I'm not familiar with Sloan, but aren't they a pretty big band? Wouldn't tickets be pretty hard to get for a 200-capacity gig?
I'm not sure if I'd even bother trying if I were in that same position, unless it was someone who I really, really, really, really, really, really, really liked (e.g. Mayumi Kojima, Soul Flower Union, a Sunny Day Service reunion show or something, if that ever happened).
But then again, maybe you really do like Sloan that much!

Sloan probably make a reasonably decent living and all but they're not, like, Nickelback or anything. Top 100 albums in Canada this week. Sloan's new album, two weeks on, at no. 52.

If we were going to be there, tickets wouldn't have been TOO hard to get, I don't think... it's a pretty small city and they didn't seem to be expecting tickets to sell out right away. Friend of mine is pretty much a permanent weekend fixture there and got tickets before the show was even announced, apparently, so we probably could have managed the same through her. Plus we still know quite a few people involved in putting on shows up there and the bar manager is a friend of S's, so I think we probably would have managed.
But we won't be able to and that sucks ass.

I wish I could... but (a) I only have one day left of paid vacation and need to use it at Christmas, and (b) I have to be at events here on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Stupid being a grown-up.

agh, are you trapped in the salaried thing where they "frown upon" you taking unpaid leave? that used to piss me off so much. you're not paying me, why should you care? apparently accountants (making more than me) don't make enough money to adjust your salary and retirement contributions a little bit if you get MONO AND CAN'T MAKE IT TO THE CAR MUCH LESS WORK. dar!

Oh, that sucks ass. Actually no, they're really good here about unpaid vacation, though I think I'm the only one who takes it. But I've already taken a few unpaid days and I'll end up taking a couple more at Christmas (in addition to my one paid day I have left) because I'm horrible at rationing my vacation days. I get four weeks this year and I have no idea where it all went. I'm an idiot, yes. Anyway, it's more because of the fact that I have events here next week that I can't miss - and October is really insane for me here, so I shouldn't be taking any more time off right now anyway. Plus, frankly, as much as I'd like to see Sloan in a tiny venue like that, I'd also have to take a five-hour Greyhound trip each way, and that's just a sacrifice I can't bring myself to make at the moment.

Actually, you're right. I'm so glad I'm not going to see them.
Now that you mention it, I'm also really glad that I missed Jenny Lewis last weekend and that I'm going to miss the New Pornographers too. I'm so lucky I don't have to suffer through any of those shows.

I'm really digging the tai chi. It's both physically and mentally good for me.
Gotta go now ... more tomorrow.
Peace.
