Fucking weak. I understand that what thorn said was over the line. He's my friend, and he's apologized. It's not easy to do, especially to Chrisfan. It's no excuse, but I think he is sincere in his apology.
That said, it is not so long ago that I was a new guy at the now defunct CE boards over at rollingstone.com. Numbers, stratman, rocdoc, Chrisfan, and whoever else the fuck ran that place not that differently from the way it is run now, and I remember not being able to say any fucking thing without numbers's dumb ass saying something snide in retort. I don't remember Chrisfan's outrage on my behalf then, and I personally find that expectation on her behalf at this time to be misplaced. Yeah, CE can be a mean and rough place. But outside of thorn's comments, it seems to me that it's rather silly to quit outright.
I hope she comes back, if anything because she was THE most political person we had in these boards.

Gotta check the almanac...is it bear hunting season yet? That might explain why LurkerBear hasn't turned up in a while.

Well, I hope she'll be back when she cools off. Whether you agree with her politics or even like her or not, she is a valuable member, imho. Please indulge me with a little commentary here.
I think we ought to be a little more respectful to people in discussions at CE (most already are). We have a fairly small and fragile gene pool here, not like at the old RS.com. If I were sincerely conservative in my beliefs, I would be rather reluctant to post at CE at all. Think about it; would you? I mean, I don't want to see the spice and spirited debate diminished -- that would be boring and not fun. But we don't have a "balance" by any means, evidenced in that we see little from the right (or middle?) anymore. I value the discourse between, say, Mary and Chrisfan, for example, and I think others do too. And not just between them, but other posters as well. If we continue to have attacks on people, they will leave, and the discourse is diminished. We will be left with consensus and "group think." Now, I don't mind some consensus, but it can get a little boring and not challenging or enlightening.
Everybody here ought to know the "rules of engagement" by now. Some are subtle and unwritten. We've all seen the past interactions of Doc and Shin, for example (though they have been much more civil and interesting of late). They are big boys and I didn't hear either of them crying "uncle"; they seemed to be enjoying what they were about on some level. And while I didn't hear Chrisfan yelling "uncle" either, I guess I'm saying that apples are oranges and oranges are apples. I suppose we have several levels of standards - double standards, triple, quadruple. I don't know. This leads me to point 2:
While I wouldn't bat an eye at Shin telling Doc to suck his dick, or vice versa, there's just something that strikes a nerve when a man publicly tells a woman she needs her clit rubbed down, etc. Now, Thorn has already apologized for that, but the point is that there seems to be a more visceral reaction to that, which I believe I can explain, at least for me. It may be completely sexist, non-PC, and a double standard to say this, but I don't think I'm alone here. It's just beyond the pale, at least at CE. That's just the way it is. It may be "quaint" or "old-fashioned," but that convention is still in place, and I hope it remains in place here. If Doc or Melon were to say something like that to Mary, for example (which would be completely out of character, btw), I and others would likely say, "Hey, man, what's up with that?!" Yet, when Thorn did, I guess we dismissed or ignored it as just Thorn being Thorn. No offense, Thorn.
At any rate, the CE board would benefit from some discretion. Man up.

I agree...would only add that Chrisfan was just as insulting in her implication that a hug from thorn was vomit-inducing. That was totally uncalled for and took it to a personal level that was unwarranted in light of the conversation taking place. And I think it was Kenny who pointed out one of Chrisfan's own retorts, "Grow a spine". This is definately a case where she has failed to heed her own advice. She is a valuable member of this community and it's too bad she reacted in this manner when it would have been so easy to have just a.) restrained herself from making the insulting comment in the first place and b.) ignored the non-topic related onslaught of reactions to that insult. If she would rather leave than admit she was the one who threw the first volley (and that, oh my, she may have actually been OUT OF LINE to have done so...) well hey...she's probably enjoying herself at those other message boards she's spoken of that she participates in where everyone pretty much agrees with each other about everything. Whatever makes her happy, eh?
