This is my latest music purchase. OK, I admit I'm a little slow on the uptake on some of these new gadgets. I only got my first iPod last year. Thought it was pretty cool, too! All 512 Mb! Well, it was a gift. However, I quickly realized that this was the perfect technology for the car stereo, and I was wondering how you would go about it. Little did I realize that you can get a cassette adapter for iPods and MP3 players for 20 bucks! I got one this weekend and it looks like time to rock and roll. I've got good speakers in my car and adequate power, but only a cassette/radio. There's nothing on the airwaves anymore, and I gave up dealing with cassette tapes, so I haven't listened to anything in the car other than NPR (except for special occasions and trips) for a long time. The automobile is just not a good environment for CDs and tapes, not here anyway.
Which brings me to item #2. My iPod totally locked up when I went to sync it the last time. I tried all the standard fixes, etc., but it's toast. Then I opened my eyes and realized that Apple sucks, as usual, and looked at other MP3 players. Why would you want all that "iTunes" hype and proprietary software that gimps up, anyway?
So, KayJay and I have new MP3 players! Drag and drop is nice! I got her a Sandisc and I got a Samsung. They were out of the Sandiscs when I went back. They're both 1Gb and around 50 bucks. Jeez.

m'k, This record pleased me on the first listen. By the time Iggy is singin' happily (on "My Idea Of Fun") the chorus, which goes " My idea of fun, is killing everyone" I knew we had a winner on our hands. Any criticism levelled at this album which includes "the lyrics are bad" has either a)completely missed the point, or the person b)has possibly never been exposed to iggy & the stooges in the first place, cuz, --c'mon-!-- Do I have to come out and say it-? It's THE STOOGES, duh ! Reknowned the world over for DUMB but tongue in cheek hilarious lyrics, this album "The Weirdness" not only fits the bill for that, but I swear to god, listening to the entire album, it's as if someone blew the dust off the "pause" button before "unpausing" The Stooges' music, which takes up on this album exactly where it left off, how long ago - ?-- 30 years or so --? Yeah. This is NOT The Stooges trying to incorporate "today's sound" into their music; it is not Iggy trying to be "relevant" in whatever capacity seems fit for 2007. What it IS, is straight up a fuckin' STOOGES album, people ! Hello, McFlies~! And it rocks. Sometimes slow & easy. Sometimes w/a bit more fiery passion. But it performs the job the Stooges originally intended, only w/a somewhat more laid back vibe. "Raw Power" it ain't -- but then again, that was not a Stooges album. That was Iggy letting all his youthful angst & energy out w/relentless passion. The man turned 60 right after The Weirdness was recorded. And for a wizened, muscular gramps - - he still delivers vocals surprisingly identical to those he belted out in his late 20s. As an aging rock veteran myself, I give The Weirdness a hearty 'thumb's up', and that was after only one spin. Its probably cuz I recognize the album for what it is -- not trying to be "important", not trying to cash in on any current musical trend or genre, just picking up directly where they left off all those years ago. I could not have asked for any more than that. In fact, it pleases me greatly.

Actually, it goes "My Idea of fun, is killing everyone" It's gotta rhyme. That's one thing Iggy does well. "She laughed and said 'Iggy, You have got a biggie'. I had no reply, So I just closed my eyes".
"I'm bored, I'm the chairman of the board/bored"

strat-o---cool that you bought MP3 players. I have had three different kinds. One was too quiet, one I couldnt navigate with, and one just sucked period (didnt work). I have one I use in the car thats cool.
people keep telling me I need an IPod. Before I invest the money (I would like one) i need to be sure its:
A.. LOUD. If I get to a song that needs to be loud on my headphones it can get there. Remember the cassette walkman? They had hiss but there was no limitations with volume. I dont want to hear "Don't Get Fooled Again" and have this lame ass wimpy sound to it. I better be able to get cassette walkman quality volume on it.
B. TRUSTWORTHY. I heard that once you give your music collection up to this you cant upload it to your machine. It better not lock up. If Im listening to Search and Destroy by the Stooges and it craps out it goes in the trash can.
C. LOUD.

"horrible goodness", that about sums it up man .. . . Any given Iggy Pop album since BLAH BLAH BLAH is chock full o' horrible goodness. . . songs like "Butt Town", "Starry Night" ("Who plays the best guitar? Who fuckin' cares?! = classic line), or "Squarehead" from Instinct . . . He's always got the goofiest ass dumb songs that just make me smile.
~
I listened to that Secret Chiefs 3 CD sisyphus last night while you were at work, and it is awesome. What a great band.

Now, now - we can't have the kiddies doing permanent damage to their hearing (and then suing). Caveat emptor, I always say! This one I got is not really loud with the "ear buds" but it's OK through the car stereo. Still not clean-your-ears-out loud, but it's got some thump and sounds reasonably loud even at road speeds. It has an EQ, so I dumped all the sliders to try to get some more gain out of it, but it didn't help a lot. I've got plenty of EQ on the car stereo anyway, and you have re-EQ a lot on the fly anyhow with mixes of different music. The car stereo is so-so; it's plenty loud with the receiver, but never was very loud through the cassette bus, and I'm sure the adapter doesn't help. It was mid-power in its day - I think it's 50w, which isn't shit today, but then I don't have subs and all that. I do think I need to look into updating. I can see absolutely no benefit and plenty of negatives to using Apple's iPod player and software.

Got turned onto this guy via "World Cafe" the other night: Viktor Krauss Far From EnoughSpinning it now and finding the nearly all-instrumental mix is one of mostly jazz elements but there's nu-country threads running through it, mostly brought to the surface via dobro/lap slide master Jerry Douglas. But wait, then you've got Steve Jordan keeping a rock steady pace on the drums, so it's got that sound going....ooooo, this is a nicely paced late-nite drive all over the map. Krauss' bandmates also include ace guitarist Bill Frisell and a certain lil' sister by the name of Alison lending her sweet pipes to a couple of tunes. Gawd: RocDoc if you haven't already scooped this up, I'd highly recommend it to you. AS WELL as his new one II. that I've already ordered for delivery later in the week. ~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm holding off on The Stooges reunion until I can hear some more of it.....think I'll pass on that Billy Idol but what a great cover! On second look -- I think I need to hear THAT TOO now!

I just ordered up Bill Frisell's East/West(with Krauss), the Krauss one you just mentioned AND one by a singer named Carrie Rodriguez that I read very good things about, whose disc Krauss also plays on....
Shit, Krauss plays on LOTS of Bill Frisell's albums...and I've got probably 5-6 of 'em, except for that East/West it seems.
Got 2-3 Jerry Douglas solo discs also...fanTAStic player. The shit he does on the live Alison Krauss disc is simply unreal.
