Yes, I admit I haven't heard the new Hank... or any Hank for that matter... and haven't gotten to the new Sonic Youth yet either. I just like being a wiseass!
Big Wave's the first purely fun song PJ's done in... well, ever. First few times I heard it I thought it was filler, but I suppose I was the one who needed to lighten up.
In some ways, I think the new PJ fulfills the promise some saw in Yield... it has some gorgeous songs (Parachutes, Come Back), its share of rockers (First four tracks), and a tad of experimentation (Inside Job, which gets my vote for best Pearl Jam closer to date) thrown in without coming off as pretentious or as something you're supposed to like regardless if it's actually any good. Although the band had some difficulty creating the album, you can tell that they loved playing together and making it when everything clicked. Bless J Records (not very often that somebody praises a major record label, eh?) for letting Pearl Jam be who they wanted to be... Pearl Jam, as the album's title more than adequately states.
I can't see any other mainstream band competing against them for king of this decade.
