i really think that working with jarboe rekindled the creative fire of neurosis, who really kinda lost the plot for a minute on a sun that never sets, when they decided inexplicably that it was time to break out the acoustic guitars and fuckin james taylor records. (ok that is an exaggeration but still, c'mon, it's neurosis, give us some apocalyptic, cinematic death metal already!!!) but here they manage all the different styles, from hautning ballads to crashing metal, all anchored by jarboe's enormous presence. this woman can sing anything. she can chant over and overa gain 'i tell you if god wants to take me, he will' in a way that sounds utterly terrifying, and makes you begin to wonder if perhaps god doesn't want to take you too. thenshe can sing in her quiet ethereal icy chanteuse voice that puts nico to fuckin shame 'hold me mother to your breast, hold me mother through my death' and then fuckin start shredding her vocal cords and scremaing bloody murder like she just ate max cavalera for breakfast. she is a wonder to behold. i would proclaimm this the best album of 2004, except i've only heard one other 2004 album, because i'm a lazy poor sod who always buys albums from 1982. Cheers, M

Some Australiana for me today:
Art Of Fighting- Second Storey Architecture In Helsinki- Fingers Crossed The Panics- A House On A Street In A Town I'm From Augie March- Sunset Studies Cog- Open Up The Finn Brothers- Everyone Is Here (yes, I know.....) Eskimo Joe- A Song Is A City Epicure- The Goodbye Girl
That Neurosis sounds interesting indeed. I found Jarboe always a bit limited as vocalist as she mostly employed a soft, agreeable, slightly hoarse vocal to the eclectic Swans-mix. Her solo-efforts just gave me the same feelings as the ones from Lisa Gerrard and Brendan Perry of Dead Can Dance; together with Michael Gira the combination clicks whereas solo you miss the synergy- the deep, sonore baritone from Gira alternates so well with Jarboe, in the same sense as the rich vocals of Brendan Perry alternate with the exquisite operatic warblings of Gerrard.
One thing I notice too is that lyrically Jarboe hasn't moved very far on from her pseudo-intellectual horrormelancholia. It works for her music, that's true, but I wish she sidestepped the imagery sometimes for more direct lyrics. Perhaps that's why she opened up a can of screamalistics?

Amongst others: Finn Brothers – Everyone is Here What can I say? Fuckers made me shed tears of joy the first time out. Steve Earle – The Revolution Starts Now This is a protest record but the reason why it works so well is that it's a friggin' big party!

Yeah maarts, the same ex who burnt a ton of Swans for me also burnt me some solo Jarboe, but I've barely touched it - I really should give it another chance now that I've fallen in love with this Neurosis & Jarboe record. The lyrics here are still pretty much just about the dark side of sex and religion - definitely potentially a bit cliche, although I do think she has a fairly poetic way with words that often saves her from self-caricature. I really like what Neurosis is doing as well on this album, they're experimenting with various keyboard sounds and such in a great way - it's not just like random blips and bleeps to be fashioanbly electronic, but they've created these entire, doom-laden soundscapes which are highly effective underneath Jarboe's vocals. Did you know that Jarboe had this totally crazy biography? From allmusic.com: Coming to rock and experimental music from a complex, fascinating background (both her parents were FBI agents; her upbringing in the South included such elements of extreme American religious faith as snake-handling ceremonies; and before her direct involvement in music she participated in "unorthodox sex work," to use her own words, in various U.S. cities), Jarboe, who has always preferred to be known by her sole name, has long been known as one of the fiercest spirits in modern music. Hmmm...I'm gonna have to read up a bit more on this so-called "unorthodox" sex work.... Cheers, M

Yesterday I got something like 100 Black Sabbath songs from a friend over the net, along with Sabbath covers by various metal bands (good and bad). Gotta love high-speed internet access! ;D
