There's a good amount of funk on this record, and not "Can't Stop" type funk, but real honest to god balls out funk. I like it. Still haven't decided where it ranks, but this album is way better than I expected it to be.

I've only listen to the whole album twice so far but I like it It's not as strong as By The Way I rather like the Mars disc better so far But JF is stealing this record/The Mars Volta influence is VERY apparant Looking foward to the 2 touring together(what do you think Thorn RHCP/Mars Volta?) OCT 26- Gwinnet GA I think it's a definite grower and expect to really embrace it though

Peppers are on for VooDoo, so I guess I'll be seeing them around Halloween. And fucking Duran Duran, hell yeah. I really don't even care who else plays.
Completely agree about the Mars Volta influence, I meant to mention that before.

There's a Mar Volta influence to this Peppers disc? Honestly? I think I can believe you guys on this.
Hoo-hah!
Then maybe they're turning a corner and washing out the very sour taste that that poppy Californication-mess left in my mouth...I mean, there's ZERO of any sort of a Mars Volta influence on that disc. To my mind this = massively improved RCHP. It's about time.

The MV influence is in JF's guitar playing not so much the overall arragments but yeah I can hear it. He's all over the place, some of his best work yet...almost makes up for some of the songs not being very good.

Yeah, this is definitely his album. I'd go so far as to say that the Mars Volta may have touched Flea a little here, too.
But be warned, Doc, Kiedis sorta sucks here, and Rubin completely fucks Smith, as has been noted. But this is Frusciante at his prime.

I think the Mars Volta got Flea playing trumpet on record again. I guess he played on one song on By the Way, but there's a whole lot more trumpet this time around.

Kiedis isn't terrible on this one. But since the last two albums were big leaps forward for him vocally (and lyrically on the last one), it's definately a setback for him. But it doesn't matter. I think on this one he just sort of handed the reins over to JF and let him go nuts. It doesn't matter what the rest of the band does, because this album belongs to Frusciante, with some assistance from Flea.

Rubin is really good at doing one particular type of production. He's nailed that sound, and when the music calls for that sound, he does good work. He's completely incapable of doing anything else though, and I think there's where the backlash comes in. Sometimes he puts that same sound on records that shouldn't sound like that.

I do have a few negative comments to make too... "Strip My Mind" kinda sucks. If it weren't for John's solo it would totally suck. Two songs have the word "Hey" in their chorus, one of which is even called "Hey". I think this might even have a part in why people are quickly dismissing Kiedis' lyrics. They're really not much worse than they usually are. The sequencing of some songs is bad. "Desecration Smile" might be a beautiful little number, but it shouldn't be a disc opener. Track 2 "Tell Me Baby" would've been a better choice for opening Mars. The album cover is horrible. The packaging smells like crap. Not that I sniff it or anything, but I swear I can smell it whenever its close by. REM's "Monster" still takes the cake for the stinkiest CD package of all time though... "Death Of A Martian" is a dumb closer. The album should've ended with the previous track "Turn It Again" which ends with with JF just playing his heart out... It's his album, he should've had the last word on it.

Kool, I agree that the sequencing is...not great. AMG sort of says that it's a perfect album for just picking and choosing songs from (due to its length, but also its completely lack of a coherent flow to it). I think I agree with that. It's an album you can skip around on a bit and not feel like you're missing anything, but every song is good enough to listen to from time to time.

Yeah, I never expected to dislike only one song out of 28! Everything else, like you said, is good enough to listen to. I thought at least 7-8 tracks would be totally skip-worthy, so I'm pleased with it so far. But because of it's length it'll probably take me a month or so for me to express my detailed opinion on the album and where it ranks with the previous ones. For now, all I can say is it sounds great and I keep hearing new things with every spin...
btw, anyone else notice the "I Wanna Be Your Dog"-like piano during "Storm In A Teacup's" last chorus? And that ending! Amazing!

The record is good and proves one thing for me: Kick Kiedis out of the band. Let John sing and do everything. Also, they need to get Albini or someone to turn the knobs on their next album because the drum production on Smith's drums is WEAK! It's so gated and compressed in that horrible 80s rock fashion that is just AWFUL! Also, I think they shouldn't have looked back so much on BSSM on this one and just gone for something entirely different. These guys obviously have good music taste and can play very well, so just do something totally different. My major complaint with this record as it's probably the safest one they have done yet.
I mean "Warm Tape" was totally different and GENIUS. Some of this stuff is just boring and yes, it most definitely has the worst record cover I have seen in years outside of that new Pearl Jam cover. I don't care how good the record is, that record cover sucks.
