I bought a tribute disc with an irresistable title yesterday...
'Rock And Roll Doctor - A Tribute To Lowell George' ...with a very formidable supporting cast...Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, David Lindley, JD Souther, Chris Hillman, Randy Newman....
~
Also bought a ½ of a double disc set at the used store by a great Mexican neo-psychedelic/hip-hop/you-name-it band, Cafe Tacuba....not knowing that I only had ½ the full picture...Reves/Yosoy is supposed to be pretty much their masterwork, but the disc I ended up with is FAR more electronica than this music fan likes...tho the Kronos Quartet guest stars...the other is the more 'traditional' according to AMG. Tho to these guys, 'traditional' means little...they're very cool.

A couple of newer Australian acts are catching my attention lately.... I don't even remember them by name, but I have heard a couple of killer tracks on Triple J (Australia Wide Youth Network) lately... one features members of my beloved Bluebottle Kiss...
Other than, my wishlist is a bit bare at the moment, which I figure is kinda good considering i am on a savings kick!!!

Fuck the budget, I just had to get:
The Martinis- Smitten - Joey Santiago's bubblegum Pixies-meets-Veruca Salt-project which is very entertaining and brings a hint of summer along! A wedding chapel-favourite!
Badly Drawn Boy- One Plus One Is One in which the sartorical Mr Gough plunders the vaults of Mull Historical Society, Jethro Tull and his own albums to a pleasurable listen once again...great cover art!)
Ayreon- The Human Equation - again a very over the top-symphonic masterpiece, courtesy of mr. Arjan Anthony Lucassen who is almost the Jim Steinman of symphonic rock. Borrowing this time the talents/lungs of James LaBrie, Devin Townshend Martin Orford (IQ) and Mike Baker to come up with another fascinating concept album about the human senses and the make-up of each and every one of us...yeah, bombats through and through but, as Kenny Everett would say, all done in the best possible taste....
Spock's Beard- The Light- been chasing this album for some time- it's the legendary debut album of Neal Morse's band before he went solo and on a religious tic....classic sympho with tremendous guitarwork, remastered from shitloads of demos. Love this to pieces.

I am currently using my disinterest in alot of new releases to save save save... but there wikll a come a time when some stuff is going to be irresistable, I am sure!
I really have to Say Gomez's SPlit the Difference" has grown on me now, I'm quite enjoying it with every spin...
Still playing Epicure to death and Something for Kates "The Official Fiction" has taken a new rise to prominence again...
Really, though I am struggling to find things all too exciting in the record store right now, it's a bit of a ywan period for me i must admit.

I've had an inexplicable about-face on the acquisition of Velvet Revolver. Now that the date has arrived, I could give a shit. Not only have I decided against getting it -- I could care less about ever hearing it, for some weird reason. [So y'all can let me know if I'm missing anything]

* { VELVET REVOLVER, "CONTRABAND" (RCA)
The best thing that can be said about the debut effort from the bloated rock supergroup Velvet Revolver is that it's probably better than the long-promised "Chinese Democracy" from the floundering, Axl Rose-led Guns N' Roses. But given that we're unlikely to ever actually hear that mythical album, this isn't saying much.
It's hard to believe that veteran Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash, bassist Duff McKagan and latter-day drummer Matt Sorum could actually find a more egotistical and messed-up singer than Rose, but with former Stone Temple Pilots frontman Scott Weiland, they got their (shell of a) man. The problem with this overproduced, thoroughly generic, but otherwise unremarkable piece of hard-rock product is that the secret weapons of the famous combos that give this project its pedigree are missing in action.
If former Guns N' Roses guitarist and Indiana homeboy Izzy Stradlin or the powerhouse sibling team of Stone Temple Pilots' DeLeo brothers had a hand in the songwriting, Velvet Revolver might have been worth hearing. Instead, we get hollow, instantly forgettable ditties such as "Sucker Train Blues" and "Dirty Little Thing," sad reminders of former glories that are now a distant echo of the past.

A coupla more maybe interesting ones...
~
** * { PJ HARVEY, "UH HUH HER" (ISLAND)
One eloquent Irish rock critic dubbed Polly Jean Harvey's first album in four years "a coroner's report written by a poet," and that's a hard description to top.
On her last outing, the enigmatic English rocker was uncharacteristically sunny and upbeat; she was in love, dontcha know, and writing about the joys of her coupling against the romantic backdrop of New York City. But that Manhattan and her relationship no longer exist. Though Harvey has always been adamant that fans shouldn't read her songs as autobiographical, it's clear on tunes such as "Shame," "The Pocket Knife," "The Life and Death of Mr. Badmouth" and "The Darker Days of Me and Him" that things ended badly.
Lyrically, Harvey is back in raging banshee mode, seeking bluesy catharsis from her pain as only a punk rocker scorned can at the man who did her wrong. Musically, she returns to her roots, revisiting the more stripped-down, harsh-to-abrasive sounds of "Dry" and "Rid of Me." She recorded in her home studio in rural Dorset and played almost all of the instruments --including guitar, bass, autoharp, violin and keyboards -- herself. (Rob Ellis added drums.)
The disc is not the equal of 1995's extraordinary "To Bring You My Love," which remains Harvey's masterpiece. But the songs are likely to gain an added dimension in live performance -- her material always does -- and "Uh Huh Her" maintains the artist's position as one of the most important voices of her generation, and a rocker who is simply much too powerful to ignore.

* { AUF DER MAUR, "AUF DER MAUR" (CAPITOL)
As a backing player, Vancouver native Melissa Auf Der Maur made a valuable musical contribution (and an eye-catching addition) to Hole and the Smashing Pumpkins. But that doesn't mean she's capable or worthy of leading a band of her own.
Drawing on the help of an impressive roster of cool rock pals -- including drummers Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters) and Brant Bjork (Kyuss), guitarists James Iha (the Pumpkins, A Perfect Circle) and Erik Erlandson (Hole), singer Mark Lanegan (the Screaming Trees) and Queens of the Stone Age main men Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri -- Auf Der Maur gives us a set of songs that straddle the line between stoner rock and mainstream alternative-rock radio fare circa 1995. But the sound and fury of the big, stomping production aren't justified by her second-rate songwriting or her stilted, limited singing.
She's a laughably bad lyricist with embarrassing obsessions with Dungeons & Dragons-style fantasy and B-movie melodrama. (From the single "Followed the Waves": "He's just a drunken gambling man / I'm gonna shuffle his deck clean.") Both her bottom-heavy bass playing and her passion for gothic posing were better employed with an earlier side project, the cover band Hand of Doom, where she wisely left the songwriting to the mighty Black Sabbath. Sorry, Melissa, but you're no Tony Iommi or Geezer Butler, much less an Ozzy Osbourne.

** * PHILIPP FANKHAUSER, "TALK TO ME" (MEMPHIS INTERNATIONAL)
Those who were expecting Swiss guitarist-vocalist Philipp Fankhauser to come out with ax swinging will be surprised by the soulful sound of this CD. The disciple of Johnny Copeland covers the Bobby Bland hit "Members Only" and Solomon Burke's "Down in the Valley," which set a high bar for Fankhauser's vocals. His half-dozen originals, plus two by his mentor, aren't the easiest tunes to sing, either, and the grainy-voiced Fankhauser proves a better arranger than soul-blues belter.
Jeff Johnson
Note: Fankhauser will appear at 5 p.m. Saturday on the Best Buy Showcase stage at the 2004 Chicago Blues Festival.
