So Edmonton's Stanley Cup hopes appear pretty much done but I have to say, Albertans are a classy bunch when it comes to singing the national anthems. The way they sing both of them – and no booing for the opposition anthem like you hear in some buildings. And the way they throw themselves into "O Canada". Well done, guys!! Agreed again. Edmonton fans are pure class. A completely legit hockey town through and through.

So did I miss the best game ever last night or what? The highlights this morning looked pretty exciting. Damn.

Man. I had these guys written off. The Oilers played fantastic hockey last night. I would say they have momentum going into game 7. So much heart. Pisani is playing ridiculous hockey right now.

Great game indeed! A seventh game is always going to be a toss-up but Edmonton definitely has everything going its way. They’re playing with a lot of heart and a lot of poise. On the other hand, I’m not sure Carolina has anything left in the tank at this point – I couldn’t believe we were something like 12 or 13 minutes into the 2nd period last night before they managed to register more than 3 shots on goal.
And playing Erik Cole, WTF was that?? It was only a few games back that they were interviewing him between periods still wearing the neck brace. No doubt he really wants to play but someone should have had the good sense to say absolutely no way. One solid hit and he could be spending the rest of his life in a wheelchair...

Thing is Cole plays hard too. It's not like you can have a guy who plays high wire hockey just dial it back, and if he did what would be the point. I think it was ill advised for him to play as well. When Moreau leveled him in the first 5 minutes, my stomach flipped over.

OK, so J. wasn't too impressed with my logic on this one last night, but let me try something on you guys: The two Alberta teams have had their shot and haven't been able to do it... Ottawa is developing a reputation second only* to the Washington Caps for choking in the playoffs.... Vancouver has never been able to do it and you know the Leafs never will.... – so – I guess it's up to the Habs. Next year or the year after that, the hockey gods will smile on Les Canadiens once more and the greatest franchise in the history of professional sport will bring the Stanley Cup back home where it belongs! Destiny. I can see it. *Debatable, at this point, whether I'm being generous in saying "second only" here…

I think there a player or two away from making a run, but why not. Had a bad feeling going into last night the Oilers wouldn't be able to find some more magic.

I think there a player or two away from making a run, but why not. A minor detail. We're talking divine providence here. As for the Oilers post-mortem, pre-game I figured it could go either way. I was expecting Carolina to show up to play after the drubbing Saturday night, but they looked so uptight that I figured it was possible that the fear would just paralyze them. Edmonton, on the other hand, looked so incredibly loose that I thought that they might go out there and make it look easy again… Or alternately, that they could on some subconscious level be feeling like they sort of made their point in game 6, which obviously would be a bad thing. Early goal and the way the Hurricanes bottled up the middle killed 'em, I think. Edmonton really needed to be driving to the net more and firing it a lot more. Full marks to the Hurricanes, though. I don't think they had a lot left in the tank but they managed to hold it together for one last game.

Not looking good for the Sens but I can’t say I’m totally convinced by Anaheim just yet either. Giguere can be a wild card and to me the Ducks seem a bit erratic as a team. (Richly deserved to lose the one time I saw them before this series – Game 5 with Detroit – but woke up for about the last two minutes of regulation and overtime to steal it.)
The overly long layoff between the conference final and this series obviously hurt Ottawa (thank you Gary Bettman) but despite their franchise history, I think this team has it within them to stage a comeback. Whether they will or not is another story but six or seven game series have sort of become the norm in recent Stanley Cup history (two 6-game and four 7-game series in the last 10 years). I said Ottawa in six before this series started. That would be a bit optimistic now but I could still see them taking it in seven.

Yeah well, I've always maintained it was going to be up to the Habs to bring The Cup back to Canada. Once Gainey finds a way to square up with the Hockey Gods over the curse on "Le Centre Bell", I'm sure all will be right with the world once again.
