It may be weird, but most of us seem to have a bit of a voyeristic streak here. Is it interesting to occasionally check in and watch the "fun" over there, do you plan to jump in with both feet, or could you not care less? Discuss the new joke, er, I mean boards at RS.com.

It's sad. They can't even keep Lyric Tag going over there...

You know, I think I've put like three posts up at the new RS site. I've checked in on it every couple of days, but I've found little compelling reason to frequent it.
And that board is certainly much more prone to flaming, and general nastiness, which I've never had much interest in. Hopefully some of the better posters from there will appear over here as well (whether new or old), which could do some nice things to our little niche here. It's nice to see Paul Cook over here, for example. If a few others show up as well down the line, that would be nice.
One thing that the RS boards reminded me of ... how much I DON'T miss people coming in for one or two posts worth of "SCOTT STAPP RULES!" or whatever. I also didn't realize how much I like things like avatars and signature quotes, etc. It's really too bad that Rolling Stone decided to re-enter the message board game with a product that is so primitive in comparison not just to competing sites but also to its final incarnation back in '04.
Just further proof that the institution of Rolling Stone has moved further into bureacratic senility and decay.

I've lurked a couple of times, but as I've said, I see no reason yet at least to register. IMO, the problem is one of two things (or both of them).
We may be being too hard on them, and not giving them enough time to get a community started. Things grew here very quickly because it all happened so fast - the demise of RS, the desperation of how to get in contact with the people we were in contact with regularly at RS, and then the "Yippee! We're saved!!!". So we got a good running start. Maybe they just need time for the right people/relationships to build.
OR
The way they have things set up, they're trying to control the content WAY too much. I would assume that registered participants can start threads? But the way they have it set up, they're basically saying "These are the things we want you to talk about". Well if you're not interested in those, why would you bother?
Not to mention that it's WAY to difficult to navigate that place.

Ken, I agree with you on the avatars. Even though I don't use one (primarily becuse I've never taken the time to figure out how the heck to do it) I do totally rely on them to know who is saying what. It throws me every time that someone changes theirs, because I have to slow down and read the name to know who is talking. ANd when two people have the same one? Confusion city for me!

I used the same avatar right up until I got the 30th Anniversary Born to Run, and started my (damn near) all-Bruce, all the time, listening cycle. It just seemed like it would be fitting for my avatar to match the rantings in my posts (and I feel another rush of Boss related text just waiting to be unleased). So I had to figure out how to do the "change the avatar" thingy as well.
And some people have had really great avatars ... I still laugh at Shin's bouncing boobies, Dolly's Strummer pic right now is a nice touch (and is a continual reminder that she and I share a love for the man's work), M's Nick Cave obsession is embodied every time she posts, etc. I think they actually do give a bit of insight into the person posting, and just generally make the whole board experience more complete and personal.
The new RS boards just seem awfully cold to me. No profiles, avatars, or signature lines. It's very 1998 ...
Oh yeah, registered users certainly can post their own topics. I think the staff over there just put up a bunch of "suggested topics" to foster discussion. Though I found it really funny that their "hot topics" listing consisted of many boards with exactly zero responses!

I wonder if the desire of the new RS boards is more to get feedback for their own editors than to foster any sort of a regular community.

Yeah, Ken - not even a post count. Have you looked at their trivia "game"? At the end of the round, it doesn't even give you your score, let alone a comparative rating or anything, and people are submitting questions with horrible levels of illiteracy and even wrong answers. RS is not even screening them. It's funny - you'll get ones that say things like, "Does Rolling Stone blow goat balls?" And when you click "Yes" you get the 'ding' and score the points. ;D (Hey, I didn't submit those!)

I wonder if the desire of the new RS boards is more to get feedback for their own editors than to foster any sort of a regular community. I doubt they would deign to consider anything on boards of the unwashed masses for insight in their highbrow journalistic endeavors.

Ken, I love your Born to Run avatar. It looks cool. The new RS boards are a disaster waiting to happen, and it will happen sooner than later. My lone post there will be my last, and I only did that one to take the "JACkory" username "off the market"...(that's also the reason I signed up as Lysergic Aaron! ... ).

Why thank you JAC. I happen to agree. BTW, had a couple of tracks from Devils and Dust appear in this afternoon's random Springsteen mix. All I'm Thinkin' About actually just blew me away, but Matamoros Banks left me cold. I guess I just don't buy Springsteen singing as the voice of the disenfranchised Mexican worker/emigre/whatever. The tracks on Tom Joad that were in the same vein also didn't work for me.

The New RS Message Boards - Their lame. They don't have all the additional posting options as this site. There is no pleasant "atmospehere" there at all.

Like I said before don’t give a shit about them. Jac however has an excellent idea re: locking in user names. I think I’ll do the same.

See, the guy messing with mine actually used my e-mail prefix which I never used as a name there...so that becomes a bit hard to protect even IF I had thought of it. Add a letter and it's different still pretty damned close. Which of course NOW everyone would have added to 'evidence' of these supposed levels of paranoia under which I'm utterly consumed every day...for the Sedaka crew at least.
Shit, I voice the same suspicion which many there and here had already thought of, then in fact I get trolled, and I fucking get jumped for this??!
The ONLY debacle that Clubber can pin on me is responding to 'someone's misinterpretation of my meanings of the words I'd definitely said and then LARGELY to her ugly out-of-nowhere fucking insults.
But re the 'protection' thing ...I guess 'rnrdr' isn't exactly a 'brand' or anything. Any other rock and roll loving physician (who also loves the Little Feat song) could use it. Tho you could say I'm not a 'brand' EXCEPT (I'd have to well, guess) for being inflexibly identified at these RS incarnations as someone who defends a few conservative political ideals (which on this board IS a bad friend-losing thing, no mistake about it) and tries to answer someone when they've apparently confused me with someone who they'll insult and then be able to say 'See? Nothing. I got him!'

How you can blatantly accuse me of being part of some grand scheme that involves boringly imitating you as well as being involved in a fake Kathman appearance, and then act like you're the fucking victim in all of this just shows what a self absorbed, oblivious jerk you really are. My insults did not come out of a vaccum. Who are you trying to kid with this "woe is me, I'm soooo misunderstood" shit anyway?
