The Eagles suck.
Mellencamp's music is better than Springsteen's IMO. As a lyricist, granted, he's probably worse than Springsteen, but melodies always come first with me, and as far as I'm concerned, Mellencamp's songs are just more enjoyable.

KOOL-WHAT? You are saying that Mellencamp is better than Springsteen? Sure "Lonely Old Night" kicks "Im On Fire's" ass--but c'mon... "Rooty Toot Toot?" you dont get a track like that on any Springsteen record.

And yes, The Eagles suck. Its no so much the overplayed music that sucks--if they were in the same league as Pure Prarie League or Flying Burrito Brothers (post GRAM) it would be OK. The Eagles are just a cash cow that just keeps getting dry humped on its side with no towel to wipe off with. Take a song like Hotel California. It would be alright if you listen to it with virgin ears--as if you have never heard it before--its pretty fucking cool, isnt it? Pretty inventive for its time. But no one can cos they are overexposed to this shit..Hell Freezes Over--how clever....Gram Parsons, the Buffalo Springfield and later Flying Burrito Brothers records far outdo anything they have done in an entire career. You can save Walden Woods, there Don. Open up your fucking wallet.

"I'm on Fire" is actually one of my favourite Springsteen songs. I find it odd that you would use that specific song as an example here. It's definitely a better song than anything he's done in the past couple of decades. I love me some "Lonely Ol' Night" myself, but I don't think "I'm On Fire" kicks its ass. That's a bit of a stretch.

"Lonely Ol' Night" kicks "Born In the USA" and "Dancing In The Dark's" asses combined. There, fixed it for ya!

Have you guys only listened to Born In The USA? There's your problem. If you can listen to Darkness On The Edge Of Town and still say ANYTHING Mellencamp's done even approaches being that good then I don't know what else say...

I love early Springsteen...Asbury Park NJ, Born To Run, Darkness On The Edge Of Town, but later Springsteen just makes me cringe....Born In The USA...Urrrghhh..hate it...
As for The Eagles...I got Hotel California and Night At The Opera the same day (back in about 1974 I think)...and I loved HC...don't think much of it now...but maybe thats because The Eagles whiney music since just has pissed me off..(The only Queen song I like now is Killer Queen BTW)
Bit like Jackson Browne.....fuck I loved Running On Empty, though Hold Out was OK, and then it was the slippery slope to crapdom, and I rarely listen to any of his stuff now even though I have quite a bit (?) because he whines on just like The Eagles, just like Springsteen too come to think of it, and Dylan too.
Sorry but I think all those "has beens" were great once, but now just milk everyone, and people accept shit from them, because they think these "heroes" can't produse crap...IMO they can and have been for years

I agree about early Jackson Browne being underrated...some really good stuff there.

Born In The USA is not exactly "LATER Springsteen". I believe it came out in 1984, which would be right about 10 years into his career. He's continued to recored and perform for the next 22 years...I hope you didn't give up on him so EARLY into his career.
Everyone has the right to their own taste. I've always felt that Mellencamp himself worked out of the Springsteen Fake Book and not with much success. But hey, I know how it is to dislike an artist I'm "supposed" to like (can't tolerate much of the Beach Boys).

I dunno about that. Have you heard his most recent, The Naked Ride Home? It's really quite good.

JAC...On the Springsteen note...trust me 1984 was getting on in his career... I had almost every Springsteen up to Born in The USA (Asbury Park, Wild and Innocent, Born to Run, Darkness, The River, Nebraska) and then along came that monstrosity of an album....yes, it put me off Springsteen for life...I still revisit the albums up to Darkness, but yeah I don't much care for Bruce...any more
As for Jackson Browne...I don't really listen to Running on Empty much any more..just his voice and me have parted company...He could put out the "best Jackson Browne album ever" and I'd not like it...we are in different places are Jackson and me.
I think the artists I listed in my previous posts could also include Led Zep...we somehow fell out too, except I began to detest LZ so much I GAVE AWAY my collection...yeah some people got lucky there (I'm glad they are with people who appreciate it...and my boys can't get them and play them in the house....instead they have grabbed my Buzzcocks, Ramones, Sex Pistols and Deadboys of late)....
