I've ran through the new Wilco record once, really enjoyed it. Very solid with a few flashes of pure brilliance as of now. The other great thing about this is the access to the stream of their live show from a few weeks back which I'm checking out now just because I must hear "via chicago" live.

Welcome back from Cancun, bowiglou!! It sounds like you had a fabulous honeymoon! Be forewarned, though, your grace period during which I graciously tolerate bowiglouisms without pointing them out is rapidly nearing its end... come july 1st, I'm back with a vengeance!! I can't really think of much of anything of interest to say right now, except to mention that after a long conversation with my mom about sad songs, I played Where the Wild Roses Grow for her and she thought it was absolutely beautiful. Nothing beats converting your mother to Nick Cave fandom!!! Cheers, M

Nothing like a little duende to make for some mother-daughter bonding, eh?

Mary, funny you mention that..just the other night I was thinking that 7/1 is coming up soon, and your restraint has been most admirable...you must have been busting at the seams when on the Tag title board I said "Motel Room in my Bed"!!!!.......................... Mary, I think I'm learning from you...10 minutes ago I clumsily dropped a bag of starbursts (AKA: God's Nectar) on the kitchen floor, rapidly came up, and totally and completely made forehead contact with the cabinet above..I am now just starting to feel the start of what will be a very healthy headache...f**k!!!!

Bow, welcome back! Sorry to hear about your little encounter while swimming, but glad that your honeymoon was otherwise superb. OK, so I've burned a lot of CDs and made a lot of mixed tapes in my day, but it looks like I'm finally going to have the ultimate challenge: Steve and I have decided to do CDs as wedding favours. So instead of tailoring music to one recipient, we're now going to be trying to please about 125. Impossible? Probably. But I'm sure as hell looking forward to trying!

That's fucking awesome. I do that with birthdays a lot of the time. Special mixed CDs for people. Makes a way better gift than something impersonal and store-bought. Of course, my favourite gift of all time is money, so ...

I agree burning a disc of music for people is good, unless they like Matchbox 20 or Dave Matthews or something. At least I know what to get ekul.

ONLY Bow could figure out a way to smack his forehead on a cabinet above the BACK of his head after picking something up off the floor....
....hmmmm....
Waitwait! I've got it now! He needed a challenge, so yoga-boy picked up those Starbursts Limbo-style!!!!

LOL, yeah really. Poor eckel will never live that one down, no matter how much he tries to explain this Dave Matthews was different. If someone has horrendous taste, I just make them an easily-digestable, ear-friendly mix of good stuff they've never heard before. I am the missionary of Music, throwing the bread of Radiohead and Modest Mouse to the masses who feed on Nickelback's soda pop.

bow - I would like to second tunes in welcoming you back, and I'm sorry to hear about your encounter while swimming.
re: mix tapes/cds
I love making mixes for other people, but I can rarely make a good mix for myself. There are a few exceptions but only a handful.
As handy as the whole CD format is, I miss mix tapes though. There was something about having the freedom of two completely different sides to manipulate. I usually ended up having "happy/fast" side and a "sad/slow" side. Now, I have to blend everything together which can be a bitch.

I so agree with ueb about the value of having 2 sides per tape - that really does allow you to do some cool things, like when I made my "black and blue" tape where one side of the tape was all songs with the word "black" in the title and the other side was all songs with the word "blue" in the title.... and, perfectly, the last song on the first side was Blue Tears by the Black Heart Procession... granted, I'm still basically in those antiquated days of mix tapes, since I still don't own a cd burner. But the jorunal I work for is about to purchase one for our office, so I'm thinking there may be some serious exploiting of journal property for personal use in the near future....! but damn, I wish my friends were as cool as tunes and gave me mix CDs on their weddings!! Shit, what a great idea. Though the last wedding I attended was pretty cool musically, as the bride walked down the alley to Tom Waits and their first dance song was Johnny Cash's rendition of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, which seemed really really perfect... Cheers, M

We still make mix tapes on occasion, but really only for road trips, since Steve doesn't have a CD player in his car (it is 11 years old, after all.) I never really did the sad side/happy side though - usually I would just make an entire tape of tortuously sad music or one mostly upbeat. I do love the sound of that black and blue tape that Mary made though. I'm glad you guys like the idea of a wedding CD - of course, it'd be a lot easier if I just invited all of you to my wedding, given your exquisite musical tastes! As it is, we'll have to try and somehow please people who like Shania Twain and Celine Dion, while staying as far away from Shania Twain and Celine Dion as is humanly possible. The only song that we KNOW will be on there right now is Joe Strummer's 'Silver and Gold' - we're using it as the last song of the night.
