Reading the various posts here in regards to Jim Morrison, I'm just thinking one thing- sometimes we learn too much about someone and it taints the perception of the music/lyrics they make...
I'm reminded of that whilst listening to music by The Church and listening to the far from easy conceptualistic lyrics Steve Kilbey writes. Now I can see the poetry in them but I can also see how people dismiss them as psychobabble or crackpot lyricism. the fact though is that I don't know enough about Steve Kilbey to form an opinion as to why he writes what he does. Would it have made a difference if I had learned he was a down-and-out junk or an alcoholic who hits his wife? I think I would; it'd be easier to dismiss some of his more kaleidoscopical wordsmithery into dumb rambling rather than the sheer genius of a underestimated poet.
With Morrison, I've read my share of biographical articles in Q, MOJO and Rolling Stone. He is fascinating for sure but erratic to say the least. I just don't relate to him- I find his violent bouts with the law childish and his desire to be an 'erotic politician' as he named himself, laughable. His lyricism might go on the same transcendental plane as Kilbey's but I feel that a lot of it is traced back to his stoushes with alcohol and drugs. His poetry is rambling in my mind. Again, this is just my perception.
The music of the Doors was something different- I certainly don't dislike the quality of it. Loved the organ-sounds and Krieger was a pretty good guitarist. The early lyrics of Morrison are very fitting. 'Don't you love her madly?' There's an effortless cool about them. But as years progress, the weirdness takes over. For me Morrison tried to attach a certain magic to the band but it sort of led me to be more estranged from it. For instance, I love 'Riders On The Storm' but the lyric is just plain naff. I have that feeling with many more tracks. I read some of his poetry and I'm not enamoured by it like I had when reading Wordsworth, Tennyson or Marsman. But still I don't mind to hear the odd Doors-track on AOR-radio or on the jukebox....

very awesome writeup, Maarts. (hey, how do you pronounce that, by the way?)
i think the best phase of the Doors was 1966 to 1967, from their lean and hungry pre-hit single, pre-record contract days to about Strange Days. After that, it was all parody.

Maarts? It's short of Maarten, which is my given name. Maarts is pronounced like you read it, with a long ah-sound.
(i can't believe that this is post 66666 on these boards!)

(i can't believe that this is post 66666 on these boards!) that makes you 1.66667 (nonterminating decimal) of satan!!!!.......... and great comments on Kilbey vs. Morrison...Kilbey's lyrics indeed can be a bit on the oblique side, bordering on the impenetrable.......though at times I think he is trying to just find a rhyme (song on Heyday "triestte' had a horrible rhyme with 'parachute' that makes no f*&kin sense!!!)...............but that being said, you're absolutely right that there was no mystery about Moorison's stance/facade..it was all there in black and white.....................

Oh so seriously?
The band without the Blue Bus and the circus organ.

Oh, Velvet Schmelvet. I dig em, OK. I just don't give them the patronage that they get from the other posters around here.

Seriously, it's not even close. This is almost like comparing the Beatles to the Dave Clark 5. Seriously.

Yeah we need to not even make this a discussion it's so absurd. I'm not even much of a Velvets fan, and downgrading them into Doors territory is wrong on so many levels.

Bowiglou, you are one of the only Doors fans here, and yet i find it ironic that your message board handle is composed of the names Bowie, Iggy, and Lou.
