Return to Cookie Mountain is one of the top ten albums this year, but "Return to Dookie Mountain" is enough to make me hate the album just so I can call it that.
The Pixies were way fucking better than Led Zeppelin. So were the Talking Heads, Sonic Youth, and Pavement. SY still is, in fact. And Soundgarden, to boot.
Here goes:
Doolittle>Surfer Rosa>Bossanova>Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain>Slanted and Enchanted>Trompe Le Monde>Wowee Zowee>Brighten the Corners>Terror Twilight
I'd add SY in there, but they have about 90 albums. Dirty and Sister would be in the top four, though...

Navarro's guitarin' on "Three Days" surpasses anything I've ever heard Page play, I must admit. But I've said it before. Page is the greatest songwriter of the 20th century, period. You may begin your mocking.

I voted PIXIES. Pavement is great, no doubt about it. As a matter if fact the whole debate is kind of asinine, cos I like em both equally.
Lets focus on the cons of both bands: PAVEMENT--Crazy. I love em. They were mightily esoteric on purpose. I to be honest with you prefer Terrror Twilight to Slanted and Enchanted. My answer is pick up GBVs Bee Thousand. And shut up. Tell malkmus to put out another solo record. Snotty ass rich kid college rock. I still know every word to all that shit...eps, comps, al the reissues, i love them. Any of us could be the next Malkmus in an underdog T shirt.
PIXIES- Totally fucking rocked. no fucking whining. They really did. I dont know if "rocking" means anything now--but they did. Side one of Trompe Le Monde was just as kick ass as side one of SURFER ROSA.

Comparing Jimmy Page to David Navarro-Priceless.

Have you ever heard Dave Navarro play? He's one of the most technically proficient guitarists around. Just because you don't like him doesn't mean he can't play. Mariah Carey, technically speaking, has a wider vocal range than Kate Bush. That doesn't necessarily make her a better singer. Perhaps, but I was responding to DED's specific assertion that Page was a more technically proficient guitar player. That particular point I was making had nothing to do with which was better, as the point I was responding to wasn't about that either, it was about technical proficiency.

sonic youth > the fall > the pixies > pavement
the fall, btw, have released a ridiculous amount of total garbage, thus making it difficult to evaluate them overall. however, their best albums are absolute flagship post-punk albums, every bit as important as the classics from gang of four and joy division and all those folks.
sonic youth are one of the most important bands of all time, of any era, of any genre.
Cheers, M
