These creatures are pretty cute too, but that doesn't stop us from eating them, does it?!

Since they don't "talk", they don't stand a chance !!
If only people could hear the cry of the carrot when it's brutaly yanked from the warm embrace of Mother Earth ... !!

Best scallops I ever had was on a fishing boat, straight from their shelves to my mouth with only a few drops of lemon juice ...

Not as cute as little pup seals but close enough ... How dare we allow ourselves to eat their mothers !! If pigs weren't meant to be eaten, then God wouldn't have made 'em so damn tasty. That's what my Great Dane (German Boarhound) tells me, anyway. And who am I to argue with him?

Erm, just in case it isn't totally obvious, I was absolutely joking when I said we shouldn't eat duck because ducks are cute. Of course, the cuteness of an animal has absolutely no relevance to the ethics of eating it.
...except in the case of Rocky Sigman, that is. When you're talking about such off-the-scale cuteness, well, all ordinary ethical systems cease to apply.
Aaaaaanyway, I had actually originally written a lengthy post with nearly the exact same content as tuneschick's, but then deleted it, because I was concerned everyone else had moved on from this topic and I was behind. But, apparently not, in which case, I just want to say "amen" to tunes' post, and I want to point something else out...
Many years ago, I mentioned on Random Top 10 a conversation I had with my Spanish boyfriend at the time about the practice of bullfighting. He said that he found it a little frustrating when Americans and other non-spanish Europeans unilaterally condemend bullfighting and became completely morally outraged about it, when many of these people ate factory-farmed meat. Although he could very well see the objections to bullfighting, he couldn't understand an ethical system in which bullfighting was obviously far more morally objectionable than factory-farming - in fact, to him, it seemed much less morally objectionable because of simple math - the level of death and destruction in factory farms vastly outnumbers the number of bulls killed in bullfighting. I was persuaded by his argument that there was a kind of cultural hypocrisy here - but when I posted to that effect on Random Top 10, it was Phil who rushed to disdain the argument and point out the horrific and unjustifiable cruelty of bullfighting.
Well I must confess I'm at a loss to comprehend why force-feeding ducks is an unobjectionable "tradition" but bullfighting is a moral atrocity. Or why it's a waste of time and priorities to speak out against foie gras but not bullfighting.
.....as for horse meat, dog meat, and all the rest of it - it's no more or less morally objectionable than eating any other meat.
Cheers, M
