Wasn’t the joke that they never let him have any bullets? The ole Night Stalkers gone too. Damn that was a decent show unlike the recent remake.

Dang it -- McGavin too!?!? That show was one of my all time favorites -- think it was just recently put out on DVD too....
I had pics of both early on in the ICON Board -- real good one of McGavin holding up a cross during the first "Night Stalker" -- STILL one of the best vampire movies done.
So there's your 3 big old TV stars: McGavin, Knotts, & Al "Grampa" Lewis...

Yeah used to creep me out quite nicely in my younger days, that & Rod’s Twilight Zone. I also remember a show called Night Gallery that I faithfully watched though it gave me the willies. A little voice says Rod was some how involved with it too though I’m not 100% sure. I’ll check curious now.
He did host it. Premiered in 1970.

yeah "Night Gallery" had its share of creeps as well though it was more grounded in eerie, mysterious stories than some of the sci-fi bent that "The Twilight Zone" could head into. Remember how Serling would introduce each story by walking through the 'gallery' and stopping in front of a painting that linked to the episode. If those are bringing back memories I'm sure you'll recall too a film that stared Karen Black in 3 different stories, the last of which co-starred this charming little fella: ah...poor, poor Ms. Black.... yeah, the infamous "Trilogy Of Terror" from the mid-70's

I remember watching Night Gallery back when I was a kid ... loved any kind of horror/sci-fi/supernatural shows or movies.
I was really bummed to hear about Darren McGavin today. They just don't make actors, or men, like him any more.
I absolutely loved The Night Stalker, in fact, I remember bumping into it on cable a few years back and being surprised at how good some of the episodes were. That very first show -- the two hour made for TV movie of the same name about a modern Las Vegas vampire -- was indeed an excellent modern turn on vampire lore. One of the best vamp movies of the seventies, actually.
Oddly enough, I find that television often does a better job of dealing w/vampires in an intelligent fashion than films do. Guess that goes all the way back to when I was just 8 or 9 and seeing The Night Stalker for the first time.

I don't know McGavin from anything other than A Christmas Story, but that was one of my most-watched movies as a kid. I love that movie.

"This nut thinks he's a vampire!" Yeah, McGavin was great. "Bumpusses!"
I could say a lot about Don Knotts and the ol' Barney character. Man, that was great stuff. What a great character actor/comedian he was in that role. Human nature was so transparently expressed in him.

Now Dennis Weaver too. Looks like it's in 4's Ken.

Heaven knows how I ended up in Seattle when I'd started out for New York from Las Vegas. There I was, however, and I sought out the Seattle Press Club as a last resort, my resumes and clippings under my arm. At this point in my life I could barely afford a double scotch. I sat at the bar with a row of local reporters, feeling the outsider with a capital OUT. Believe it or not, I was reluctant to test the waters with any local 'paper. I didn't dive into conversation until I noticed a tall, thin young man studying me from a couple of stools down. The guy was in his mid-twenties, skinny but projecting an aura of strength -- wiry I guess you'd call it. He had an oval face and a strong Kirk Douglas chin, dark hair, and sky-blue eyes focused on some point near my elbow. I glanced down, lifting my arm and folio like a wing. A sketch artist's drawing of a gaunt, feral, barely-human face glared from a corner of a newspaper clipping. The young man grinned at me in embarrassment. "Sorry," he said, "but he looks interesting. Certainly more so than any mug they put in the Chronicle." My scotch sloshed around in my empty stomach. I wondered if this whelp had ever looked down on a twisted corpse in a multi-car wreck, or a swollen floater dragged from a river. "Interesting," I grumbled. "There's an understatement. It's only the greatest news story of the century, my friend. But nobody's heard of it." "Really?" asked the whelp. "Now you have me hooked. Who is this guy?" I swallowed the last of my scotch. "Janos Skorzeny," I muttered, wiping my lips with a little square napkin. The young reporter rose. "Nasty customer?" "The nastiest." "I'd like to hear about him," said my new friend. "Maybe over another drink? Mr. --?" "Kolchak. Carl Kolchak." We moved to a booth. Once lubricated with more alcohol, I started in about Las Vegas, the Skorzeny murders, the lid slammed down by the cops and the D.A., and my final realization: Janos Skorzeny was a genuine blood-sucking vampire. !!!!! GASP

That's fantastic, Rockkid. Where'd you find that anyway?
I loved that show ... may have to put it on my TiVo wish list ... in case Sci-Fi decides to run it again.
I just loved that hard-boiled character McGavin played so well. Great character actor.

Wasn’t the joke that they never let him have any bullets? No, Barney had one bullet that he kept in his pocket. He could only put it in his gun if danger (his middle name) was near.

But really, that original 2hr movie was the best....hell 'kid, I thought you were at first telling a personal story there! Thing is it brought right back how McGavin did all that narrative like that during the episodes. yeah: VERY well done character there!

Yeah, that original two hour show was (still is) one of my favorite vampire tales ever. Just perfectly done ... scared the hell out of me when I first saw it back in, what? '73?
I'm so glad I had parents cool enough to let me watch stuff like that ...
