DSOTM gets my vote and my vote alone??? I should rename this "The Sacrilege Against Dark Side Of the Moon" poll. I'm sure certain people arent voting for it simply because that is the one everyone is supposed to vote for. You know how that goes. As for me, Pipers truly is the only essential PinkFloyd album ever made. If you check out my blog I have a list of The 13 essential albums of rockjism and Pipers is one of them. Along with Sgt Peppers it first ushered in the era of album-oriented rock that is so important to rockjism.

It is apple and oranges, but I'll tell you this. I still listen to Madcap Laughs/Barrett/Opel on a fairly regular basis. They are essentials in my rotation like certain Dylan and Neil Young. Whereas the only time I listen to Pink Floyd (besides Pipers and a few of their other Barrett-era stuff) is when it comes on a radio station. Wagemann, you're at least halfway ok w/me

Ayinger - What about 'The Crying Song', off MORE -? That's one of my fave Floyd tunes ever, period.

I've noticed we have somewhat similar notions on certain things--I just come off as an ass to most people here. I posted a blog about Barrett when he died last year. Ayinger - What about 'The Crying Song', off MORE -? That's one of my fave Floyd tunes ever, period. oh FUCK yeah! see, that's just classic early Floyd sound!! Before they were even ripping themselves off, you know what I mean? They just had that sound with a tune like that -- dreamy, folky....it's similar to why I dig on Obscured With Clouds and tracks like "Wot's...uh, The Deal." These two soundtracks have some great stuff that captures essential planks of the bridge between the Syd-era psychedelica to the Gilmour/Waters spacerock days. Both these albums have real rocking passages but also touch back into that acidpop phase too. It's the beginning of the trip that took you into Meddle and finally unleashed you to The Dark Side Of The Moon.

Yeah I've also wondered if theres any recorded stuff Syd did that his mom might have in their attic or something now. It just seems unlikely that the musical muse in him would suddenly shut off after 3 years of creative genius...

Yeah, and if that's true, then most aren't voting for the one they think is the best, but the one that they would prefer to put in their stereo at the moment. Oh well.

I prefer early Pink Floyd-PIPER (and no its not shit--why dont you call Sgt Pepper shit? Loves FOREVER CHANGES is shit?) through Meddle. Syd Barrett was cool. Crazy. I want to ask this question--what album took more risks back in 67 than that besides the Beatles? Tell me.
I havent listened to it all the way in a decade but WISH YOU WERE HERE, as an album, makes me yawn. I will throw it on tomorrow to see if thats changed but prolly not.
Obscured by Clouds is a great record, so is More.

FWIW, I honestly think Wish You Were Here is their best album.

Pepper has in common with Piper is people's tendency to grossly overrate it. Pet Sounds and Freak Out came out in 1966.

The Velvet Underground & Nico and White Light/White Heat both came out in '67. I suppose that an argument could be made that Sgt. Pepper's was a bigger risk because they had more to lose, but they also had an audience who would swallow up anything they put out. I dunno.

DED-Pet Sounds has nothing to do with Pink Floyd! Totally different. Frank Zappa was just whacked to begin with. And great. Overrated--what does that mean--that people get pleasure from it? Ive heard alot of people say My Bloody Valentine is overrated. Ugly Kid Joe thinks sex is overrated. Who gives a shit? Wish You Were Here is SMOOTH JAZZ to my ears. Like I said I have not heard it in a decade....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! Im tired of wasting time on this boring argument. (read: i have no ammunition for it!) I love early Pink Floyd. So what? Im wrong youre right. Whatever! Facing facts--Early Pink Floyd was all experimental and crazy. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didnt. So what? I wasent around when they came out but those albums are pretty cool now--the so called cultural signifigance is still there. I like Pink Floyd. I especially dig the early stuff. Sure--I cant compare Piper to Rubber Soul but that desnt mean its RUBBISH. I like Hermans Hermits too. And the Easybeats. And the Velvet Underground. PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN is alright.

I just meant Pet Sounds takes more chances then Piper, it doesn't wear those chances on surface quite like Piper does but took bigger risks and IMO paid off much more.
I didn't really think we were arguing...of course it's just fine if you like Piper, clearly it's not a minority opinion. I certainly don't deny it's place in history though personally I see no point in listening any further then Astronomy Domine...
