JAC -- yeah, I'd be happy to hear that RHP stuff. I'll PM you with my address. Thanks.
My mix isn't really my all-time favorite songs, but these are all songs that would make my personal hundred best. I've tried to represent the artists who matter most to me, without it turning into simply a bunch of totally obvious songs. So you'll find (almost) all my "usual suspects" here, but represented by some lesser known gems (i.e. Gates of the West instead of Clampdown, Gardening at Night instead of So.Central Rain or Man on the Moon, etc.) ... and a couple that are just out of left field.
Ah hell ... here's the current mix, subject to change at any moment:
"Linus & Lucy," Wynton Marsalis "How Blue Can You Get," B.B. King “Heroes,” [live] David Bowie "Can You Heal Us (Holy Man)," Paul Weller "Passion Is No Ordinary Word," Parker, Graham & The Rumour "Jools And Jim," Pete Townshend "Gates Of The West," The Clash "Behind The Wall Of Sleep," The Smithereens "Radio, Radio," Elvis Costello & The Attractions "Gardening At Night," R.E.M. "Poor Girl," X "Lawyers, Guns & Money," Warren Zevon "Money (That's What I Want)," The Beatles "Born In The U.S.A.," [acoustic demo] Bruce Springsteen "Fortunate Son," Creedence Clearwater Revival "The Seeker," The Who "Set The House Ablaze," [Live] The Jam "Like A Rolling Stone," [Live] Bob Dylan "Little Wing," Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble "The Late Greats," Wilco
Does that fit the criteria for the current mix?

Well, it fits my criteria, and I'm the one getting the thing...
Definitely including some Wynton Marsalis in my mix, because that's something pretty essential to my life. My biggest challenge right now is getting this thing to flow right...

OK then, that's probably going to be the final sequence, then. That's a fairly good overview of my taste, a little jazz and blues, a lot of straightforward rock, and a bunch of punk/new wave, etc. There are (obviously) a bunch of things missing, but I was really trying not to hit all the obvious choices ... I did have to include "Heroes," but it's the live version from Stage, which I thought wouldn't be as obvious a choice. OK, now it's time to get back to work, or at least putting together my top 25 albums.

Luke, I think that if Phil's gonna like any grunge, it'll be AIC's "Would?" That is just one hell of a song, with nothing wanky or cliched about it. And the shared lead vocals work extremely well on that track. I'm not a big AIC fan, but "Would?" is easily one of the best twenty (hell, probably top ten) songs of the nineties.
Looking over your list, I think you're gonna be pretty pleased with what you'll be getting. But if you don't, well ... tough!
Back to work ...

Yeah, I need to get in the swing of things here at work, too. Problem is that I have to design some posters today, and I'm NOT in the fucking mood to start up my lap-top and break out Illustrator.
I was thinking "Got Me Wrong" or "No Excuses" over "Would" only because I know how Phil absolutely despises Black Sabbath, and once you get into guitar-heavy AIC, you're getting into Sabbath country. But "Would" doesn't quite fit that bill like "Sickman" or "Man In The Box" does, so it may get on there.

I am about to burn the mix CD for Mantis. Since I do not know ANYTHING about what he may like I just put some favorites on there. Its crazy--its the most bizarre mix I have ever made. But it covers all the bases ALMOST. I am only going to fret the sequencing for five minutes--once its done its done. I will post the tracklist soon.

My ideas for my disc... Mr. Holzman, be prepared for a very Aussie mix here... don't worry, I'm not planning on a Men at Work compilation... :-)
I thought by jotting a few things down here it would get my mind solidify a few things and I can go from there with burning the CD...
Batchelor Pad (Parts 1 and 2) - Gerling I Feel So Cold - Underground Lovers Owen's Lament - Augie March Louisiana / Two Places at Once / Cantilever - The Church (this one's going to be toughie to choose!) Roll Credit / Monsters / Deja Vu - Something for Kate (another tough pick) When the River Runs Dry - Hunters and Collectors Fractions / Remainie - Decoder Ring No Illusions - 78 Saab Along the Run - Art of Fighting Return to the City of Folded Arms / Gangsterland - Bluebottle Kiss It's Over - The Devoted Few Stumble Away / Dive / Salt - David Bridie Walk Me Home - Not Drowning, Waving Sirens / Talk About Love / The Old Years - My Friend The Chocolate Cake Churchill's Black Dog - Things of Stone and Wood Too Much Sunshine / Redneck Wonderland / Bedlam Bridge / King of the Mountain - Midnight Oil (VERY Hard to pick this one too...) Cattle and Cane - The Go Betweens Stopless - Screamfeeder Goodbye Girl - Epicure

I will make some corrections--having the same song twice on a mix is unacceptable. That gives me a minute and 10 seconds worth of wiggle room. Im just going to replace the second CLUB MOLLUSKA with "Im Like You" by the Urinals.....Theres gotta be one song on this CD that is acceptable!

OK, my mix CD is finally done... and I say I am immensely proud of this compilation... quite frankly it is among the better ones I have made! I'm really pleased with my song choices, how it flows, the ground it covers musically, and the fact that it will probably introduce Ken to a whole range of music he's never heard before... I'm listening to it back now and enjoying immensely!
The tracklisting turned out as follows...
Cattle and Cane - The Go Betweens A beautiful, choppy but ultimately elegant and evocative, pastoral song about childhood, growing up in the cane feilds of Queensland
Above the Dove - Screamfeeder Weird lyrics about Aleins invading and taking over earth, and a great chorus riff with a nice cooking rhythm track.
Starsigns - Underground Lovers - Love the shimmery riffs in this, which is why i wanted to show it off, it's got a good stomping beat too.
Louisiana - The Church One of my favourite songs by the Church. Just an elegant sounding sound, with a subtle story about war time relationships... actually, distance and relationships is a bit of a subtle theme to all my mix CD songs... as it well a theme in my life.
Batchelor Pad (Parts 1 and 2) - Gerling Very simply lyrically, but this just has such great guitar playing and instrumental work. I love it.
Black the Sun - Alex Lloyd - It's a pity Alex Lloyd turned out such a commercial artist. His debut single was rich and textured, and quite memorable.
Goodbye Girl - Epicure A slow, sad, paino ballad. Reminds me of the many times I have had to farewell Mellie at this or that airport... although the lyrics are actually far darker in their subtext.
When the River Runs Dry - Hunters and Collectors Quite simply an exceptionally intense song. Still has punch after all these years in my collection.
Churchill's Black Dog - Things of Stone and Wood - Folky rock with interesting lyrics, not dissimilar to Out of Time era REM in some ways.
Invent the Summer - Bluebottle Kiss - Broody and brilliant. This reminds me of those long, hot dry summers...
Something for Kate - 20 Years Typical "save yourself from monotony type themes SFK explore... cynical and brilliant.
Mutiny - Big Heavy Stuff - My favourite slow broody but angry song!
Powderfinger - JC I probably like this because it doesn't really sound alot like Powderfinger's normal sound... it reminds of the great promising band they were before they seemed to become radio friendly.
Owen's Lament - Augie March An epic. A BIG epic... really pulls alot of common threads in my mix together though, missing a partner, being away from one you love, war, etc...
Walk Me Home - Not Drowning, Waving - A Mellie and Scottsy theme song... the short guitar solo at the end of this song still sends shivers down my spine.
Remanie - Decoder Ring A nice soothing instrumental to close out the compilation.

I like how you talk about sequencing the CD to strike a certain feel Scottsy --- sometimes a certain song has to be picked to butt up against another certain song!
Glenn --- seeing "Swords & Tequila" pop up in the middle of that list was a fuckin' scream!!!!
