I know I brought this up a while back on another thread, but as it's definitively "post -rock", I thought I'd recap. This is a collaboration between mono and world end's girlfriend (1 guy), and it's really subdued, kinda sounds like Eno's "Discreet Music", to me, its got that same vibe (and by "Discreet Music", I do mean the title track from that famous ambient work). Heard it yet, skvor -?

Man I wanna get this sooo bad. I heard a little BORIS at a friend's, and I liked what I heard. Total drone -out, low-reverb psychedelic post- punk / post-rock, post-everything I guess. *Gotta love how he copied NICK DRAKE's "Bryter Later" cover, here* Guess that makes BORIS ... "post -folk", too huh Yeah I gotta get me some of this. Will probably have to order it online, since I can never find any in the record stores around here...

The new Boris is really good. The record is entitled "Pink" and it is getting some rave reviews. I think you would really like it. I also picked up that Mono collaberation and I have to admit your description of it is spot on.

Well, I've finally got hold of some Mono as promised - took me a few months lads, but I never forget - and I have to say it's quite simply an astonishing marriage of beauty and power. People can sneer about clichéd, formulaic loud/soft dynamics all they want (while happily accepting the old 3-minute verse-chorus structure ad nauseum without any problems whatsoever) but this band are definitely not just part of a crowded field. I feel transported by One Step More..., and the tracks I've heard off the last couple of albums so far sound even more lush and personal. Music like this... sure, you maybe have to be in the right mood (and have some spare time to sit back!) but like GY!BE or Sigur Ros, you can suddenly find yourself thinking this band are a stupid amount better than anything else on the planet.
Equally essential are three discs by upcoming UK act iLiKETRAiNS: (1) Their new single - Spencer Perceval CD Single (2) Progress-Reform Mini LP (3) Before the Curtains Close (Parts I and II) The latter of these is deleted and rare, but the songs are widely available in mp3 format. I'm actually depressed that Kaiser Chiefs are Leeds' best known act instead of these guys. I did have doubts about whether to include them in a post-rock discussion, as many of their songs actually clock in around 5 minutes (the new single is over 9 minutes long and will get ZERO radio play) and they do have (coherent!) vocals on nearly every song... but they made the wikipedia post-rock band list, confirming what my own ears were telling me about their dynamics, guitar textures and song structures. This is a post-rock band. And a bloody good one at that. Equally amazing are their chilling, animatronic videos, reminiscent in some ways of TOOL... all of which I recommend checking out on youtube. The striking images in the videos work especially well with the thought-provoking, often chilling or tragic subject matter of the songs, whether that's Captain Scott's ill-fated and fatal polar expedition (Terra Nova), the descent into madness of one-time chess world champion Bobby Fischer (A Rook House for Bobby), the assassination of a British prime minister (Spencer Perceval), murder of a spouse (Before the Curtains Close Part II), or the closing of rural railway lines and ensuing redundancies in the British rail industry (The Beeching Report). Their debut album drops in the Autumn, and should be a classic.
Finally, I've decided to finally check out that Hope of the States album I've been meaning to buy for about 3.5 years. Unless anyone quickly tells me I'd be wasting me money...

Oh, I dunno Rit. I remember good things about HotS from their sporadic TV appearances, though the guy's voice was a wee bit dodge, if I recall...
