Okay, I listened to Year Zero, and it is in no way even close to the top ten this year.
I think it'll have more longevity than With Teeth, though, no doubt at all.
I'm torn on the new Pumpkins. They're my favorite band ever, and I agree that Jimmy and Billy are all you need, but they already did that with ZWAN. It's not going to be the Pumpkins without the aesthetics, I'm thinking.
So fred, Local H has no label right now? That sucks, I'll still get more excited for a Local H release than just about any other artist.
My favorite albums this year have been from Ted Leo and Of Montreal. The new Voxtrot is good but I don't wanna listen to it too much until the proper release. The Deerhunter is pretty good, I agree, and that new Panda Bear ain't bad.
I like the new Kings of Leon a lot, dig the new Papercuts, really dig the new Ponys, and the new Joel Plaskett that just dropped is a lot of fun. The new Apostle of Hustle is fanfuckingtastic.
My most anticipated yet to come are probably the new Stars, Pumpkins, and Ween. I can't wait for the Ween, seeing them live again next month.

My feeling on the new PUmpkins is this:
The fact that Billy couldn't get the original lineup interested, coupled with the knocks he's taken from having Paz run off w/Pajo leaving Zwan in the lurch, my feelings are that Billy & Jimmy have got the "Fuck em then" attitude going, and this attitude of defiance can go a long way towards fueling a kickass album, know what I'm say'n?
It's like, If I were in Billy's shoes, I'd be twice as passionate about putting out the new pumpkins, and D'arcy and Iha can fuck right off, I'd be like "It's your loss" and get on with it.
Yes, Billy and Jimmy are the core of this band, always were from the get go. There is simply no reason to believe the Pumpkins can't rise like a Phoenix from the ashes of its past.
If there's any truth to the alleghations that this is more in the vein of "Siamese Dream", well fuuuuck, what more could we ask for?
Watch out, Trent. Billy's comin' up in your rearview, and he's goan smoke your ass in the passing lane. That's my prediction . . .
...that the new Pumpkins will be anything but lame.

I'm glad Voxtrot isn't just an Austin phenomenon anymore. I'm really glad that those guys are getting popular. Man, they are a great band.
I agree with you on the Ted Leo and the Of Montreal, but Ted Leo is probably going to get the top spot for the worst album art for a release this year. That album cover is just terrible.
Apostle of Hustle is super good stuff.
Ponys are good but not great. They make me want to listen to "Daydream Nation" again which can bother me sometimes.
I think I'm such a huge Kings of Leon fan that I don't know if they can do any wrong for me. Shit, that's not true, if they released something like say, I don't know, the new Modest Mouse record, then yeah, I'd hate them.

I love you thorn, but I gotta say that there are two things that are bothering me about this whole Pumpkins thing. I don't think they should call it the Smashing Pumpkins. It's just lame. They should have stuck with the Zwan name and just hired some other people to fill in for Paz/Pajo//Sweeny peeps. For me The Smashing Pumpkins suck if it's not Iha, Darcy, Jimmy, and Billy. I didn't like "Adore" as much because the drums on that album sucks. "Machina" would have been a mess with or without Darcy though, that's for sure. The other thing that you are forgetting is that I think Billy Corgan at this point is just too much of an egotistical asshole prick to do anything that will come close to the first two Pumpkins records. While I don't usually really pay attention to people's personalities when it comes to listening to their bands, Billy Corgan is an exception because I think he's a dick to his fans just like I think Issac Brock is a dick to his own band and his fans as well. That shit turns me off.

I guess we'll have to wait and see, then. But yeah, he could've, and maybe should've, kept the Zwan name going. Judging by the stellar songwriting and musicianship on their album, Zwan could've overtaken the Pumpkins legacy given another decade.

I think so as well. That Zwan record is just really good.

I agree that the Pumpkins were all about Corgan and Chamberlain, but there's just something aesthetically displeasing about them using the Smashing Pumpkins moniker. I mean, can you imagine if Lennon and McCartney had formed a new band in the 70s and called themselves the Beatles?
Whether it's a "return to form" or not, I'm kind of skeptical that I'll like the new album to be honest, though I know shouldn't pre-judge things like that. I just feel like I'm moved away from that sound, and it just isn't where I am, taste-wise. Which is also why I haven't bothered checking out the new NIN, but I guess I'll give it a few listens the next time I'm at the record store.
I haven't heard a single note from Zwan btw...

So fred, Local H has no label right now? That sucks, I'll still get more excited for a Local H release than just about any other artist. yeah.....ever since here comes the zoo every albums been on a different label...palm pictures, thick, studio e, cleopatra.....and of course g&p, aka the label they created to release a few demo discs.... i cant believe that no labels would want to pick them up. scotts songwriting is as solid as ever and they have a reasonably sized and incredibly loyal fan base. when q101 in chicago did their annual tornament of bands thing, as every radio station seem to do in march, local h made it into the top eight, along with nin, tool, apc, etc..pretty good for a band that had one big hit single ten years ago. they must play them at least twice a day too, and not always bound for the floor. oh well, im rambling now....but anyway, yeah, no label yet. ive heard four or five of the new songs, and they are all good. one, called summer of boats is downright amazing, brings to mindsome of the softer songs on as good as dead and pack up the cats.
