OK, time for another survey ... and since I'm going to have to score this beast (at least unless the poster we all still tend to call Melon returns), I'm doing one that I really want to see the results of. So here is the next in the sequence that brought us the Greatest American and British Rock and Roll Bands (the VU and the Beatles, respectively) ...
Who is North America's greatest rock and roller? This list is for individual achievement, whether that individual achievement was as a solo artist or in a band is up to you to weigh. So if you really think that Kurt Cobain was the pinnacle of American rock and roll, put him on top. Or if you think Dave Grohl has done more, go ahead and pencil him in.
I'm expecting that most of the votes here will go to solo artists (i.e. Elvis Presley, Bruuuuuce, Petty, etc.), but there's nothing to stop you from voting for a member of a group, or a producer (Phil Spector anyone?). What I want to know is, which individuals do you think are/were the very greatest North American rockers?
Once again, the geographic limitation is the fifty United States, our chilly cousin to the Great White North, and our fiery relatives south of the border, to include the islands and whatnot in our fair hemisphere. Of course there will be a later survey which will pick up the rest of the world, but since rock and roll is an American invention, we have the (dubious) honor of going first.
So go ahead and give me your top twenty-five individuals, with or without explanations/justifications. I'll keep this open until (at least) May 10, 2006 ... that's two weeks from today for those of you without a calendar program running right now. As always, the cut-off will be, ummmmm, 5:00 p.m. mountain time. Not London time, not 5:00 p.m. in Moscow or Sydney, or where-ever ...

The answer is so clearly Lou Reed that it's not even worth discussing.
I'm submitting a motion that anyone who nominates Jim Morrison be banned immediately.

1. Oates 2. Police Man from Village People 3. Dale Earnhart 4. Hall
...Rocky I don't think Lou Reed's going to fit on my list...

I don't think he's that bad; jeez, he gets villified more than any other rock star I've ever come across. Sure he was a drunkard, but that can't be the only reason to hate him...By that standard you may as well hate on every rock star...I think Morrison had a pretty big impact on Rock N' Roll and certainly influenced countless other rockers; for that he should be in the top 25 IMO.

Top 25 does not equal "Greatest American Rocker" though, does it? That title would go to the Top...1. I win! Anyway, yeah, Morrison had a huge impact. The thing is, the people that were influenced by him primarily fall into two categories: 1) Artists who did Morrison's schtick at least 10 times better than he did, and in some cases more than that (Iggy Pop, Scott Weiland), and 2) "Artists" who completely suck ass. There is no middle ground for Morrison acolytes. He may be the most identifiable of a particular type of archetypal rocker, but was outdone at his own game many times over. He obviously can't be the Greatest American Rocker if he's not even the greatest at his particular niche.

I can see your argument for Iggy kinda... I remember when Pearl Jam fist hit the scene and all the media seemed to think Eddie was the second coming of Jim Morrison...Then he sang w/ the Doors at the R&R Hall of Fame in 1993, and that only seemed to fuel the fire... I don't know, I think Morrison was kinda alright. He had a huge stage presence w/o doing bodily harm (well except excessive drinking); it was just him and the music, no gimmics...Morrsion didn't have to rely on cutting himself to wow an audience; just my two cents....I also like the Doors more than the Stooges, and I realize I may be the only one here who feels that way...

I think I'll leave these boards if I ever see another argument about Jim Morrison ... This has been done to death, ressucitated and put to death again quite a few times ... that's a bit drastic, no? I haven't had any good old fashioned fights about Jim Morrison here....Granted I'm new, but I like to go to bat for the guy b/c he gets shitted on so much.
