NP: Dire Straits, Majestic Theatre, San Antonio, USA, August 16th, 1985
Soundboard
CD 1
1. Ride across the river 2. Expresso love 3. One world 4. Romeo and Juliet 5. Private investigations 6. Sultans of swing 7. Why worry 8. Walk of life
CD 2
1. Two young lovers 2. Money for nothing 3. Wild west end 4. Intro Tunnel of love 5. Tunnel of love 6. Brothers in arms 7. Solid rock 8. Going home
"Amazing soundboard recording! Taken from the bootleg "Secrets in the closet". This is the real San Antonio, 16th August 1985, it's not another Houston. At the beginning of Walk of life, it is Mark Knopfler himself who is revealing the mystery: "This is where San Antonio is doing the walk, alright." And, at the end of Brothers in arms Mark says: "Thank you San Antonio, thank you!". Amazing! Great sound, complete show!"
Part 1 Part 2fantastic show here, perfectly recorded in a not-too-large venue it sounds like. and knopfler just unspools bar upon bar of guitar solos, perfectly, in his inimitable style. i also added my fave, telegraph road from a BBC show from 1992 to fill out disc 2...knopfler's playing IS a wonder to behold. Two questions: where's the damn link AND can "Money For Nothing" be edited out easily?

Went to pick up the new Danger Mouse just released today and at the cash register decided to ask the guy to toss in the latest FLEET FOXES. I haven't gotten to the Danger Mouse yet and this puppy is on its 3 rd play-thru! It's just about THAT good to my ears right now....about the soothing thing that I needed without putting me to sleep. First point to get out of the way: yes, singer Robin Pecknold's voice continues to bring early My Morning Jacket to mind in an instant but by the second or third tune, it's all out of mind and you're taken in by a band that has foundations in that band, CSN, Zeppelin III, BUT has its own glorious stroke going on that ends up centering them in the present tense. The harmonies, the basic and mostly "wooden" music sound has numerous heroes in the past --- count this band in to be remembered in the future! "Easy-listening" is seldom as finely textured as this....from lyric to the adept insturmental execution of it all.

i don't know, the first one i couldn't make myself sit through the entire disc, though several of the songs were very nice...it was like there was a bit too much sugar-coating for me. the latest, WXRT's been playing a few songs which immediately make me wonder 'who IS this?'
NP: WDRV-FM (gotta see if i can win some tull tix here) acdc - dirty deeds el&p - lucky man talking heads - take me to the ribber

I was about the same way with the Fleet Foxes debut...fairly lukewarm to what I'd heard and never bothered to pick it up. That new one though,,,,,,yeah, I think it may be one of my latest best buys! And speaking of best buys, the library had another one of their quarterly used book sales and as usual I queued up Friday night for their special "members only" sneak preview....always head straight for the CDs and was the first to get to that table. Some here might be considered moldy oldies but I picked up over 20 discs which I think is a record for me: plus, SIX various volumes of the Nuggets collections!!! Some of this like the Neil Diamond, Thorogood, The Who are just for my own library needs and will probably get immediate play...but what killed me was that just in the few days prior I had looked at getting the Stewart, and the Mac, and the great Paul Butterfield collection. That Parliment box was really blowing my mind too this afternoon....man, that George Clinton nears some Zappa territory with the complex mixing of shit he throws at the wall! Anyhow,,,,I'm set for a while.....

nice haul! that faces set, that's like a 5 disc of all live cuts, isn't it? oh THAT one IS great.
that and the bbc peter green, definitely...
i spent time today downloading a smokin' band called Syrius...early 1970s prog jazz rockers from hungary. i caught the first one, listened to it and was blown away, and saw how many others i could find. imagine a jazzy manic depression if you can. or 'hey joe'...like nothing i've heard before.

Don...if you like that Nuggets stuff you should track down a copy of the 5-disc "Pebbles Trash Box". A compendium of the...uh, I hate to say it..."less talented" psychedelic garage bands of the 60s. As for what I'm listening to...Rock 103 FM on my TuneIn Radio iPhone app. If you're sportin' an iPhone I can't reccomend the TuneIn radio highly enough, and as for Rock 103...They play late 60s, all 70s and early 80s, which pretty much encapsulates the formative years in the evolution of my musical taste. A lot of obscure stuff as well, not just the obvious. But you can check them out yourself on your PC: [url=Don...if you like that Nuggets stuff you should track down a copy of the 5-disc "Pebbles Trash Box". Origin Of Symmetry - Muse I've always considered Muse to be "high-octane Radiohead." I can think of no better description. But I should add: VERY high octane. In fact, one of the most intense bands I've ever heard. This album took the longest time to resonate for me. It didn't hit me at first listen like my favorite, Absolution. My other favorite 3-piece bands: The Police and Rush, unless I'm forgetting someone. But Muse is THE 3-piece band of all time for me.

Other than one track on the v.1 'back deck set' that you sent me, Muse hasn't clicked for me at all. Like they're one of those bands I want to like, but something doesn't hit me like it probably should.... JAC, that Pebbles sounds interesting as I like the Nuggets set more for the songs I DON'T know. Glenn/Wayved sent me a teaser a few years ago and I'm still only a couple discs in of the 1/2 dozen that I bought. At the sale there was a least 15 other discs that covered various "rare" punk bands and the like....probably would have loved some of those but I was already weighed down as it was! (can't recall the name of that series...) DOC, the FACES 'best' is just a single disc but I know of the box set that you're speaking of I think,,,,didn't realize it was all live cuts. I did mine up several double-disc sets: the Fleetwood Mac, the Parliment, the Diamond, the Paul Butterfield ( smokin'!) and the GRP is actually 3CDs. Speaking of double-discs, I just got this in the mail for under $8 (ordered pre-library haul): THIS is pure summer listening music for me and don't know why I hadn't upgraded my 8track of it until now... esp with that 2nd disc which gives you about half of the debut in live form.

that faces box is a 4 disc, all live cuts and my library system had it, so i've got it in cda quality as opposed to some shitty bitrate i'd download...NOT that the live early 70's recordings demand crystal clarity though. most of the performances are great though. in the league of springsteen's incredible 4 live disc box of several years back. it's called 'so 5 guys walk into a bar...' - perfect for that era of the faces. geez, am i ever due to send you something too... re the GREAT dire straits set - sorry that it took me...from my favorite site: h**p://www.guitars101.com/forums/f90/dire-straits-secrets-in-the-closet-san-antonio-85-a-84762.html re pretenders II - i saw you put this one up at FB and much as i loved honeyman-scott's wild riffing-slashing style, i'll side with brother glenn that learning to crawl is my every-single-song favorite pretenders disc. and seeing them BURN through the performance at live aid, especially 'middle of the road' watching it happen LIVE on mtv on a hot saturday afternoon is one indelible rock and roll memory for me. just thinking about the countoff '1......2.....3.....4...' still gives me the chills. re muse...very 'meh' for me from the start. decent enough guitarwork, but (yeah i've said it prob a million time) bellamy's jet-shrieking inhales before a verse, drive me nuts. yeah, he's NOT the only vocalist who does that, but for some reason, he's fingernails on the chalkboard to me. ~ NP: THIS is one incredible find for me. her voice veers from a macy gray kitten growl, then soars like aretha or cyndi lauper with the purest tone. she surrounds herself with the most complementary musicians (likely norwegian since she's there) who're putting out the most soulful jazzy accompaniment to her very tasteful songs. she was part of a group called dadafon, who's discs i'm seeking out (1 so far) but these solo discs are every bit the works of genius i'd hoped. she did the backing to the bukowski bio-flick 'factotum' which is the one i've not heard yet (but with great reviews on amazon) and there's a mind-blowing disc of spirituals/gospel ('wayfaring stranger') which i didn't anywhere near expect anything that fantastic, given that i'm not much for that style of music. my highest praise for kristin asbjornsen, absolutely. ('yeah, easy for YOU to say...')

NP: damn! i continue to go scandinavian. great band, great album even if, as i just read over on amazooon, they just lost one of their longtime guitarists. whoever it is that's left, he's got such a great tone and a solid vibrato that reminds me VERY much of the great michael schenker, one of my all-time favorites. a nice constancy of 'product', like other bands like opeth, porcupine tree, where you KNOW the music you're putting on is going to be of very high quality

i have had a place in my heart for this sort of 'progressive bluegrass' (prog-grass?) for 30 years since hearing the david grisman quintet's 'quintet '76' album...after all the metal i listen to and which i still love to hell, getting this sort of music that INSISTS you simply 'breeeathe, enjoy' in such an organic and natural manner, that is just such pleasure.
of course with players this talented, they also intermittently WILL take your breath away because what they've just played is amazing...and such sophisticated ways for, well, just plain old cornpone 'hillbilly music'.
for JUST one, jerry douglas simply NEVER disappoints.
