I voted Metallica....why not? They invented thrash metal (Kill 'Em All) and released 4 near flawless albums that decade. Plus they were the biggest and most respected metal band in the land all without the help of MTV and mainstream media outlets like RollingStone....

I totally meant Goo, and not Dirty. Goo is great.

My three favorites bands at the time were probably Motley Crue, Kiss & Poison. Mine were Whitesnake, Poison and Skid Row. This all really dates us. Mine @ that time were : Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Rush, Yes, King Crimson

The bands I COULDN'T STAND during that time (early 80s):
Talking Heads Loverboy B-52s Whitesnake Poison etc
The bands I LOOKED @ IN DISDAIN during that time (because they were blatant Aerosmith ripoffs in my view):
Motley Crue Ratt
(I didn't care for Whitesnake cuz I felt they were a total Zep ripoff)
And I didn't care all that much for Def Leppard (although I halfway remember that "Eebin outin glotten globin" song rocked)
IRON MAIDEN was more my style (and Black Sabbath)
Caveat:
*By the late-80s, I was totally down with the Talking Heads and B-52s*

Did The Cure really rule the 80s? Oh well, I still say REM, followed closely by U2 and the 'mats.
