Inspired by RocDoc & my loveable husband, already an old man at the tender age of 30 who spent his weekend sitting on our balcony, drinking whiskey & listening to this brilliant piece of Old Man entertainment: Now, I love me some Old Man Music. I grew up with it, coz my old man loves it. But it needs policing. You can have too much of a good thing. We now have access to a daily measure of Old Man Music, developed in the interests of keeping our music collections fresh & vital. Please don't hesitate to report a major Old Man Music violation (eg. three days of nonstop Cream; more than six successive posts on 'Other than Death Metal...' containing primarily Old Man tunes etc). Turning a blind eye to the problem is half the problem. Old Man Music Alert SystemSevereHighElevatedGuardedLow

Two mentions of Thin Lizzy; one mention of old school Santana & multiple Neil Young albums within same post = Blue alert.

Layla, it's probably not a very good idea to start a thread on this board. I bet a lot of people don't expect this board to have any content other than "other than death metal...", and don't bother checking for other threads. Start Your Music Threads or Influential Music would probably be better boards.

But.... what if we happen to be listening to Old Man Music and want to talk about it? Maybe she should make two or three copies of the board and post it in different areas so as to have full exposure.
What exactly are the criterion for Old Man Music? I'm not sure if I actually have any. I have "I'm A Huge Dork For My Age" music, but I own no Allman Bros and I don't even know what Cream sounds like.

Does this guy qualify as old man music, Layla? I love this dude, and will go see him play live several times a year.

NP: A couple of "didn't you used to be" singers and their pals (incl. Richard Lloyd and Van Dyke Parks) play a bunch of their favorites from the sixties and a dash of early seventies material. And I'm in love with Susannah Hoffs all over again ... we can dance to the beat of a different drum, darling, but as long as you're singing, the kids are still alright. I love this record, even though it probably defines "old man rock" for somebody here. Where's the sequel? Has Bowiglou heard this? What about JAC? Kool? This is just gorgeous, all the way through ... you guys should love it too.

I don't know if there is a strict criteria defining Old Man Music. Its kinda like punk...its just a vibe more than anything. Basically, if my old man or RocDoc (& Phil) listen to it, then you're pretty sure its Old Man Music (god love em all).
If your band has at least three of the following from column b), you qualify as OMM (note: column a) is a pre-requisite):
a)birth certificates dated from the 1940s/50s
b) excess facial hair Eric Clapton super-tight jeans heavy down-home imagery the word 'bayou' in any of your song titles a song about how Robert Johnson made a deal with the Devil (yawn already) the word 'psychedelia' can be applied in any way to your sound extended jams an average of 6 members in your band, one of whom sometimes appears to do nothing over-representation of stoners & burnouts in your core audience

Love the definition of Old Man Music, La. By this standard, the closest I come to OMM would be Clapton's Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs -- not too bad.

There is not nearly enough skeezy hair on that man to even come close to qualify. Besides, he doesn't look like he reeks of Southern Comfort. A raging drinking problem is necessary.

Yes, you do. OMM has permeated every corner of Western society. You know Cream & you secretly love them.
