Please feast your eyes upon 'Guitar Worlds' 100 Greatest Guitarists below. Do you see the horror yet? Do you see the travesty that has been committed by a so-called "guitar magazine", the editorial team of which probably still have posters of Ride the Lightning-era Metallica up on their bedroom walls?!
Besides the many many hideous errors in this list (Nigel fucking Tufnel at 23 anyone?!) and the somewhat deranged ranking (I am fan of Slayer, but King & Hanneman at 10? AT 10?! Ahead of Hendrix, Slash, Brian May, Kim Thayil, not to mention a dozen others?! WRONG! Thats like saying Britney Spears is hotter than Angelina Jolie, or that ham & pineapple pizza is better than the super supreme), what irks me most are the glaring omissions: George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Johnny Marr, Ry Cooder, Carlos Santana - just a few.
WHAT IS THIS MADNESS?! Did they pick these names from a hat? I suspect so, because thats the only friggin' way Tommy Iommi (for all his acknowledged greatness) gets to be #1 on most guitar lists.
NB - I realise lists are subjective and fluid, and I appreciate Guitar Worlds' undying devotion to metal & hair gods, but you can't list great players without the ones that universally accepted as being uber-fantastiche. This is why I object. And also, if Jllm gets to vent for Jeff Buckley's 'Hallelujah' taking #1 in our song list, then I get to whine about this. If you don't like it, you can go work for Guitar World, bitch.

Layla ~ Glad to see you Miss Gulliver ...
Relax !! It's a "Heavy Metal"(almost exclusively)list and the guys who put that one together are obviously too deaf now to really appreciate the virtuosity of the other guitarists you mentioned ...
P.S. Where are you and when will you treat us with some pics of yours truly ??

i'm sick as hell of jimi hendrix. his music's decent, but... i dunno, i'm not charmed by it. i listened to about two-thirds of are you experienced and turned it off. it's not bad stuff... in fact, it's entertaining. but... uh... well, i'm obviously missing something.
and yay for jerry cantrell.

This has to be somewhat of a goof list...Nigel Tufnel just above Jeff Beck?? uh-huh, right.....
Obviously leans towards those who were influencial in the Heavy Metal world, esp. with Iommi sitting on top of all. But hey, cool to see a few names recognized (John Christ needs another a second solo set out!).

Pete Townshend at #82?? No SRV?
Even if it's billed as heavy metal or speed or whatever, what about Ronnie Montrose, or maybe Roy Buchannon (for speed)? Glad to see they got Buck Dharma of BOC in there somewhere. Tony Iomi is great - no question, but #1?

I'll have to side with Proud on Hendrix... ok, so the guy could play, but nothing I've ever heard, beyond it's virtuosity and excellent playing, really impresses me a great deal.

crap list...but yeah it's full of guitarists whose bands adolescent schoolboys pop there zits to (and then theres Led Zep)...testosterone city..
honestly if I ever hear 20% of that list ever play again, I'll be the lesser for it.....(indie snob that I am!!)

Boy that sure IS a weird list! Because it's definitely a mixture of the old and the new...but the 'old' they've picked (like either Don or Strat-O said)are sorta like throwing a bone to the old dinosaurs of metal...like Neil Young. I mean c'mon he's had great moments, monster riffs...but as an 'accomplished' guitar player?
Glen Buxton and Michael Bruce are a wonderful old school choice for this list tho....fuck, those guys played some great shit! If just for the 'School's Out' opening riff...fantastic....does THAT one immediately get recalled in one's mind, or WHAT?
~
Layla, didja get over to the Catacombs yet?

At least half that list should be striken from there. Also Alexi Laiho should be much higher on the list than he is. The guys guitar playing is simply amazing and doesn't deserve to be anywhere below Kim Thayil(illll!!!!!!!).

Seeing Lamb of God on the list at all pisses me off. The band sucks so badly that I refused to watch them on the Fear Factory/COB tour.

Ok, for shits & giggles, I've taken a scalpel to the above list, and hacked off 70 guitarists. Cruel, maybe: but it had to be done.
*NOTE* I have tried to stay "true" to the above "Heavy Metal" spirit of the list, and to give the compilers the benefit of the doubt, I added *only one* guitarist previously not on their list. I just didn't feel like taking forever on this, which is mainly why I left most of their chosen "elite" from their own Top 100. Mainly I decided to take the Top 30, and re-arrange them in their proper Order of Greatness.
If I've taken out anyone's particularly favorite metal-maniac, don't take it personally. I simply wanted to offer an "improved" Top-30 list of Heavy Metal Guitarists.
Here it is:
