Thought I'd put this thread here next to the TV thread, hopefully noone in absentia will mind.
Anyhoo, I have a terribly low threshold for television commercials, and I thought this would be a good place for us all to vent about the idiocy and annoyance factor of what we deem "The Most Annoying Commercials".
For instance, right now I think the most annoying thing on the screen is that goober giving the server at Arbys a hard time about their 5 for 5.95 deal. You know, the one who finally orders 5 orders of curly fries after going through 3 or 4 variations on an order trying to understand how the deal works. He finally orders his curly fries and does this silly little whistle thing that coincides with an even sillier flick of the wrist. God, I have come to hate that man. If I were the girl behind the register I would have told the fry cook to make sure and get some extra spit on those curly-Qs...
Last week around this time the main contenders were: 1. The moron playing guitar and whistling "Walk, Don't Run" in that central heating and air spot (can't remember the brand, even) and 2. The "Dr. Z" Toyota (?) commercial where the redneck director tells him he "Forgot to mention the Hemi" after Z has been ordered to talk up the vehicles as they are "MORE than Hemis". I think that one got on my nerves because they showed it no less than 2 times every day on the local news. I watch a lot of news so I got to see this one a lot of times.
Am I the only one with such disdain for commercial advertisements? Share.

I actually like the Dr. Z commercials. Taking the mustachioed CEO of Daimler-Chrysler and making him into the company's pitchman was nothing short of brilliant, IMHO. Those are my favorite car commercials right now. Of course the fact that I'm rather smitten by the Dodge Charger SRT-8 doesn't hurt. That's an American car to be proud of, IMHO. AND it's got a Hemi! Now the Gap (?) ad that has Audrey Hepburn (?) dancing to Back in Black? THAT annoys the hell out of me! So do any and all ring-tone ads. All of 'em.

I've got no clue at all either. They sound pretty bad though. Glad I'm a wiz at zapping!

The only Dr. Z ad I’ve seen is the one with the school kids and the Jeep that gets 26 mpg (big whoo hoo). Don’t out and out hate or anything it but I do find it to be a slight bit of a turn-off. Like most, I guess, I can be pretty quick on the mute button but I don’t have a blanket disdain for television commercials. Some can be pretty damned creative, IMO. One I like, which had disappeared for a while but recently started airing again around here, is the Holiday Inn ad with the guy saying goodnight to all the office stereotypes before he tucks in for the evening ("Goodnight IT guy who’s never around when I need him", etc..). Quite brilliantly done, I thought. I also like the first one, with the hockey player, on this "reel". Gets a bit overplayed at certain times of the year but very nicely written and acted. (BTW, you will need Quicktime player for this one and be careful with your volume setting – I find with mine at least that Quicktime tends to come blaring out at pain threshold at first if I’m not careful.) www.downtownpartners.com/reels/sr_sportchek/reel_1.html

We don't get the "5 for 5.95" thing here. Why? Because our Arby's does 5 for $5. Pretty sweet.
Right now my pet peeve is the Levi's commercial with "Walk the Line."

What's the difference between the 5 for 5 and the 5 for 5.95? I'm thinking the 5 for 5 is the standard 5 roast beef sandwiches for 5 bucks. Which is a great deal, but I like the "choice" aspect of 5 for 5.95 a little better. Sure, I can easily put away 5 sandwiches, but it's better to get 4 with the drink or 3 with fries and drink, just for the thirst and variety factor. It's just one more buck.
I guess I should say that I don't have a "blanket disdain" for TV commercials (though it comes pretty damn close, I'll admit). .There are a few that are amusing. I like the Holiday Inn Express ad where the surf board kids are all excited about riding in a helicopter until they get up into the sky and find out the guy driving the copter is not the pilot, just some guy who "always wanted to fly one"...words don't do it justice. Funny stuff.
And yeah, Johnny Cash is rolling over in his grave at that horrible "Walk the Line" series of commercials. Those two singing it really are beyond awful.

I like that Holiday Inn ad too, Drum. Pretty clever.
The commercials I hate most right now are the ones for "Party Poker", that online poker site. The one with the blonde groupie in bed with the old guy, in particular, makes me want to gouge my eyes out.

I hate the recent Nike commercial with NFL players in high school. Fucking stupid all the way and "Spirit in the Sky", if not already, has joined the club of overused rock songs, sharing tight cabin space with "Bad to the Bone."

I think that's the one NFL commercial without Peyton Manning in it.

Fucking stupid all the way and "Spirit in the Sky", if not already, has joined the club of overused rock songs, sharing tight cabin space with "Bad to the Bone." And let's not forget "Lust for Life". I hate that both "Melt with You" and "Wouldn't It Be Nice" are now being used to hawk food products. I hate it even more that they've changed the words to WIBN to talk about a fucking chocolate bar.

Generally have the same type of reflexive *meh* to favoured songs ending up as part of ad campaigns, but there are always exceptions. This, for example.

Generally I don't really care about songs in commercials either.
My most hated commercial right now I think is the cell phone commercial where the family is talking like auctioneers. It's fucking stupid and I hate it.

I hate that commercial too. They aren't even talking very fast, they're just talking in a really weird rhythm. That's not going to save them any minutes.

Now that I think about I hate most cell phone commercials...ok I kinda like the "Good crazy, bad crazy?" one but most of the other one I hate.
