Thorn... the first couple of Theatre of tragedy albums are absolutely top notch gothic metal, with an awesome interplay between the harsh male vocalist and the angelic female vocals...
It's such a pity they went on to make "Musique", which, apparently was meant to be some sort of post - modern statement ala OK Computer (but not even remotely good) in a metal sense. It plain doesn't work, and for my ears ruins the momentum the band gained in the first couple of releases...
I'm hoping that at this point you don't really like that album... for me it just turned from something enigmatic, brilliant and intricate to something throwaway and spontaneous... which of course might have been what they really wanted to do and what some fans nowadays really enjoy... but for me, it just received a big "no".

Today I bought X's Under the Big Black Sun. I hope you're proud, Mary.
Yeah, Riley, UTAC is quite the mix of all styles of GBV. I don't think it's quite as solid as several of their other discs (there are at least a few songs that could probably be cut), but it is still a very rewarding listen, and has a few of my favorite GBV tracks in "Everywhere With Helicopter", "Back to the Lake", and "Christian Animation Torch Carriers".
NP: The Pixies--Live in Minneapolis ("Gigantic")

Impressions on new Gomez...
I actually quite like it, but I can see how it falls short of Bring it On and Liquid Skin. There really isn't any BAD music on "Split the Difference", it just doesn't feel as unique or quirky as Gomez's first two albums.
But hey, in its favour, I don't mind the new slightly more "roughed up" sound the band employs, and some of the tracks, particularly within the first 6 - 7 sound fresh and new and interesting.
I found myself wandering a bit and unfocussed during the second half of the disk... maybe I'm not concentrating as much, or maybe its just not holding my interest as much at that point.
But overall, nothing bad on the album at all, just not as consistently impressive as their first two.

[glow=purple,2,300]I'm hoping that at this point you don't really like that album... for me it just turned from something enigmatic, brilliant and intricate to something throwaway and spontaneous... [/glow]~scottsy Actually scottsy -- I haven't heard that one yet, and from the sounds of it, I shan't bother. (thanx for the fair warning) The only one I've heard is AEGIS, and it is quite lovely indeed. I am only going to seek out earlier ones than that. [shadow=beige,left,300]A Pagan Place[/shadow] excellent place to start, Shane. Red Army Blues in particular (that's my favourite off that album). Man you're gonna love it. I also love "A Church Not Made With Hands", which I know you'll dig. Speaking of that song -- I once made a cryptic reference to it on your old TAO board, something along the lines of wryly commenting it was a "Board Not Made With Hands" -- do you remember that? @ the time I believe it went over every1s heads. Looks like there is a veritable "vinyl frenzy" going on. Can't wait to jump in ~!

given what I've read about Gomez, and those who know my taste (i.e.: blatantly bad) would you recommend their latest?

I can almost understand bowiglou's labeling of Los Angeles as punk by numbers, as compared to Wild Gift at least, it is much closer to that. However, it's still way better than almost all punk records I've heard, and if nothing else "The World's A Mess It's In My Kiss" transcends the genre.

Got this off CraigsList... thought it was funny in a Spinal Tap sorta way:
TEXTHello metalheads and headbangers alike,
Here are a few pointers to how to make a decent ad for musicians
1) Take time to type out each letter correctly. Sometimes grammer is hard, but I'm sure Mr. Dictionary can help us out. Maybe even a visit from Miss. Thesaurus wouldn't hurt either.
2) Tone down on the cussing. It doesn't matter if you yell out FUCK, SHIT and PISS in everyday life, but you are trying to get people to answer your ad and you don't want to sound like you have limited speech
3) Make an effort to not sound like a prideful fool who describes his talent as "plays or scream like a motherfucker" (again going back to point #2) and actually take the time to talk about your playing style, but again, saying more than just "I (or "we" assuming you ad is for a band) like to play fucking fast and tear shit up." Sure, listing bands gives a vague idea, but sometimes people need more than names of bands to get an idea.
4) Along the same lines as point #3: Get a little personal about describing yourself as a musician or your band. No, it isn't a silly emo thing. It may actually help people get an idea of who you are! Then people know what to expect from you and your band!
There you go. I hope this proved to be some help so other people don't have to waste time reading a stupid ad, like how you wasted your time reading this silly rant.
Rock on.

Cognitive Dissonance in Practice
I rather like Thorny His knowledge and predilection towards Bowie and like-minded cohorts has much to be commended. He recently listened to some X and Bowie He also has a penchant for Yes and prog-rockers. I have a general loathing for navel-searching prog rockers. But I still like Thorny.
