back at the office earlier today - i'm loving the cool confines of my house at the mo - but i had a SERIOUS blues thing goin' on starting with the incredible:
Michael Burks July 3 1998 Mississippi Valley Blues Festival FM >?>trade cdr>wav(eac secure)>flac>dime
01. Why You So Mean To Me 02. Little Did I Know 03. Don't Lie To Me 04. Cadillac Assembly Line 05. The Sky Is Crying 06. Look On Yonder Wall 07. Can You Feel It 08. Talk To My Baby Encore: 09. Everyday I Have The Blues
the sound here is phenomenal, again, even as a 40kbps wma file thumping crystal clear, with burks playing oover the top, just cutting through everything like a crosscut saw - don, YOU in particular have got to have this. i've got a latter day show of his where he's simply not as on fire as this - which i KNEW he was capable of because i did see him on one of the side stages back at the chgo bluesfest years back, possibly even as far back as this, 1998. EZ, super ez download here: h**p://tela.sugarmegs.org/alpha/m.html
NEXT up was this sl more prog-blues from the esteemed:
Robben Ford Trio - Catalina's Bar & Grill, Los Angeles, 29 March 2012
1. Lovin Cup 2. Unknown 3. Earthquake 4. Unknown 5. Moonchild 6. Cannonball Shuffle 7. Nothin to Nobody 8. There Will Be Another You 9. Who Do You Think You Are 10. Spoonful 11. Instrumental 12. Riley B King 13. Too Much 14. Unknown 15. Spoonful (Reprise) 16. Chevrolet
scorched my brain...oh wait - THAT was the heatwave outside.

oh and btw, i didn't read the bardens wiki entries far enough to see that p green was guesting there - i figured it WAS bardens, but with an unmistakeable influence.
by now, i know both of us have developed a pretty good ear for the characteristics of a LOT of players.
the 200-level jazz & blues classes i took at U of Ill had a final where we had like 12 trumpeters from the 20s-30s-40s we had to differentiate for and audio portion - it taught us what to listen for...great class. but with guitar. this is strictly for the love for those players - those bastiches been gettin' me OFF for years!
~
matt, my first listens to lissie made me track down as much of hers online as i could - i dug the shit out of her. gotta dig her stuff out again.
lumineers are pretty damned impressive too!
i don't know how much of the 'six degrees of separation' for the punch brothers you explored but there's nothing but great music surrounding everything each of those guys has done.
chris thile in particular (esp nickelcreek) but all of those guys are ridiculous players.
suggestion: try the sparrow quartet for something similarly 'organic' without being completely bluegrass oriented...LOVE what they do.

Ok, this album is digging it's myriad clawed tentacles deep into my soul. Unbelievable how this process happens. It's akin to the wind scouring away tons of sand obscuring a buried treasure chest. The first several listens blows the sand particles all over the place, entrancing you with the swirling dust dervishes and patterns of sandgrains blasting away. Then, after several more listens....the sand has almost entirely been removed from this sunken alien artifact, and the listener is now riveted by the strange architecture thus revealed. After another listen, certain songs begin opening up--i.e, the artifact reveals itself to be a compartment, which suddenly opens up to blast forth an extraterrestrial light. The experienced Noctourniquet listener is no longer attracted by the wind or sand--he or she will be entranced by the glowing warmth of the alien yet familiar glow of the music. And then the strangest thing happens. That is the moment when the truth is revealed: these songs are in fact, quite ordinarily fashioned. There's the bassline, pretty groovin'. The drum beats also seem rather normal, but good in the bracing, skeletal manner which by all means they should be. Omar's guitar sketches and riffs are also laid bare with multiple listenings, and paradoxically reveal themselves to be simultaneously classic and strange, it's hard to explain...(I'm not rambling, here)...but in a nutshell, it's like this: First time hearing Noctourniquet--all I could think was "how strange and unaccessible." But after hearing it half a dozen times....it's more like, "How classically perfect." It just took time (for me) to get there, I guess. This album is continually growing on me, here is one of my favorite songs off it: lyrics if I trust in the wind she will pave me a different road I will try and start over but I think I must choose someone else I am pulled from the pages where the letters lack the pigment of trust
must be on my way, I've got to get home won't be back someday, so let it unfold
I've abandoned the outcome in search of the rest I deserve you can do what you will with my body but I won't ring the bell I've omitted the chapters that bow and admit defeat
must be on my way, I've got to get home won't be back someday, so let it unfold
I am a mountain of cavernous people searching for a lighthouse in the fog
of the flowers that grew from the cracks in the ground you paved didn't you think he would warn me through the thorns of my waking dreams when the riddles connected the dots of this constellation
must be on my way, I've got to get home won't be back someday, so let it unfold
I am a mountain of cavernous people searching for a lighthouse in the fog
I found a reason to leave you with this load all I can do is forgive your broken heart trapped in this tower made of amber for too long all I can do is forgive your broken heartAll rights reserved to The Mars Volta.

gotta get me some of that^... ~ NP: This debut album was recorded in October 91 by Bill Laswell and the Knitting Factory in NY, but was only released for the opening of festivities of 93's Antwerp, European Cultural Capital that lasted a whole year. Apparently the Flemish regional government funded the project. Being mostly Peter Vermeersch and Pierre Vervloesem's group, the septet has an incredible sound, being mostly inspired by Zappa (and Beefheart), but clearly these guys listened to a wide array of music and the prog groups also. The inside group photo does show a girl named sally sitting cross-legged, you will never know if it was a spoof or not. With its slow-beat but eccentric jazz opener the uninitiated proghead might just take the advice from the track title and push the FFWD, but this would be a serious mistake. Zippo Raid is a much more energetic track while the aptly-titled XLS - their eponymous track supposed to define them - raised the standards to such heights that Miriodor or Alamaailman Vasarat better be holding on to their seats, if they do not want to be taken by a storm. Among the other highlights are Blackhead BB with its sax orgies (were VDGG's Jackson was obviously an influence) underlined by Vervloesem's Zappa-esque guitars, Bacon & Eggs and Turkish Bath. In a much harder and funky way (in a Red Hot Chilly Peppers sense) Little hearts and Lacto B rock your heart out with a real virtuosity but staying away from the demonstration. A stunning debut album (well the group members were no rookies, Plouvier hammering the keys since the early 80's), and the first of series of impressive records. X-L S is one of the seminal bands of Belgium's 90's scenes, and a must-hear-to-believe-it. :::Review by Sean Trane:::
