Yup. Just as soon as you even start trying to "justify" the greatest force to ever hit rock music, you've already fallen off the bandwagon. . . There's simply no room for debate. Seriously though Melon . . . its painful to watch you come out and SAY that Zep is the greatest . . . its like watching someone haveta deliberately pronounce that breathing is their favorite pasttime . . . it just goes w/out saying

I'd wager that, w/out Zeppelin....
A LOT OF US WOULDN'T HAVE EVEN BEEN BORN.

I just happened to be pondering today how nobody on these boards speaks of or praises Led Zeppelin in the light that I praise Blind Melon or luke praises the Pumpkins, or JAC praises Sigur Ros, or JLLM praises Radiohead or Riley praises Rush, or pcook praises The Kinks. Why is that??? Lemme know who I missed here. I'd wager cuz it's a given. That was the first thought going through my head -- the band really doesn't NEED to be amped up. I'll take it another notch and venture that unless you were growing up and turning onto music in the 70's, you probably can't even fanthom the weight that Zeppelin carried. It's almost fashionable to bag on them these days but fuck what a groundwork they laid...and barely in more than the space of a decade.

I agree w/ a lot of what you all are saying about Zep, as far as laying down some serious ground work, and being so gargantuan during the 70's. IMPO though, they just aren't my favorite band, or even top 10. I would probably include them in my top 20 though.
Like I said a few post back, I really, really like LZ1 and LZ3, and Physical (less Kashmir); the rest I think are pretty good, but not great.

I've seen JAC and luke both talk of how Soundgarden buries Zeppelin. Makes my head spin, it does. Can't see it.
Anyhoo, how the hell did I forget about Mary's obsession with Nick Cave?

I honestly love Soundgarden and though they're not the landmark band that Zepp definitely were, Soundgarden simply improves on what Zeppelin did by easily a power of 2...if not 3 or 4 at times.
If Zeppelin was a tricked-out LearJet, then Soundgarden was an F-16...
What the hell is Kim Thayil doing anyway? Facking slacker bastard....best not be going all Layne Staley on us, by god!
What a player!

Yeah, that dude was #100 on Rolling Stone's Top 100 Guitarists list. Never heard any Soundgarden other than what played on the radio. I suppose I should pick up Superunknown soon. Or should I pick up Badmotorfinger first. Your suggestions:

I was simply floored by Louder Than Love which was the first of theirs that I heard...the impact was no less that the first time I heard Zepp's first....then I heard Badmotorfinger and Superunknown, 2nd and 3rd, as they came out...and BOTH of them were just leaps in ideas and technique than LTL...
I can't have a preference for either of those because they're both super-dense with great musical ideasand simply perfect rock moments like 'Spoonman'....makemewannago 'AAAAAARGHYEAH!!!'

I've always thought Louder Then Love was a pretty bad album...I love Badmotorfiinger though...Superunknown is bit meh in places but still pretty good.

Ditto choice for "Badmotorfinger"....I've heard "Superunknown" enough to last a while. I think one should hear the tune Loud Love -- GREAT sonics there IMO!

They were learning the ropes on Louder Than Love, but on sheer power alone...Loud Love and Ugly Truth....yeah.
But the refinement that came later produced the unreal Thayil solos on 'Like Suicide' or '4th Of July'...no 'meh' from me baby.

Or should I pick up Badmotorfinger first. Your suggestions: Badmotorfinger. For me, there are better songs on Superunknown, but the former is a bit more consistent. The second half of the latter can get a bit spotty....In other words, the songs I like on 'Super' I find to be better on anything on 'Badmoter', but 'Badmoter' is a more solid album overall.

I like Louder than Love, and I've come around to Superunknown over the years. Badmotorfinger is far and away my favorite, though, and If you're looking for the root of the Zeppelin comparisons, Badmotorfinger is the only place to start.
I agree that they weren't as "seminal" a band, but that just doesn't happen these days. With few exceptions, all that's really left to do is improve on the sounds of old. Just because some did it first, doesn't mean...
Of course, Melon, don't expect to hear Soundgarden and go, "WOW, what an impact, these guys blow away Zeppelin!" But try and look at it from the perspective of a 17 year-old in 1998 hearing Zeppelin for the first time, thinking, "Man, this sounds like a half-assed Soundgarden with shitty lyrics..."
Doc, last I heard of Thayil, he was doing some project with Jello Biafra and Krist Noviselic. Not sure what ever came of it, though, as I think Noviselic put a band together recently and Jello has been pumping them out pretty consistent with the Melvins. I wish he'd show up, though, that guy is a fucking guitar god. He needs to go slap some sense into Cornell and get him out of that shit band he's in.
