And the Edge definitely sounds all over this... and rightly so.... his playing does sound great actually! My early call is this is very ATYCLB with faster rhythms and a bit more guitar crunch and verve... so no they aren't repeating themselves entirely, but I think it does sound quite like a "safe" U2 album.
That doesn't necessarily make it bad either, in fact, i am being pleasantly suprised at this stage! City of Blinding Lights is quite a mesmerising little track! It's playing now!

"City Of Blinding Lights" is definitely a standout track on the album. I also agree with you Scottsy, that this CD is more or less a more rocking/guitar-based version of atyclb. Although I have to say I prefer this record song-for-song. Atyclb had more than it's share of throwaways.
The only one I usually skip on the new album is "One Step Closer" which is a bit too much of a 'downer' for me.

I took a good long, solid listen to it yesterday on my walkman whilst doing my errands.... a fine album, and yeah, I even underrated it a bit.... alot of very strong material on this record. Can't say every single song is a winner, still not totally sold on Vertigo, just seemed a little too give or take for me, and the one track that sounds really Oasis - like (the name escapes me at the moment) I could live without.... the rest are really quite strong and lyrically quite interesting. The Edge is in good form all over the album, and thats a really good thing because I have always been a big fan of his playing.
I am prepared to say this is quite a good U2 album... of course not better than Achtung Baby, but its a good offering from the band... I very much like it!

Straw, you should find this amusing. I know I did. ;D www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=11worstI haven't heard the new album, but my Mom owns the previous one, the one that came out in 2000. When she played it around the house, I remembered thinking it was really boring. But I think I hate Bono more than anything else.

yowch. pretty harsh.
may i ask what you have against bono, though? other than that he's extremely pretentious. he's donated a lot of money and done a lot of good things along those lines...

I'm afraid i am taking a major swing back to U2 now... I've been enjoying the new album solidly since the middle of last week... it's certainly clicked with me... and maybe Bono aint so bad... sometimes he really doesn't need to have his finger in every pie... yet, ya know he does do alot of good as well, so it's difficult to knock the guy.
Consider this a change of heart... I really like HTDAAB now!
Feel free to accuse me of hypocrisy... but damnit, I am allowed to change my mind! :-)

i still haven't given how to dismantle TOO much listening. i'm busy going through my record collection in alphabetical order, from start to finish. so i'll be listening to my u2 albums near finishing...

Around the Sun seemed to fit my mood lately.... especially on the way home from seeing Mellie... some of the more melancholic moments were really appealing in my sad separation anxiety state of mind!
That sounds like an ambitious project proud! Listening to all your Cds from A - Z... that would take me nearly a life time given how far my collection has expanded in years of late... still, it'd be kinda fun!

Even I'm kinda liking 'Around The Sun'! Who woulda thought? Actually, a mate of mine burnt me a copy, so I thought I'd give it a few more spins... Favourites so far "Leaving New York", "High Speed Train" and my super-favs "I Wanted to Be Wrong" and "Boy In The Well." "Wanderlust", although probably the most commercial track on the disc, is also by far my least favourite. Absolutely hate it!!

Why are REM and U2 both being condemned for somehow remaining relevant for 20+ years? All I know is there's a reason for it, it didn't happen by chance. Very few bands manage to remain relevant and make interesting records for over 2 decades. As for that link to that guy's website, I find it odd someone who supposedly hates U2 so much knows the new album inside-out. Even I don't know it that well and I actually love it. IMO, it's much better than the previous one. The Christopher Reeve bashing on that site was also tacky, so I can only assume he's a devoted Eminem fan... which would explain plenty. I will agree with him on Helen Hunt though. Can't stand the bitch myself!!

In my oh so humble opinion, neither band has been "relevent" or made an "interesting" recording for about 15 years....they are two of the most over rated and hyped up bands I can think of...
...the only reason they sell records is through faded glory...bit like the Rolling Stones really....they are like your security blanket, and people buy their CDs hoping that they will purchase another War or Boy....sorry that just is not going to happen....all you are going to get is hype...cos thats all they have left...
...still if you think they are relavent and interesting, by all means buy their Cds...after all they are still a little more listenable than some of that other crap that passes for rock these days....
...and that is all this grumpy sod is going to bother writing about those two bands...bah bah boring....

people didn't buy atyclb in order to cling onto some sort of past glory, i can tell you that. i know a lot of people hate it, but i love that album for its messages and its passion, and it brought me from hating u2 blindly for no real reason to loving them and what they've done for people stuck in the murkiness of nu-metal and "pop-punk".
but i digress (or however that's spelled).

well, being a U2 fan since Boy and REM since Murmer, I have all the albums of both (except the most recent REM, which I may just have to avail myself of)..that being said, I've now listened to How to Dismantle...a few times more, and though it doesn't provide the sonic pleasure that ATYCLB did, it's still a damn fine work....I find the music interesting, Bono's vocals still sound sharp, and as a whole it coheres well.....I was rather happy with the non-ironic "return to form" of ATYCLB, and to some extent, "how to dismantle.." continues with that........it's funny, though, there are periods of U2 that just haven' interested me...while so many were going ga-ga during the Joshua Tree/Rattle and Hum era, I started to tire of their mass exposure...and then though I did enjoy Achtung Baby and parts of Zooropa, Pop did nothing for me.....
