lots of turntables and jazz, and shit like that, some rock too. My absence will only fan the love ladies. Damnit, it's Sunday already and I only just found this. I don't feel like I got the benefit... I agree with what Jllm just said there. It seems that if a band isn't influenced by the Velvet Underground, then they're not worth consideration. I guess it must grate that the Strokes is the best thing to come out of the States in regards to modern pop rock and they're absolute dull shite. I'll let the Killers and Interpol off, but the current crop of Brit bands piss all over anything to come out stateside for some time. Long live Fatbob!

If every band had to be influenced by VU, man, what a dull world we'd be living in. I love to hear the variety in rock- from your full-on Stooges all the way to your swampadelic rockabilly 'n roll of The Cramps. Velvet who?
I for one would also hate to do without bands like Kraftwerk, Buena Vista Social Club, Dead Can Dance, Hedningarna, Sigur Ros et all, bands who are unique in their own sense. The Thousand Island Dressing on your salad, as it were.
I think we just have to resign to the fact that it's all about the cows who rechew the cud the best.

I listened to Razorlight again at the record store today. I'm sorry, but I really, really cannot understand how anyone who has been a serious music fan for any number of years can think that their music is even remotely exciting. They're insanely derivative. I mean, I do think that originality is overrated, but I think that any band should at least have some semblance or originality.
You know what their fans in Japan are gonna be like? It's the same kind of people that listen to the Libertines, the Ordinary Boyz, Franz Ferdinand and that ilk - the kind of people who think they're musically hip because they religiously read shit magazines like Snoozer and Buzz and will give blind appreciation to any act that those critics declare to be the next big thing. In other words, they have the same idiosyncracies as the people who listen to anything that mainstream culture will throw at them, although they most likely will never admit that.
Oh, did I mention that I think rock critics are shit? They're good for one thing and one thing only - evaluating past music, because they have the power of hindsight and knowledge. But as far as current music goes, I think they're totally clueless and I have no idea why anyone would even care about their opinions.
As for UK music, bleh. Being neither American nor British, I think I'm less biased than luke or jllm, and I think that the current crop of bands that supposed to be the Next Big Thing Out Of The UK is shit. Like I said before, I'm pretty sure that there's a great deal of fabulous music in Great Britain; it's just that none of them have made their way here (probably because of the tendency of the Japanese press to not think for themselves as far as overseas music is concerned, and to swallow anything that the fucking NME dishes out), and none of you are mentioning them. Thank God that there are still phenomenal British bands like Radiohead and the Delgados to prevent my opinion of UK music from sinking to an abysmal level.

But I like Mando Diao though, so who am I to criticize a band for being derivative? But anyway, please put me in the "people who think that Razorlight are stunningly boring" camp.
