Jim who? Van Morrison? Sure, you can vote for Van the Man all you want, once we get to the other side of the pond. And what was that band that got mentioned a while back, the Screen Doors? the Open Doors? Don't think they're eligible for this poll. Rocky has my schtick about Jimbo down so well by now that I don't have anything further to add ... other than to mention a few more guys who did it better than the Lizard King ... Julian Cope, Ian McCulloch (Echo and the Bunnymen), Michael Hutchence (yes you read that right! Hutch did a much better version of Morrison's poppier elements, and "Need You Tonight" is more sexual, more enticing than anything the Doors ever cut), Billy Idol (yeah, Billy-friggin'-Idol could not only out-drink Morrison, he could out-sing and out-pout him, too), and yeah I agree that Weiland blows Jimmy off the stage, too. Morrison isn't even the King of his own block, how the hell can he be the King of Rock and Roll? Speaking of which ... as always in these things, you the voting public get to decide what is rock and roll. If you think Johnny Cash is the ultimate rocker, go ahead and put him in here. Same goes for Bob Marley, Prince, James Brown, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, or even Al Franken! (Well, maybe not Al Franken, but you get where I'm going with this, right?)

Have you guys seen Ian Astbury with The Doors of 21st Century (or whatever they called it)? They don't need morrison. I mean it still sucks just as much but that guy does as good a Lizard King as Morrison ever did.

Prince, Bob Marley, James Brown, Hank Sr., I may have just rounded out my top 25!
I'm including Jimbo on the list, but he'll be in his place somewhere between 20 and 25.
I'm thinking Hendrix, Bruce, Chuck Berry, Elvis, and maybe James Brown are my top 5....

Why pick one when you can have them all, I say.

OK, OK, just to make a dead horse even deader (now I sound like George Bush )....So no one here except me likes the Doors? No one likes at least just one song? C'mon, there has to be something there, they aren't that bad....Soul Kitchen is kinda cool, no? Strange Days? LA Woman? Peace Frog? You at least gotta like the guitar riff on Peace Frog, right? Am I all alone on this?

I mean it still sucks just as much but that guy does as good a Lizard King as Morrison ever did. Wasn't Astbury the lead singer for the Cult? If so, I could definitely see that working, as he did a better Morrison back in the eighties, too. BTW, there is one name that has been conspicuous in its absence, and I bring it up now only because it seems like by this point in the American bands discussion I'd already had to shoot down attempts to nominate him as a band ... Bob Dylan. Bob Dylan, believe it or not, is an individual, not a band, not a group, just a guy. So IMHO any top five list that doesn't have his name in it is incomplete. Not sure who all will make my final cut, but here are a few of my top contenders right now: Dylan Bruuuuuuce Berry Petty Prince Zevon Paul Simon Neil Young John Fogerty Elvis Buddy Holly Little Richard Bob Seger This is gonna be really tough ... but that's what makes a list like this fun!

Paul - Bowiglou loves the Doors. Bowiglou took too many drugs in San Diego in the seventies. We just kind of look the other way when he starts blathering about his inner shaman. Seriously, Phil likes the Doors, as do Strat-0, RocDoc, Thorny, and a few more (I believe: if I mistakenly listed your name as a lover when you're a hater, I apologize). I used to say that I liked "Break On Through," but then I tried to listen to it about a month ago and realized that it was much worse than I'd remembered, so I deleted the file. Listening to the second half of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot right now, and trying to come up with sufficient justification for putting Tweedy in the top fifteen or so. Also need to make a spot for Sweet Lou in the top ten ... and the hits just keep coming. Anybody gonna nominate Eminem or Chuck D? Just curious ...

Mr. T/Melon/Melonius Thunk abruptly pulled up stakes and left a little while back. For the life of me, I do not know why. If anyone has his email, I'd like to drop him a line. Unfortunately, I only "talked" to him via PM here, so I don't have an actual email address.

I'm thinking rock/pop only really....I never talk hip-hop here b/c there is no real forum/outlet for it; I love me some Public Enemy though. Fight the Power; Chuck D is bad ass! I always kinda talk rap/rock in seperate terms...
Maybe one day we can do a top 15 rappers of all time; Chuck D should be #1 for that.

I would have mentioned Dylan, except that I think his credentials as a "rocker" are debatable. Obviously he's the single most important American figure in rock music, but for some reason there are just a whole lot of things that I attach to the term "rocker" that just don't apply to Dylan. Not bad ass enough? I don't know.
And yeah, I lifted my anti-Morrison schtick almost completely from Ken, but hey, he's right about it.
And I do like a few Doors songs. The reason that they ignite so much fury here isn't because they were awful (even though they often were), it's because there's such a huge (and completely undeserved) cult around Jim Morrison. It's not so much that a lot of us don't like the Doors, it's that we (well, speaking for myself anyway) think that they're the most overrated band in history. Not a bad band, but certainly no better than hundreds of other bands that aren't held in such high regard.
